Who owns MGM these days ? Is part of the problem with old studios like MGM are they run more by $$$ people rather than real movie people who really care about films ?

MGM is independently owned (they were briefly owned by Sony 15 years ago, but no longer), but rely on other distributors to release their product. Their films are released to theaters by United Artists, which (in its current incarnation) is a joint operation between MGM and Annapurna. For years, they would exclusively release their films through other studios like Warner, Fox, Lionsgate, etc. It also looks like Warner is their new home video partner.

I pray that neither Apple nor Netflix buy MGM as rumored. That would just destroy boutique labels because they rely so heavily on the MGM catalog.

Either Warner or Apple will end up with MGM, one has a working relationship and the other needs content for their streaming service. I think Warner gets MGM and Apple gets Sony.

I'm telling you; this all comes full circle now...

Only a matter of time when we see collections featuring both the pre and post 86 libraries. ^_^

Warner had MGM home distribution rights before and there were complete sets. Sony took over in 2006 for a brief period then Fox came in.

Together again, huh?
WB also handled the release of Orion's Gretel & Hansel in May, Orion is an MGM company.

Although keep in mind that Warner and Universal distribute their titles on home video together now (or will very soon): https://deadline.com/2020/01/univers...re-1202831261/

Not much of a joint venture for now: Annapurna haven’t produced anything since being bailed out of their bankruptcy.

So Warner has no say about extras, restoration plans or third party licensing for the MGM library, right? They're just distributing? I can't remember the last time I saw a non-Warner Archive Blu-ray release from the studio. It's great that they're still supporting physical media but the Archive releases are mostly barebones affairs in generic packaging. I'd rather MGM continue licensing to boutique labels who do care about extras and presentation.

That’s right. I wonder what will happen to the MGM-connected Annapurna films like Booksmart or Vice.

If WB is to do a Poltergeist blu-ray collection, I wonder if they will use the 2K scans Shout used for 2 and 3. At this point it would serve them better to release Poltergeist on UHD instead of another reissue.

MGM through Warner is good news. Warner and Universal have been the best about UHD thus far outside of Lionsgate.

Also, Kino Lorber Studio Classics just made a deal for 30 of MGM's titles. They announced the first one today: Robert Aldrich's Attack! (1956) starring Jack Palance.

I have been snapping up Fox and MGM titles at a not-fast-enough rate. This may be a sign that I can ease up on the MGM and focus mostly on the Fox end.

I wish MGM had licensed out Showgirls to whichever studio was willing to give it a proper 25th anniversary release. (4K UHD, Paul Verhoeven, Elizabeth Berkley, Gina Gershon commentary, new interviews)

Most of the cast wants nothing to do with the film, so the chance of getting new interviews or commentaries is about zero. Have you checked out You Don't Nomi?

I didn't know MGM had 30 more movies worth putting out on Blu-ray

Joke. I never get overly excited whenever Kino announces deals with studios, mostly because the bulk of their pickups are movies that don't appeal to me. My blind buying has pretty much ground to a halt these days unless it's horror or crime films from 1975-1990 - a time period Kino seems to be mostly disinterested in. But who knows - maybe they'll sneak in a handful of films I might like.

Warner recently acquired the theatrical rights for "Misery" for resperatory screenings so this seems to make sense.
