Roger that. Cheers. Hopefully gets a firmware in time... Looks like that Shield is gonna be a necessity not just a luxury, then

No firmware, it's not a 'problem' as such but an intentional block of that capability.

The New York Audio Show published a press release on our 1st USA showing of Panasonic's UB9000. We have it connected to Sony's A9F OLED TV in our Dynaudio suite.

Speaking of OLED TV's, Robert - I'll risk asking an off-topic question here by asking you, do you predict there will be top-end TVs produced (OLED or full-array LED backlight) in the "40 inches or less" size? I've been frustrated lately at my limited selection of TVs for my tiny apartment. I've asked this in more appropriate threads, but you seem like an expert in these kinds of things.

It would be very unusual for them to produce screens in a relatively small size at high volumes. It might be worth looking at PC monitors, but they're expensive and OLED monitors have yet to be produced (they've been planned). But I think you can get FALD monitors.

I've looked at monitors; they seem to be smaller than I want in a TV - I'm looking at 35" - 40" (or maybe 42"). There's a gap between max monitor size and min TV size in that high-end segment, from what I've seen. I'll be keeping my eyes open, anyway. I want to the best view on what my soon-to-have UB9000 produces! :-)

There is a 31:9 49'' monitor, but I think 34'' is probably the largest size with the most options. You're just not going to find a relatively small OLED. Unless you physically cannot put a larger TV in your space, I'd recommend going with the biggest TV you can fit in!

Sadly have to agree that it's unlikely we'll see smaller than 55" OLED TVs for 2019.

If it would be at all possible for you to go up to 49" you'd have a little more to choose from, like Sony make their X900F in that size.

My personal favorite for the 49" class. Of course any one of the four 2018 55" OLED TVs are my overall favorite in 55", 65".

It can be more difficult to select among the many excellent 75-77" choices in the LCD/LED display category and the OLEDs. 77" OLED's new prices should begin to attract TV buyers in this size class.

For 82-88" I go back to liking Sony's 85" X900F and it has also just got another $300 selling price decrease. Samsung is also an excellent choice with the 82" Q6 and Q8 series.

I live in a small San Francisco apartment. The TV is in a corner of the room. One side of the room has my desk, the other has a built-in cabinet, so if I wanted to have a large TV in it, I'd have to permanently block off the main door to the room (there's another door that goes to the kitchen), which I don't want to do. My couch is up against the window, facing the TV in the corner.

Here's the current 40" TV there; my last on was 37", and both are Quite Big Enough, Thank You(tm). So going to 49" or bigger would look ridiculous.

They make LCD LED TVs in the 40 to 42" size. Mate that with a Panasonic 820.

It may look ridiculous but judging by that pic a 49" inch set would fit in there except with it perhaps touching the blinds a bit.

They don't make OLED TV's any smaller than 55" as other users pointed out.

I agree with other poster the Sony X900F 49" set would pair well with the UB9000.

Maybe the 43" Sony X800E 4K set would be better for you.

Yes, and I have a 40-inch TV (I wrote down 42-inch, that was a mistake; it's a 40" Samsung NU7100). It's just a relatively low-end tv. My point was, I want a high-end one (better panel with full LED array or OLED), which doesn't exist at that size.

It would be WAAAY out of scale with the size of the room, and would dominate. That size would likely hit the blinds, and also possibly block access to the cabinet door. That's why I need a smaller TV (even the 40" there is too big for me; the one there is a Samsung NU7100).

And like I said, I'm looking for a top-end panel; either OLED or full-matrix LED backlight. Any other suggestions are pointless, but I appreciate you trying to be helpful. :-)

Anyway, sorry for changing the subject of this discussion; back to your regularly scheduled programming! :-)

- Tim

Having looked around the net the display that comes the closest to meeting your criteria is the XBR43X800E. Only thing I’m unsure of is how much of an upgrade it would be if any.

Yeah, it wouldn't be much of one, though I DO prefer IPS panels (the VA panel that my current TV has is good, but darker than my old IPS-based TV); the contrast issues on IPS panels for dark scenes don't bother me so much.

Anyway, I'll just have to keep my eye on the market, I guess, until OLED gets so normal that they'll start making smaller panels.

Thanks for the picture, it's very self-explanatory to the problem you're facing.

Obviously it depends on how much you love your TV (and what you can do in your apartment), but if you want the latest tech you're going to have to go big. It might be worth considering turning that albeit nice cabinet into a media centre (it looks quite wide), remove the doors and recess a large TV on a mount inside.

Then you could remove the current TV stand and free up some floor space.

Today's trend is larger TVs than in the past. Anything smaller than 50" is a computer monitor. Anything larger than 85" is your local IMAX theater in your home theater room.

My friend is a pro artist with a Bose radio and like you a 40" Samsung LED display in his living room. He doesn't care if it's the best or not, he goes with what he thinks it's fair to pay, looking for sales like anyone else. TV manufacturers put the emphasis where they can maximise their profits the most...androids, tablets, iPhones, iPads, 50 to 65" TVs, and larger ones. For 30" it's a computer monitor, 40" a monitor for gamers, a news TV.
He uses Chromecast for channels surfing and an Asus laptop for the odd DVD.
He streams from Netflix and YouTube.

A Panasonic 4K BR player like the 820; he'll never be able to figure out @ 80.
