OLED is the standard for the optimal Ultra HD Blu-ray viewing experience.

Indeedly. And with what they told Vincent, it all makes sense to me. In the consumer space, they think LCD is only worth bothering with when it can be sold cheaper than OLED in the same size class. This explains why their highest-end LCDs are only availalbe in larger screen sizes, where OLED quickly gets very expensive with each step up in size. And it explains why only their lowest-end premium LCD is available in 55" and 50", the two screen sizes where OLED is at its most comparatively affordable.

This tells me we shouldn't have high hopes of seeing the return of more dimming zones, Backlight Master Drive, etc. since that would drive up the cost, and thus defeat the purpose of having LCD around, since Sony intend for those sets to be their "relatively more affordable within the premium segment" offerings.

For me as someone who likes to game on my TVs, I'm not completely sold on OLED for obvious reasons, but manufacturers are pushing me in that direction. On the LCD side of things, there aren't many options far as higher-end sets, especially as 55" is the most comfortable size for me.

Samsung have adopted mini-LED, which is nice to see, but they have... issues, they need to sort out on the software side of things. Will be interesting to see how all these sets perform when reviewers and owners get their hands on them anyhow.

That's funny. I'm thinking about replacing the tv in the family room with a Vizio M55Q8-H1. It's mainly the wife and kids who watch in there, so nothing fancy.

@Robert Zohn can you find out from Sony if they have indeed cancelled the VRR updates for the X900h and why if so, as of the 1/7 update to the TV it no longer shows it will be VRR compatible for PS5, many of us bought the TV under the assumption it would get VRR due to Sony statements and whitepaper. Would seem kinda crappy if they screw us like this.

LG Display unveils next-generation OLED TV display with improved picture quality
http://lgdisplay.com/eng/prcenter/newsView

Quote:
LG Display’s new 77-inch OLED display shows significant progress in picture quality through newly developed and highly efficient materials as well as the addition of a layer to the display, thereby improving its efficiency by around 20%. Higher efficiency means that the display improves its brightness to realize more vivid images.

Quote:
LG Display is planning to apply its advanced next-generation OLED technology to high-end TV models that will be launched this year and gradually expand its adoption. In addition, the company is set to strengthen its lineup by producing 83-inch and 42-inch OLED TV displays starting this year, adding to the existing 88-inch, 77-inch, 65-inch, 55-inch, and 48-inch OLED TV displays. It also plans to significantly expand its mid-range TV display lineup down to the 20-30-inch range, enhancing not only TV, but also gaming, mobility, and personal display options.

It's not uncommon to have different versions of a single TV model, with different components from different suppliers, so they would need to be sure that VRR works with all of the hardware they put out there. I'm sure VRR will come later, when the console is more widely available and there is more time for testing, with newer PS5 firmware.

Lex I understand that however in many cases most of us bought said TV because it was to be fully PS5 compatible based off Sony advertising. For them to renege like this seems like a ploy to say gimmie your money and is not right.

Sony embraces the AV1 video format with its 2021 TVs

Quote:
In 2021, Sony will embrace AV1. The Japanese company has confirmed to FlatpanelsHD that all of its 4K and 8K 2021 models – both OLED and LCD – with Google TV will support AV1 hardware decoding.
Quote:
Sony notes that AV1 is supported for video in up to 4K resolution but not 8K resolution (in Z9J), and only for streaming apps (no USB support). AV1 support also means that Sony's 2021 TVs will have an upgraded SoC compared to the 2020 models.

LG takes OLED mainstream with new 48-77" A1 OLED TVs

Quote:
In 2021, LG will launch a range of more affordable A1 OLED TVs in 48 to 77 inches. A1 has a 50/60Hz 4K OLED panel and HDMI 2.0. LG will also launch new B1 OLED TVs.
Quote:
There are still no pictures of A1 and B1 available for the public to see, and there are still no official pricing details. However, FlatpanelsHD has heard that A1 will be coming in at a significantly lower price – whatever that means.

"The only reason you would want 4K120 HDMI 2.1 is gaming."

I think there is another reason: next-gen 4K120 sports broadcasting using IP Multicast ABR.
