LG launches its first LED TVs, starting at $70,000

LG Electronics has launched its first-ever LED TVs, called DVLED, designed for residential installations. The LED TVs are available in 81- to 325-inch sizes with HD, 4K or 8K resolution, starting at $70,000.

LG informed FlatpanelsHD that prices range from $70,000 to $1.7 million US dollars depending on the size, resolution and other factors. This compares to $155,000 for Samsung's first 110-inch LED TV.

It is a first step for LG but LED display technology is unlikely to supersede OLED any time soon. There are still many challenges to overcome besides costs. The 108-inch 2K model, for example, consumes up to 1800W while the 325-inch 8K model consumes up to 16500W. Heat generation is significant and the screens are very heavy (up to 1000 kg).

Skyworth launches 4K OLED TVs in the US, starting at $1200

Skyworth's new XC9000 OLED TVs come in 55 and 65 inches, starting at $1200, with features like Android TV, Dolby Vision and Atmos, and a 60Hz panel.

Last year, Skyworth announced plans to start a global expansion and the Chinese company's OLED TVs are now available in the US through Amazon.com.

The company's XC9000 model is available in 55 and 65 inches. Like LG A1, XC9000 comes equipped with a less capable 60Hz OLED panel as opposed to the 120Hz OLED panel in most other OLED TVs including Skyworth's more expensive XC9300 model that has yet to appear.

Skyworth XC9000 is available now in 55 and 65 inches for $1200 and $1600 respectively – $100 and $200 less than LG A1.

Update: Dolby Vision 120Hz firmware for 2020 LG OLED TVs (CX, GX) now available

Update: The firmware is now available for manual download via LG's support pages in the US (ver 04.30.10), the UK (ver 04.30.10), and elsewhere. The new firmware also fixes the VRR counter for HDMI 2.1 input in the info box that can be enabled by pressing the green button multiple times.

Vizio now makes more money from ads & subscriptions than from selling TVs

Vizio's gross profit from ads, subscriptions and data collection is now more than double its profit from selling actual TV screens, according to the company's earnings report as noted by The Verge.

In the company's latest earnings report, it was revealed that Vizio's Platform+ segment which includes data collection and advertising had a gross profit of $57.3 million which is more than double compared to the $25.6 million profit it made selling TVs.

Not sure how this will take the world by storm, unless they can get TVs into customer’s homes for under $1,000 US. Current year LG OLEDs are $1299 for 55” at Costco tomorrow (I believe).

And how long to ramp up to the 77 and 88” models? Even Joe and Jane 6P in the US are upsizing their living room TVs 📺. (Hypothetical question, answer not required. )
