That's all good. It was obvious it could go that way w/ the internal mismatch on direction. Samsung don't need the older OLED tech since they have QD

Traditional OLED needs to and will be evolving in coming years. With the chemistry (for color luminance) and the brightness specs. Also heatsinks hopefully becoming ubiquitous in the A brands. Not to mention inkjet printed OLED on the horizon. WOLED is gonna NEED to move to the new phase.

Samsung faces technical problems with its microLED TVs

Quote:
Samsung is offering high-end microLED ultra-premium TVs, and has recently made plans to start producing smaller-size LTPS-based panels in an attempt to widen the market (even though prices are still extremely high and volume is very low).

According to a new report from Korea, however, not only that Samsung cannot really find customers for its TVs (which isn't a surprise given the price), the TVs are also suffering from high defect rates - even in units shown in retail or showcase events. The report suggests that the high level of defects in the TVs have caused Samsung Electronics to decide to currently not expand its microLED TV lineup, and has postponed the release of 80-inch and 90-inch products indefinitely.

Towards the end of 2020, Samsung announced it's first "consumer" MicroLED TVs (on LTPS backplanes, rather than PCB used by Samsung for its professional models), including smaller 77-inch to 89-inch models. The smaller models were scrapped later in 2021, and then Samsung further delayed its plans for "consumer" microLED TV production. In June 2022 it was reported that Samsung decided to move its MicroLED TV production from its Vietnam fab to its fab in Korea, and to start producing the TVs in Q3 2022. But now we hear that the production is delayed again, and that there's no real target date to initiate production.

Samsung's LTPS panels were supposed to adopt chips made by PlayNitride, sized 34x85 um. Its current PCB-based microLED TVs use larger chips produced by San'An Optoelectronics.

Oh, man. Micro can't but take yet another hit for the hopeful. And those of us whom tempered our expectations and looked to other display verticals to put stock in delivering; decently vindicated

So same issue as was reported years ago; low yields. Doesn't seem like they've made any meaningful strides there. Guess QD-OLED is going to be the top of the line product for the time being.

I guess size will be limited to the largest box you can get through the typical front door.

Unless they come with rollable screens, I will not be going for a 100" rigid TV. And screens so large the built in speakers will have sounds coming from close to the floor

That 136" looks good. I would be keen on one of those.

It's a prototype BTW. Only Samsung will sell you a microLED display with the cheapest being $110,000 for a 110". Of course theres a monthly/yearly maintenance charge(s) to deal with but not too much has been revealed about that. Just that they exist.

Of course you should expect your energy bill to go through the roof as the promise of low wattage use microLED displays isn't here yet - and may never be.

MicroLED just may be the biggest promise/never came to pass display tech ever created for consumer use.

Professionaly - it's a winner. Coupled with Unreal Engine it is changing how movies are made.

I think that, room permitting, there's every reason to expect sizes to eventually end up somewhere around the range of THX and SMPTE recommendations -- the former for cinephiles who want an immersive theatrical experience and who have surround/Atmos setups; the latter for people who just watch TV and use the built-in speakers or maybe a little soundbar.

(I also think that for many people, the room does not permit, and they'll be stuck with 55-65" dinky TVs above their fireplaces forever.)

Samsung 65 QD-OLED is £1800 in the UK. That's a great price and almost £1000 cheaper than the Sony A95K.

If I have the money next year which looks highly unlikely, I will happily replace my 77A80J with a 77 QD-OLED and the Sony ZD9 for a 75 or 85 LCD TV.

Hope they can fix the raised blacks in rooms with ambient light on those upcoming QD-OLED models, as it seems to be a problem even if light isn’t hitting the screen directly. They almost seem to behave like projector screens in that regard.

One of the big selling points of OLED is their higher contrast and darker blacks, and if they have raised blacks, well, it kind of makes those advantages useless compared to some LCDs, unless you have a pitch-black room every time you watch any content.
