LG Display Introduces World's First 48-inch Bendable Cinematic Sound OLED Display

LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, announced that it will showcase the world's first 48-inch Bendable Cinematic Sound OLED (CSO) optimized for gaming at CES 2021. The 48-inch Bendable CSO display utilizes OLED’s advantages as its paper-thin screen bends and unfolds with a curvature radius of up to 1,000R, meaning that it can be made to bend up to a radius of 1,000mm without affecting the function of the display.

It can therefore be turned into a flat screen while watching TV and used as a curved screen while gaming. The curved display offers a uniform viewing distance from the middle of the screen to its edge, maximizing the visual immersion that is popular among gamers.

Samsung Display postpones plan to end LCD panel production

Samsung Display had planned to terminate production of LCD panels by late 2020, leaving Samsung Electronics to buy LCD panels from Chinese makers. The plan has now been postponed.

The latest Mini LED advancements are being branded as “Neo QLED” and will be found in several different tiers in the 2021 lineup. There are two 8K models: the QN900A (a successor to last year’s top-tier 8K QLED with barely there bezels) and the QN800A. From there, three series of 4K TVs will get Mini LED: the QN95A, QN90A, and QN85A.

Last month, Samsung announced that it will be making a massive 110-inch TV that uses the next-gen MicroLED technology that has previously been available in the company’s modular (and only-for-the-filthy-rich) display known as The Wall. Now, the company says that 99-inch and 88-inch models will join the 110-incher, bringing MicroLED to a “traditional TV form factor” for the first time.

Sony introduces modular microLED displays

Sony said that its microLED displays can deliver up to 1800 nits of brightness, wide color gamut, 1,000,000:1 contrast, HDR, 120fps HFR, and 3D. As microLED is a self-emitting display technology, you will actually be able to enjoy all those nits (unlike an LCD TV with a zone-controlled backlight).

LG Acquires Majority in TV Data Firm Alphonso

SEOUL, South Korea & MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.—LG Electronics has made an investment of $80 million into TV data and measurement firm Alphonso that will give LG a controlling stake of more than 50% in the company.

LG plans to integrate Alphonso software and services—including Alphonso’s linear and OTT analytics, targeting, advertising, media planning and video AI capabilities—with its home entertainment products. LG says this will result in a owned and operated first-screen, cross-device advertising platform with integrated analytics platform for LG TVs and the smart TV marketplace.

“Our investment in Alphonso is a key component of our digital transformation strategy focusing on AI, big data and cloud to fundamentally change how consumers interact with their devices,” said Park Hyoung-sei, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company. “With Alphonso’s TV data analysis capabilities, LG will be able to provide even more customized services and content to consumers and we are proud to welcome Alphonso to the LG family.”

The X90J doesn't have X-Wide Angle in any screen size, either.

I'm curious about the dimming zones. I'm expecting the X95J to match the X950H, and the X90J the X900H. But we'll see.

I do like that the entire premium lineup shares the same processor. And I also like that the model numbers are now the same in every region, less messy that way.

I think that was a given in helping drive down the cost of the chips. Maybe Geoff can field that one.
