Yes, LG's 2022 97" OLED TV will be a 4K HDR TV. Sorry I can't say more at this time.

Robert,

With Samsung beginning mass production on OLED and all the major manufacturers now involved with the technology, taking into account the current chip shortages, what are we possibly looking at for average prices on the popular TV sizes in 2022

Very good points, but it's not easy to speculate on 2022 OLED TV prices at this time. Prices now are at an all time low for the very excellent new 2021 OLED TV lineup.

Also, as you likely know Samsung's QD OLED will be limited to a maximum screen size of the 65" class and the prices will be very high at launch. So I don't expect we'll see any price pressure from QD OLED entering the market.

With all this said I am very interested in Samsung's new QD OLED display technology and it's anticipated very high performance color accuracy, color saturation and color volume.

I was thinking about getting an 83" when the price drops down to $3,500 or so. Competitive with current 77" prices. I currently have a 75" 4k lcd that works fine and going to 83" is borderline worth it. Now with 97" coming out, I'll probably wait a few more years for that.

Bummer was hoping we might know what they will drop to or rumors of what they will begin at. If I buy at all next year, idk if I will or not I still have my 77" im paying off through October of next year. I either want an OLED or a Laser projector for what will be my media room downstairs. decisions decisions thank god I dont have to make them until 2023 or so lol

Good points, Robert. I'm a few days shy of 45, and to think that I can pick up a 55" LG C1 for about $1,300 is mind bending. It wasn't that long ago that OLED would have cost a man five figures. I can recall my college years when the 26" CRT my dad gave me for my apartment was a "big" display.

AUO to supply LTPS TFT backplanes to Samsung's next-generation microLED TVs

Quote:
According to reports from Korea, Samsung Display recently approached AU Optronics with a request to develop a 12.7" microLED LTPS TFT backplane to be used in Samsung's MicroLED TVs.

These new backplanes will be used in Samsung's 2022 microLED TVs. This will be a change from Samsung's current microLED TVs that use printed circuit boards (PCBs), and will allow Samsung to release TVs with higher pixel densities, and thus enable smaller 4K TVs. According to the report, Samsung's plan is to launch 89-inch, 101-inch and 114-inch LTPS-based microLED TVs in 2022.

The reports suggests that Samsung's goal is to acquire these 12.7-inch backplanes at around $70-$80 per unit. But actual costs could be around double due to low production yields (as the TFT production is complicated and requires double the masks compared to OLED backplanes).

A single 89-inch MicroLED TV will require 49 12.7-inch backplanes (7x7) - so just the cost of the backplane is expected to reach around $7,000 USD.

Can you tell us when your NDA expires so we know when to check back?

I'm fascinated by the interplay of pricing between a 97" 4K OLED and the 88" 8K OLED.

The 8K OLEDs are insanely priced. Add in the "take it or leave it" base on the 88" 8K and it's really a non-starter IMO.

If the 97" 4K is "panel only" and has somewhat approachable real world pricing (2-3x the price of the 83"...so $8k-15k?) I could see snagging one to replace my 88" 4K FALD Samsung.

Sony's 100-inch LCD model is already $20k and it's only a mid-range set, so I would expect LG's to cost at least double that and it's probably more likely that it will be 6 figures.

There's logic in that. However, would they really price it meaningfully higher than the 88" 8K? Something about that doesn't feel right.

Are we thinking a Sony 100” a90k oled at the same price as the 83 a90j? If so, that’d be cool.😎

FWIW, we could easily have a ton of microLED TVs at this time, just not with 4K-8K resolution, so microLED HDTVs at 32-whatever are certainly something that the industry could put out to bridge the gap and push production of microLED components.

The results to one of the questions from the annual survey issued around late October by the international colorist academy was -

Assuming the ^ respondents were all or mostly dealing with grading for SDR? at the time, at least I hope so, as opposed to one would think using a professional reference monitor for grading, this most used display (by greater than 35% of the respondents) is still rather surprising esp. since the LG CX’s don’t have SDI inputs.
