That's fair. I always refer to these little thought experiments as "fun", but that's mostly sarcasm. I wonder how much the prices would go up on those sets in such a scenario, though? I imagine they would become, like, these coveted collector items almost.

I understand and agree on wanting to get a really good TV and then use it for years. I don't know how some have the energy to do yearly upgrades, exchange each TV like 20 times until they either give up or get a unit to their satisfaction, etc.
FOMO is a powerful force, especially amongst those who have money to burn. I'm glad they've done so well for themselves to be able to change TVs as often as they change their underpants, but my god it must be tiring jumping through so many hoops to find that unicorn and THEN changing it for a newer model only a few months later anyway. Not that people shouldn't want a good set with decent uniformity but the amount of actual usage these sets get from such people must be so low compared to the amount of energy and time it takes to change them over. Like I said, FOMO is the greatest factor, it's like the smug factor of owning the latest set is a more prized asset than actually watching the damn thing.

People would be welcome to give me shit for basically doing the same thing with multiple home video formats over the last 30 years but spending £20 on a new Blu-ray for a new encode or whatever is different than dropping several thousand dollarpounds on a new TV every year. But hey, it's all about perspective: that keeps me happy with Blus while others think me crazy, so if doing that with TVs keeps those people happy then fair play. It's just not for me.

Won't jump on it straightaway though, will obviously wait for reviews and more importantly see what actual user impressions are over the short to medium term.
You didn't consider getting the A90J instead?

As said, the A80J was gonna be more of a stopgap (and a much cheaper one!) while I wait and see if LCD ever gets near to ZD9-style performance, but I dunno if it ever will so now I'm thinking I'll just get a flagship OLED and be done with it. But no point spending three grand on the A90J now when four g's will most likely net what appears to be a significantly superior display. And I'm not enthused by reports about the near black detail actually being worse than on the A80J.

The A95K looks very interesting, hopefully it will be able to get rid of most of OLED's issues.

I'll be following reviews and especially users experiences with great interest.

I paid £2640 for my 77A80J. On AVForums a well known member is selling his 77A80J for £2350 as he finds it to be too big for his room. He claims to be having a clean panel unlike mine which has some banding and I am on my 3rd A80J.

Although I find A95K to be interesting, there is no going back to any TV under 75 inches. Bigger the screen bigger the immersion. Nowadays I barely use my 65ZD9 as I am so used to 77. Only use the ZD for quick comparisons.

The main USP of QD-OLED for me is the colour volume. On the A80J, colours on very bright explosions and highlights can look muted whilst the same looking a bit saturated on the ZD9.

I will happily buy a 77 or 83 QD-OLED when it becomes available and affordable.

I honestly think mental illness has a lot to do with it once it reaches that extreme level. I don't say that with judgment or mockery as I have my own issues, it's what I genuinely believe. To not allow yourself to relax and enjoy your new TV, to look for the most minor imperfections (real or imagined) until you drive yourself (and the poor retailer you're dealing with) insane, to need a new flagship model every single year... it's certainly obsessive-compulsive at that point.

I am a stickler for uniformity; just because my eye catches uniformity issues all too well in content unless it's something super super minor. And I hate when a display/projector throws sh*t into the image which is not part of the source. I've had to return two JVC RS2100s because of bad grey and black uniformity (among other things). I've seen some of the low APL screenshot images of OLEDs and my God, they look awful. Not sure I can tolerate an OLED or not unless this has improved. I rather take a lesser performing display with very good uniformity vs one with worse uniformity but superior performance.

Fully agreed. I ma a buy and hold guy and basically marry my display or projector when I find a good one (fairly flawless). It's why I still have my RS440 despite doing static tone mapping (via Panny 820) - no visible, annoying issues from my seating position. Great uniformity. I still might upgrade, but not until I know I am settled in with a new unit will I sell my existing one. Learned that lesson hard years ago.

LG 2022 TVs pricing in Europe indicates deflated sizes at inflated prices. Inflation is going to dent disposable income for the many.

Hoping BoJo's six point plan doesn't work against the UK as we want TVs at rock bottom prices.

Time will tell.

Helio Display Materials: First Oxbridge Spin-Out Raises $4.75m to Improve Screens

Quote:
Based in Oxford, the first joint spin-out from two of the world’s highest ranked universities for research, Oxford and Cambridge, is ready to partner with companies in the display supply chain. Using the power of perovskites, Helio intends to tap into the $120 billion display module market by solving a problem facing LCD and large-area OLED displays.

Existing display technologies filter white light to provide the red, green and blue light needed for the pixels that make up the image. Filtering means that the power in the unwanted colours is lost. Perovskites are photoluminescent and can convert light directly into the desired colour which is hugely more efficient. They also emit a very narrow spectrum which maximises colour gamut, enabling the display to reproduce many more of the colours that we perceive in the real world.

I am interested in hearing about the price and impressions of the G2 97 inch model. It could be an option for my basement theater build.
