What's strange is HDR bright scenes having higher scores on the OLEDs than the Mini-LEDs.

Overall score.

Sony XR90 - 8.1
Sony A95L - 8.9

You have the HDR dark score of 8.1 for the XR90 instead of HDR Bright of 7.6 which is worse than the Samsung. The OLED Sony A95L is 9.1 not 8.9 per the website.

So unless the website is wrong it should be:

HDR Bright:
Sony XR90 - 7.6
Sony A95L - 9.1

Looks like the scoring methodology for Mini-LED was different compared to the OLED. So not good to compare Mini-LED Vs. OLED scores.

How does the Sony Bravia 9 do so bad at bright HDR in your shootout? I thought brightness was the miniLED strong suit. I don't need the Bravia 9 to win the shootout but that is a surprising score.

It's content specific and without knowing the exact scenes used to judge that category we can't really understand the situation.

Maybe you have already seen this video, but a youtuber made comparisons of the G4, S95D, and Bravia 9 (calibrated by Value Electronics) to find out how they could up hold against the BVM reference monitor.
8:58 in the video below:

He chose a movie called Alpha from 2018 because of its aggressive HDR grade which he believed would play to the Bravia 9 strengths. All TVs did pretty well in fact but the the OLEDs were held back by ABL in a few scenes.

For the VE shootout, Michael Osadciw (one of the judges) shared his thoughts about the Bravia 9 and went on to describe it as the home version of the BVM for "select scenes". I interpreted that to be high APL scenes in general and maybe others where bright highlights happen of a favorable size and location so that the backlight is allowed to fully unleash on them.
7:42 is the timestamp for the comments..

Another thing to note about the shootout this year is that the displays were presented as 2x2 stacked configuration. Not a big deal for OLEDs because of their incredibly strong viewing angles, but it's a poses a challenge for the LCDs. It was reportedly difficult for judges to evaluate every LCD from dead on center which is their sweet spot. For example the Bravia 9 was on the bottom row a couple inches off the ground so to look at it straight on you would need to almost be sitting on the floor yourself. As a tall person I can confirm that the Bravia 9 looks horrific from a higher vertical angle the closer you walk up to it and begin looking downward at it.

Extra video post shootout which puts them at a more similar height but is only comparing out of the box accuracy. No calibrations.

There has been tons of positive LG videos before the shoot out as well. Sony bots are hilarious.

It's almost as if reviewers all upload at around the same time because of review embargoes or something.

Panasonic was my first HDTV and I'm thinking they could be my first brand of UHDTV and second brand of UHD-BD player, if these new TVs pan out.

My HDTV is a 65" Vizio V-Series V655-J09, and I've had it almost 3 years. For a long time, folks told me it wasn't even 4K compatible, but then I contacted Vizio directly and they assured me otherwise. When I bought my 4K player and started watching some Ultra HD discs, I was truly amazed. A few have said my set isn't bright enough, but with due respect I call BS on that. It works just fine for me.

200 nits peak? 75% coverage of P3? Jesus Christ. It may say it can do HDR but that's not HDR, nor is it WCG because P3 is only about 25% bigger than 709 anyway. I'm happy that you're happy, but people weren't kidding when they said it wasn't 4K compatible. It is, but it isn't.
