Worlds first Ultra Short Throw DLP projector with both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision HDR

This is good news that AWOL will be the world's first Ultra Short Throw DLP projector with both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision HDR. Just need to connect the projector up with wired RJ45 ethernet or WI-FI to get the Dolby Vision HDR firmware update. Now they just need to start making some newer models with native 4K light engines instead of native 2K light engines using pixel shifting.

Quotes

“AWOL Vision Laser Projectors Have Been Officially Dolby Vision Certified”
“We are excited to inform you that all of the following AWOL Vision laser projectors have been officially Dolby Vision certified by Dolby Lab:

LTV-2500: Evaluation Number 704794A
LTV-3000 Pro: Evaluation Number 706271
LTV-3500: Evaluation Number 706272
LTV-3500 Pro: Evaluation Number: 706273”

Hopefully both JVC and Sony well consider developing some native 4K LCOS projectors that have both Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10+ from the same projector. Since we are now seeing native 2K DLP projectors with Dolby Vision HDR and sometimes both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision HDR from the same projector. At the time of this post JVC only uses HDR10+ and Sony only uses HDR10. The ideal native 4K LCOS projector should use both Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10+.

Also native 2K LCD projectors are only using HDR10+ and not Dolby Vision HDR yet. The ideal DLP and LCD projector should have native 4K light engines with both Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10+ from the same projector. Since the year 2016 JVC and Sony have been 7 to 10 years ahead of the consumer DLP and LCD projector industry when it comes to high quality Japanese engineering by offering exclusive native 4K light engines with no pixel shifting needed. The DLP industry is about to launch some $30,000 4K light engine projectors with 8K pixel shifting. But most likely around the year 2026 JVC and Sony will most likely launch some native 8K LCOS projectors without pixel shifting technology.

This Sony VPL-GTZ380 is a nice native 4K SXRD (LCOS) Laser projector for $80,000. 10,000 lumens with HDR10. Will outperform any low end DLP projector with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision HDR. Some people also prefer HDR10 when compared to HDR10+ and the consumer version of Dolby Vision HDR. But since under $2,000 DLP projectors now have all the HDR formats including HDR10+ and Dolby Vision HDR, Sony should consider offering a firmware update to offer all those HDR formats. Some professional videophile might only choose to use HDR10 because they do not like the other HDR formats, but in the ideal world all projectors should have all the HDR formats.

Default Barco Residential’s Nerthus projector

Thanks to page 11 and 12 of the September/October 2023 Widescreen Review magazine I just became aware of the state of the art Barco Residential projector called the Nerthus. I do not know the price on this projector but it most likely is well over $300,000. The specs are amazing for this 3 chip DLP projector. It offers true native 4K resolution (4,096 x 2,160) using a three chip 1.38 inch DC4K imaging chip. The light output is up to 32,000 lumens. The light source lifetime is 40,000 hours which is double the lifespan of some consumer projectors. Blu-ray 3D is supported using either passive glasses or active glasses. One can play either DCI encrypted content on the projector or one can play 4K Blu-ray or other 4K HDR consumer content. However, this projector only supports HDR10 and in the ideal world even if some videophiles do not like the consumer version of Dolby Vision HDR or HDR10+, all projectors should support all the HDR formats. However in Barco’s defense they make a good argument on why HDR10 on a high-end consumer projector is the best HDR format to use.

Click on the following link regarding why HDR10 is better.

Default Barco Njord Cinemascope projector

For those consumers looking to spend under $200,000 for a DLP projector, the Njord CS projector for $164,000 is available from Barco dealers. This projector supports only active 3D and not passive 3D when using the legacy Blu-ray 3D feature. The projector has 9,000 ANSI lumens with up to 20,000 hours life on the laser. However, this projector does not have a native 4K DMD imaging chip but instead uses the latest 0.9 DMD imaging chips with optical pixel shifting to offer 5K resolution (5,120 x 2,160) with realistically most likely true native 4K on the screen. While its better quality to have native 4K DMD imaging chips instead of pixel shifting. According to various sources some pixel shifting done with optical and electronic means results in no resolution loss on the screen even though the DMD is not native 4K. Pixel shifting is complicated and any consumer interested in paying $164,000 for a projector should do more research, but most likely the Barco Njord is one of those high-end projectors that has no resolution loss when optical or electronic pixel shifting occurs. Instead of paying $300,000 to $400,000 for a projector with native 4K DMD imaging chips, the Njord pixel shifting technology with DMD’s below 4K (5K), in theory should offer the same resolution on the screen as a top of the line 4K projector. It’s the lower end DLP consumer projectors sometimes under $100,000 and especially under $30,000 that uses pixel shifting technology that does not achieve true 4K on the screen like what is advertised. Since almost all DLP projectors lack native 4K DMD imaging chips, we really need professional reviews from Widescreen Review magazine and Sound and Vision magazine mentioning which brands and models of DLP projectors actually achieve native 4K resolution when using high quality optical or electronic means to pixel shift. Many models of DLP projectors that claim 4K resolution with pixel shifting actually never are able to do so.

The following link touches on this pixel shifting issue.

Default Good projector article to read

4K Projector Buyer’s Guide

Select quotes from article:

"Native 4K vs. Pixel-Shift"

"Of all the projectors on this list, only the dedicated home theater models are native 4K. The others employ pixel-shift technology to display more pixels on the screen than the imager actually possesses. This is achieved by rapidly shifting the position of the imaging chip, either between two points (2X) or four points (4X) pixel-shifting. Technically, 4X pixel-shifting can project an image with 4K resolution although the pixels themselves do overlap, so it is not possible to reproduce a 1-pixel checkerboard pattern. Nevertheless pixel-shift has proven effective at increasing resolution while simultaneously mitigating the "screen door effect" seen with native 1080p imagers."

"Interestingly, the impact of a lens is such that a DLP projector with 4X pixel-shifting and a really sharp lens can resolve detail as well as, or perhaps even better than, a native 4K home theater projector. This means that for a dedicated home theater projector to fully render 4K detail, it needs a high-grade lens, which often comes with a significant cost if it is to feature zoom and shift capabilities."

JVC has came out with some new and improved projectors with higher contrast range. The new native 4K LCOS projectors and also in the simulated 8K projectors that use e-shift technology have better contrast range now. Most likely in the year 2026+ both JVC and Sony will introduce the world's first consumer 8K LCOS projector with a 8K light engine.

Select quotes from article:

“Slated to ship in June, the new DLA-NZ900/DLA-RS4200 (shown, $26,000) and DLA-NZ800/DLA-RS3200 ($16,000) projectors are hailed as “vastly improved” over current JVC projectors, boasting a new brighter version of JVC’s proprietary Blu-Escent laser light engine and a new 4K D-ILA device said to improve native contrast and greatly extend dynamic range over what is possible with its current top projectors.”

“Further bolstering performance is a new third-generation 0.69-inch native 4K D-ILA device said to achieve sharper images and a native contrast that is one-and-a-half times higher than the current flagship DLA-NZ9 projector. Rated native contrast ratio is 150,000:1 for the DLA-NZ900/DLA-RS4200 and 100,000:1 for the DLA-NZ800/DLA-RS3200.”

“Even though TV screen sizes are growing by leaps and bounds, the DLA-NZ900/DLA-RS4200 and DLA-NZ800/DLA-RS3200 projectors still have a big leg up with their ability to project images up to 300 and 200 inches (diagonal) in size, respectively — an ability that, of course, carries a substantial premium.”

Default Low cost passive glasses 3D DLP technology thanks to Hisense

It used to cost $25,000-$30,000+ for a special DLP projector setup that uses passive glasses, and active glasses DLP projectors were under $20,000. Thanks to Hisense all their new 2024 DLP projectors will now use passive 3D glasses instead of active 3D glasses. And the passive glasses 3D DLP projector only costs $3,500. Active and passive 3D glasses have the same quality, but the advantage of passive glasses is they are cheaper and no battery to charge.

UPDATE, appears the new Hisense DLP projectors will all be active glasses instead of passive glasses. Beta spec sheet was wrong

The Horizon Ultra DLP projector for $1,700 is a very low-quality entry level DLP projector that uses a 0.47 DMD imaging chip that only offers native 2K (1920 X 1080P) and then with rapid pixel shifting technology simulates 4K resolution. While the lamp life is 25,000 hours, the projector lacks HDR10+ and only offers Dolby Vision HDR and standard HDR10.

Select quotes from Sound and Vision magazine review

“The Horizon Ultra utilizes TI’s 0.47-inch 4K DLP chipset with rapid pixel-shifting and supports Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG.”

Default 3D FRAME RATE AND REFRESH RATE NEEDS TO BE HIGHER TO OFFER QUALITY 3D (DLP is King)

The best quality flagship 2D OLED screen from Samsung is the 77 inch S95D for only $4,599.99 list price. Native 4K. However once again Samsung only supports HDR10+ and does not offer Dolby Vision HDR. Also this display has a 144Hz for 2D only which improves motion for 2D content. Its too bad 144Hz was not offered back in 2010 to 2016 when 3DTV’s were being made. While a DLP projector can give perfect 2D motion at 24fps and 48fps, single DLP projectors need 144fps for perfect 3D. Therefore, its possible an OLED screen might need 240Hz, 288Hz, or 480Hz to offer flicker free good quality 3D without ghosting (multiplies of 48fps). But of course 3D is now only offered on projectors and 3D has not been offered on a flat panel screen since the year 2016.

A full frame 70mm IMAX camera has a native resolution of 18K. So maybe one day some 70mm film stock might be scanned at 18K or 24K resolution. Sadly, the current generation of dual projector IMAX and Dolby Cinema theaters are only using native 4K DLP projectors with Dolby Vision HDR. In the future IMAX theaters and Dolby Cinema theaters might be upgraded to dual native 8K DLP projectors with higher quality and brighter HDR nit levels.

There are some people that believe large LED flat panel screens one day in decades to come might replace all commercial projectors in movie theaters. Most movie theaters need an 8K or 4K LED flat panel screen in order to offer 300 nits brightness levels, since many older IMAX and Dolby Cinema theaters have a maximum of 108 nit for Dolby Vision HDR. However, with more advanced and brighter DLP projectors over 300 nits and even over 1,000 nits can be achieved. While Dolby Vision HDR for the home and Cinema are completely different formats. The home version of Dolby Vision HDR is capable of 8K resolution at 12 bit color and 10,000 nit peek brightness. But so far in the year 2024, 4,000 nits peek brightness on protype displays for the home is the best brightness level of HDR. In the future 10,000 nit and higher displays will result in 4K Blu-ray players and displays no longer needing to use tone mapping technology. Tone mapping is needed on legacy displays that cannot offer high enough dynamic range with low nit levels.

Some select quote from one article.

“Pixar’s newest animated film Inside Out 2 hits the big screen today, but only about 100 theaters worldwide are equipped to show it as the director intended. The sequel to 2015’s Inside Out was created to be viewed in HDR, with 300 nits peak brightness and an expanded color range. Unfortunately, the number of movie theaters that offer HDR-certified direct view LED displays is miniscule, but Pixar is looking to change that.”

“Manufacturers have begun to offer HDR direct view LED displays to theaters, such as the Samsung Onyx line, which began a global rollout in 2019. Thus far, the high cost of installing LED screens has kept HDR from catching on in more theaters, though some companies claim to be developing projection systems that can display HDR content. Until then, or until installation costs drop, movie goers will have to go the extra mile to see Pixar’s films as they were intended to be seen.”

The Fall 2024 “The Absolute Sound” magazine published a 2024 Ultimate Directory to High-End Loudspeakers and Cables. Around a 192 page magazine. On page 120 one can buy a 1,333 pound speaker that costs $775,000 each. Then on page 179 two 12-gauge 10 feet speaker wires cost $106,700. For a 7.1 speaker system or 13.1 speaker system one is looking at several millions of dollars, perhaps $10 to $20 million depending on brand and model. Of course, the magazine does list entry level speaker for $249 each and speaker wire for $45. A wide range of products to choose from for any budget.

Default Sony has developed a new native 8K LCOS chip

Sony has developed a new native 8K LCOS chip with true 8K resolution with no pixel shifting used

According to page 6 of the May/June 2024 Widescreen Review magazine, Sony has developed a new 8K LCOS imaging chip that offers true native 8K resolution with no pixel shifting used. In fact, Sony has never used pixel shifting on any of their LCOS projectors. While there is no news of when this 8K LCOS chip will be placed in a actual new model 8K projector. There is a strong possibility by the year 2026+ that Sony will release a new 8K projector for commercial movie theaters and/or a home theater 8K projector. 8K flat panels and 8K projectors come first before the release of a new native 8K optical disc home format or 8K streaming box.

Texas Instruments today announced a new DLP projector controller that is low power, smaller, and faster then any other prior controller. I took a look at the new May 2024 specs sheets and up to 240Hz is supported for 2K (1080P) resolution or 120Hz for 3D, however only 60Hz is supported for native 4K (2160P) material. While both Sony and JVC for almost a decade have supported native 4096 x 2160P from their 4K LCOS light engine, the new Texas Instruments DLPC8445 controller is only good up to native 3840 x 2160P which is fine for 99% of consumer use of the home version of 4K. While this is good that maybe now consumers might start seeing native 4K DLP projectors without pixel shifting technology needed. Since around 2016 both JVC and Sony have had native 4K LCOS projectors that need no pixel shifting. Also Sony has just developed in 2024 a native 8K (7680 x 4320P) LCOS imaging chip for a possible new 8K LCOS projector in the year 2026+ that does not need pixel shift technology (Sony never uses pixel shifting technology and prefers native 4K and 8K imaging chips).

Select quotes from article

“Texas Instruments (TI) today announced a new, super-compact display controller that will make it possible to build the “smallest, fastest, and lowest-power 4K ultra-high-definition (UHD) projectors ever.”

“At only 9mm by 9mm (0.35 x 0.35 inches), or the width of a pencil eraser, the TI DLPC8445 controller is one-tenth the size of its predecessor, enabling go-anywhere projectors for movies, gaming, and even augmented reality glasses.”

Epson on October 2024 is planning on releasing the Epson QL7000 3LCD projector for $30,000 that has 10,000 lumens. But sadly it uses a 2K (1080P) light engine and with pixel shifting technology simulates 4K quality. Would be nice to have some native LCD and DLP imaging chips released one day that does not use pixel shifting. Since around 2016 JVC and Sony have had native 4K LCOS projectors where pixel shifting is not needed to offer 4096 x 2160P and 3840 x 2160P resolution.

While the Epson QL7000 offers HDR10+ support like JVC’s LCOS projectors, both Epson and JVC do not offer Dolby Vison HDR. Dolby Vision HDR appears to be an exclusive feature for DLP projectors and many flat panel screens (Smart TV’s). The 10,000 lumens feature on the Epson QL7000 would be ideal for passive glasses 3D technology. But sadly the article from Sound and Vision magazine does not mention any 3D technology.

Select quotes from article

“The QL7000 ($30,000) boasts a rated brightness of up to 10,000 lumens and is also slated to deliver in October.”

“The projectors feature Epson’s 32-bit QZX picture processor and employ pixel-shifting technology to achieve 4K resolution.“

Low cost under $10,000 DLP projectors are still using 2K (1080P) light engines with pixel shifting technology (Many under $60,000 DLP projectors do not even have native 4K light engines either and use 2K (1080P) light engines to simulate 4K (2160P) quality). Also no Dolby Vision HDR, just HDR10+.

Quote

“At its core, this projector utilizes a sophisticated triple-laser light source and uses pixel-shift DLP projection technology to output 4K.”

On page 10 of the July/August 2024 Widescreen Review magazine it briefly mentions a new 3D digital camera that does true 8K Ultra HD for each eye. That is 8,160 x 7,200 pixels for each eye in 3D which is 77 percent more pixels then the 33 megapixel 8K Ultra HD specs.

On page 20 and 21 of the July/August 2024 Widescreen Review magazine it talks about prototype 16K 3D displays and 8K 3D displays. Also the article mentions James Cameron giving some high-quality 3D demo material for Avatar (32 inch 8K Dell computer monitor). However, my educated guess is that native 8K material will not arrive until 2026, and maybe as late as 2028. But once native 8K material in a optical disc or streaming occurs in 2026+, that will be a big year for early adopters to upgrade to 8K displays. However, if the 10 year cycle holds 16K displays with native 16K source material will not occur until around the year 2036+. While I would love to have 16K displays now, it would be too costly and most likely consumers will need to go through a decade of high, medium, and low cost 8K displays before 16K becomes the next big thing.

Default JVC and Sony drop 3D support on all new LCOS projectors according to experts

Bad news. It appears that both JVC and Sony have dropped the legacy Blu-ray 3D feature on all new models of LCOS projectors in the year 2024 (except for the JVC NZ900 and NZ800 which still supports Blu-ray 3D). With inflation instead of raising the projector prices we now have no 3D feature according to experts at Value Electronics and the latest Sony spec sheets.

The native 4K light engine with legacy 2K Blu-ray 3D support was the key selling points on both JVC and Sony LCOS projectors. Since the year 2010 all JVC and Sony LCOS projectors had the 3D feature and it was first removed from a entry level Sony LCOS model a few years ago to save a few hundred dollars.

It is sad but it appears that 3D is dying on projectors now and Blu-ray 3D titles will most likely go out of production now.

More information about JVC and Sony dropping the 3D feature on all new LCOS projectors can be learned from Robert at Value Electronics at the following link.

Update: The JVC NZ900 and NZ800 still offers Blu-ray 3D support. it's the upper model JVC LCOS models in 2024 that still support Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray 3D feature dropped from all new Sony LCOS projectors and the two lower end JVC LCOS projectors.

It does show the trend that Blu-ray 3D support continues to be slowly removed from all consumer projectors. Gone are the days when every new model of JVC and Sony projectors supported Blu-ray 3D.
