She's clearly just watching one of the special editions and doesn't know that many of the effects are updated. So the physical Millennium Falcon body in the Tattooine hangar looks "old", as does the little speeder thing Luke races on etc etc

I think this was the last stand for the originals ever getting an official release. We're done. It's just not going to happen.

Nah, that would be 2020 when Disney no longer has to pay a distribution cut to Fox for 5 of the 6 movies. If we hear nothing that year, then its pretty much looking like fan preservations or bust.

I remember this now or never talk over ten years ago. It can happen at any time, and they probably know people clamour for it even if it's only a vocal subset. I think it will happen eventually, but I'm a glass is half full kinda guy

Pretty much. Until last year when I finally got the 2006 DVDs with the theatrical versions as bonus features, the last commercial release of these films I ever bought were the 1997 Special Editions on VHS. So another three years will be a cake walk for me.

Well, A) who knows if I'll even live that long, I could have some random bad stuff happen to me for no reason (hey, life is cruel), B) that's a long time, and C) there still no guarantee of it happening even then.

So, Ernest in the Han Solo movie thread theorized that the "Untitled Live Action Fairy-Tale" on the Disney release schedule for July 28th this year is the 40th Anniversary theatrical re-release of Star Wars.

The argument for this:

- With just four month to go until release date this film is still confirmed on the Disney schedule, per their CinemaCon presentation

- It is EXTREMELY unusual to have such a high-profile studio have a film just four months away from release with no info on title, subject, cast, crew, etc. Where are the agents announcing deals for their actors, their directors, etc.? Why would marketing not want to promote such a production in any way when release is so close?

- Disney has a clear theatrical release slate for over three months after this date, which is when Thor: Ragnarok is released on November 3rd.

Celebration would be the ideal time to announce such a re-release for the 40th Anniversary. Put it in IMAX, maybe convert it to 3D. Easy way for Disney/Lucasfilm to make a quick and inexpensive box office splash at the take end of the summer.

I would push little kids and old ladies over to get in to see the original theatrical Star Wars at the theater. Release the special editions and I stay home.

Same here. If it's the originals I'm there, no way I'm going if it's the special editions. I've spent my last dime on anything that's not the originals. I'll just stay home and watch the de-specialized editions.

I'll bet anything Hamill's queue is a 100 times longer than Christensen's

I still think Hayden deserves far better treatment, than all the hate spewed toward him by prequel-bashers. I'd still like to meet him someday; he did a good job with what he was given.

Heh, I've been saying for a good long while (or what seems like it ) that they're gonna work in some kind of theatrical slot for it over the summer. Not in May (so as to be spot-on with the anniversary) because it's just too crowded as Ernest pointed out, but it's too big an event to just ignore completely especially when they've got a restored 4K version just sitting there. Even if it's the latest revision rather than the original original (or perhaps a yet newer edition that just happened to miraculously reverse the shitty 2011 tweaks, not unlike what happened with the sound mix in-between the DVD and the Blu release) then I'll be there.

15/70 IMAX double-header with Rogue One, pretty please with sugar on top!!!

Try not to freak out everyone but the unaltered Blu-Rays have been officially confirmed! The original unaltered trilogy on is coming to Blu-Ray this December including a 4K mastered version of A New Hope!!!

No pictures or specs yet, just that comment from Disney but that's more than enough for me!!

Full press release:

Unaltered or SE's, there's no way I'd pass up seeing the OT in IMAX (especially the TrueMax at the RiverCenter here in San Antonio). Shoot, I'd go see the prequels if they were the 3D versions in IMAX.

EDIT

By the way, it's just a guess about the "Untitled Fairy Tale", but nothing else seems to make sense. Who waits until April to promote and market a new summer film these days? Yeah, I think it's Star Wars 40th, maybe all of them.

You know the only thing less funny than an April Fool's joke about Star Wars? An April Fool's joke about Star Wars a day early. Commandment number one in the geek bible: thou dost not joke about the holy trilogy...
