Default Star Wars: The Original Trilogy (1977-1983)

Fox isn't holding a lot of cards other than a distribution agreement, but who knows how this all shakes out. You don't see LucasFilm trying to buy the distribution rights back for the Indiana Jones films from Paramount, either.
I’d give my soul to the devil for the original unaltered trilogy. I just think if there was any news to give, Disney would’ve given it by now, and any deal to strike with Fox, it’d be in the worlds. I’d give my eye teeth to be wrong though.

Hey -- just saw this last week -- in happier news for Lucas fans, Vudu has added a new HD master of Tucker: The Man and His Dream to their service. Snapped it up instantly. That movie has languished too long, it's a movie George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola can be proud of, glad to see it getting some love, even if it isn't on Blu-Ray. Also picked up (not Lucas-related) Shadowlands, Immortal Beloved, and Dragonslayer.

I wonder if we’ll ever see Dragonslayer on Blu-ray? In the meantime, Vudu will have to do.

Love that movie. I'd never seen Shadowlands, the DVD was wretched in every way imaginable...window-boxed, terrible visuals, terrible audio, turned it off after fifteen minutes. Vudu HD version is fantastic. Looks like it was shot last week. Crazy how so many things are now available on certain services in HD that you can't get on blu-ray...

What if Disney puts the Unaltered Original Trilogy on their new streaming service and not on blu ray, perhaps with some other previously unreleased content?

Yeah and they put Darth Maul and Ashoka in Rebels and gave them both a novel. Darth Maul has a comic also. Disney has been embracing the Prequels plenty.

I hear you...I still think LucasFilm is going to use that as a carrot to entice people to buy these films all over again, I wouldn't expect it to show up on the streaming thing before they've exploited a physical release window.

Speaking of, I wonder what the Star Wars boxset is gonna look like in October or November of 2020, because you gotta figure that's a certainty. Nine movies, maybe in 4k, throw in Rogue One, and Han Solo, and bonus feature discs...yikes.

And again, that's if they have any interest in doing it at all. And unfortunately, my version of Despecialized has lossy 2.0 audio . I'd give my soul to the devil for the OOT remastered. It's not happening. And if it is, it's not happening any time in the near future.

Maybe they could sweeten the deal by not including Han Solo.

As the chances of them releasing it at all are nonexistent at this point, I wouldn't worry too much about that.

What I've always suspected they'd do is only put the OOT into a giant boxed set, forcing the small market for it to pay through the nose. And I'd pay goddamn near any price imaginable for the OOT if it was the real deal. But 2020 is so far away .

Aside from seeing the OT in theaters as a kid. I will never see them on Blu or whatever latest technology, etc... again in my lifetime. Keep watching VHS, LDs and dvds.

No, to buy all rights to the film in perpetuity...making it exclusively Lucasfilm's property. I don't see Fox letting that happen without a big fight, or a very high price.

It is Lucasfilm's property, the distribution deal with A New Hope isn't that big of (or any) hindrance for them to shell out huge amounts and they'll be getting the distribution rights for the rest in a couple of years.

If you take away streaming, Star Wars has made 20th Century Fox very little if anything in the last few years.

I'd imagine Fox's rights to the X-Men and the Fantastic Four are worth far more.

Then you have a very old version or not an "official" release at all.

And that second issue must be a problem with your player or tv. I'd check into your settings.

It is LucasFilm's property. Fox only has distribution rights to one film after 2019, LucasFilm gained legal ownership to Star Wars as part of the 20-year distribution deal for the prequels. Whenever LucasFilm wants to release Star Wars, Fox says, "Yes, Ms. Kennedy!" and does what she asks, and Fox gets a fee and a cut. They don't own Star Wars. We've been through this, many times.

Well, they can ALL go **** themselves for not releasing the original movie in a new restoration in its 40th anniversary year. When I was watching CE3K in 4K it almost made me weep for how Star Wars has been treated because this is such a close analogue: shot 35mm anamorphic on 5247, scored by John Williams, VFX done on large format (albeit 65mm here and 8-perf 35mm VistaVision for SW). All three cuts looking and sounding better than ever while Star Wars is still stuck with an ageing, overblown HD master conformed to the ghastly 2011 revised version. Just...ugh. Lucas, Kennedy, Iger, LFL, Disney, Fox, whoever: **** you right in the eye.

I think due to the release schedules of the Star Wars Stories and the new Episodes, there just isn't going to be a time they'll want to release it. It would take so much thunder away from their current output.

Although with the possible shifting of schedules, May 2018 next year might be open.

But to have a 40th Anniversary and the growing popularity of 4K equipment, not to go back to the well is pretty unforgivable. Bring back George to do a final cut and re-composite the whole thing digitally.

Sure, I know they've got a new movie coming up this year, and as with Star Trek's 50th the powers-that-be feel that releasing a new instalment is enough of a 'celebration', but this ain't just any old movie, you know? It's the 40th anniversary of the greatest pop culture phenom to ever overtake the western world and what do we get regarding the actual movie? Bugger all. It's obvious Disney want LFL to hold out from any newly remastered releases of the entire saga to stop Fox from getting any more money than is strictly necessary (good thru May 2020!) but Fox will still own the distribution rights to the original movie after that date ANYWAY. So unless Disney are actually gonna try and buy them out then I just don't see the point in burying this particular flick. It's downright shameful in light of the stunning treatment that CE3K received.
