It's the 40th anniversary of the greatest pop culture phenom to ever overtake the western world and what do we get regarding the actual movie? Bugger all. It's obvious Disney want LFL to hold out from any newly remastered releases of the entire saga to stop Fox from getting any more money than is strictly necessary (good thru May 2020!) but Fox will still own the distribution rights to the original movie after that date ANYWAY. So unless Disney are actually gonna try and buy them out then I just don't see the point in burying this particular flick. It's downright shameful in light of the stunning treatment that CE3K received.
I'm honestly shocked we weren't treated to a Rogue One - A New Hope combo in theatres and home video. Rogue One was a love letter to ANH, it should have lead to a May 2017 release of Star Wars limited run theatrically.

It's Star Wars; the bare minimum sells, and they know it.

Yes but Lucus does not want you to see these version's ever again even if they bring in tons of money.

The Star Wars trilogy will never again be available on home video in this original version. And it's coming to your galaxy one last time and then.... it's gone. from a 1995 VHS trailer

If he doesn’t, he did when he hacked up the negatives and destroyed every print of the originals he could find.

It's out of his hands now. We'll get the originals at some point. But (and I've said this before), if we don't get em in or before 2020, chances we'll ever see em drop considerably.

I'd wager everything is safe and sound in the LucasFilm archive, I'd imagine all the bits removed to create the special editions are sitting pretty close to the footage they used for Rogue One. All ready to be composited digitally when they stop shredding Jar-Jar soft-toys to fill Porgs.

No one here works for 20th Century Fox, Disney or Lucasfilm so it is all just people spouting off BS at the moment. Who knows how many times the contracts have changed over the years and with the recent sale to Disney.

My point was that regardless of the details, Lucasfilm should permanently purchase whatever rights Fox still has to the franchise. Cut them out completely, and bring all the rights under the same roof. I want Marvel to do the same thing with Universal, over the rights to the Hulk.

Yes, but how much is a distribution deal really worth? People keep saying LucasFilm is going to have to pay a huge sum for it, when they could just shrug and go along with the existing terms. Point being, Fox's bargaining power for this franchise dwindles by the day.

Indeed, and the same thing applies to Incredible Hulk. Marvel/Disney aren't going to go out of their way to buy the distribution rights to one remaining movie when they own the rest lock, stock and barrel. Sure, Hulk ain't in the same league as Star Wars but even so: the returns for chasing after this one outlying movie will be dwarfed by the returns on the pictures that they do own, which in the Star Wars franchise's case will amount to LFL/Disney owning, what, 10 out of 11 Star Wars movies (9 eps, 2 spinoffs that we know of) come early 2020.

[edit] Basically as long as the cost to buy the distribution rights greatly outsizes the cost of simply licencing the thing then Disney will continue doing what they're doing, Hulk being an excellent example of this exact point in action.

Excuse you, but I work for all three of those companies. I'm also responsible for the casting of Vivien Leigh in Gone with the Wind, I discovered Marlon Brando, and I went back in time and knocked up the woman who would later give birth to James Cameron.
