I saw Star Wars during a rerelease right before Empire was released. I think it was my first theater experience. I remember having chicken pox so I was home from school and my dad brought me a C3PO action figure and I had no idea what it was. I carried it everywhere with me for the longest time and still have it standing here on my desk.

I never saw the UOT in theaters, since I was just under three years old when Return of the Jedi came out. But I did see the Special Edition of A New Hope in the theater, and my mind was blown away. Most of the changes to the original trilogy don't bother me, except for the horrendous "Jedi Rocks" musical number from Return of the Jedi.

I was 6 in 77, though like most other people in the UK I saw it in 78 on its general release (it got a limited release in late December of 77 in London).

Another Star Wars memory I have is when my family went to see Empire the Tantauns scared the ever loving crap out of my two year old brother. He was so hysterical that my mom had to take him to the lobby until they were off the screen.

I was five too. Wasn't it amazing during those years, 77-83? My whole life was Star wars action figures, play sets, and cards.

Still have most of the figures, Darth Vader case, and the Topps cards. I had many playsets including the Death Star (which was very cool), but never managed to keep hold of those.

When I pulled out the Vader case to take the pics, it dawned on me how small it was because as a kid it seemed huge.

Only present on the NTSC to PAL converted versions of the GOUT, I trust?

I liked puppet Yoda over the CGI Yoda. They just needed a better puppet.

I was 3. I saw Empire first in 1980 when I was 6. Twice in 2 days. I didn't see Star Wars until it was rereleased in the theaters. 81 or 82? I remember the theater being completely full with people sitting on the floor.

But then again, the CG Yoda is a better match for the one used in the other 2 prequels. And you can't have a dueling Yoda without it being CG

Well you could, but that'd require everything else to be practical, and that's just not practical enough for George Lucas.

I think it was more practical to change Ep. 1 Yoda and leave everything else like it was

Sure, that's your opinion. Just like mine is that puppets look better.

Oh, I'm not saying puppets necessarily look worse, not at all.

The Yoda puppet from TESB is one of the greatest things I've ever seen. The original Yoda from TPM was terrible. Glad they fixed it.

This was the only thing that ever really bothered me in TPM. I could not understand how it simply didn't look like a slightly younger version of OT Yoda.

I'm kind of agnostic on the question of puppet v CG.

The TPM puppet was pretty awful, the TPM replacement Yoda wasn't all that great but subsequent CG Yodas were pretty good and the TLJ puppet was very good.

So I guess my position would be 'use whatever you like, just don't have it suck'

As to the first part of that trade, not a big fan of dueling Yoda.

Full disclosure, I was absolutely and totally in the 'whoa, holy shit this is cool' crowd when I first saw him fire up his saber in the theater and while I wasn't blown away by that duel I wasn't turned off by it either.

But over the years that duel and the Sidious duel just feel cheesier and cheesier to me. Duel of Fates gets more awesome every time I see it, Dooku/Anakin at the beginning at of RotS is pretty much the same, an entire contingent of Jedi firing up their sabers in the arena has held up very well as a 'whoa, cool' moment and Anakin/Obi has held up pretty well too.

But Obi/Doctor Octopus felt like a prime candidate for a deleted scene special feature the first time and doesn't feel any different now and the Yoda duels almost get worse every time I watch them.

Eh. They really should've used the original puppet, or one that looked identical to the one from the OT with no bearing on AOTC/ROTS switching to CGI.

They couldn't use the original puppet - not even the original mold for it - due to deterioration. Back.on 1983 they probably didn't think they'd ever use it again, so it wasn't kept in archival-like quality, apparently.
