Yup.
It would have been a print struck for the 1981 re-release as it had the "Episode IV: A New Hope" variation of the opening. Someone at the event told me it was made for a post-ROTJ 1984 re-release, but I'd never heard of such a thing personally. |

It was a 70mm print struck for the UK in ‘81 that was never screened because it tore the first time it was projected. There’s about two seconds of major damage right as the Death Star explodes, but otherwise it looks like it could’ve been struck yesterday. http://www.jedinews.co.uk/film-music...ars-screening/ |

I'm just speculating but if it was in fact a theatrical distribution print it might have ultimately belonged to the distributor/studio. And I have a vague memory of some reference to attempts by Lucas decades ago to go after any prints that might have been out in the wild.
So maybe they tried to get this particular print back from whoever wound up with it and in the course of legal wrangling over who actually had title to it they struck a compromise along the lines of 'okay, fine, keep the print but you have to agree to no public viewings'. Or not. I'm just thinking out loud. |

I don't know the specifics of this case. But it just seems certain filmmakers need to be consulted over what happens to their work, either contractually or just out of respect. Even though Lucas doesn't own the movie anymore, they probably will still consult with him about any remaster, any changes, etc. because he's still the director of the work.

FOX wouldn't have anything to do with it before the buy-out. They would just take their cut if there was any.

If think Lucas would have just had to sign off on this one and how it was advertised. |
