I'm glad JJ made his $500m deal with Warner Bros instead of Disney.

I should have said WarnerMedia, not Warner Bros. But yes and he will be competing with Disney after TROS and I hope other SW/Marvel filmmakers follow suit to keep the market competitive.

You dont think this is entirely possible that Disney, which charges like $120 for the eh-hem priviledge of entering one of their parks will raise prices once they get past the initial launch stage? Netflix prices have risen. So has Amazon prime and cable and everything else on the planet. C'mon man. Its speculation but I think its a very reasonable "speculation". Please share the lotto numbers if you have them.

Yep - you get it. This push to streaming-only is fine for some but not for everyone. As I clearly laid out...you own NOTHING then. You just let them auto-deduct your monthly fee and they allow you to stream stuff. No ownership at all. Unless they allow DRM-free downloads which they wont.

Im more concerned too with Disney owning too much content. Thats more streaming-only/locked down content and guess what happens to the price when there is little or no competition? This just in: The price goes up and the quality could easily go down since theres no other choice. And they can muck with the content any way they see fit. Like having only one restaurant on the planet to eat at. Whats their incentive to keep the cost down & the food quality high?

I dont get why people are OK with this or dont get how basic economics/free markets work?

The price is waaay undervalued as it is. In my mind it could go up quite a bit before I find it unreasonable.

Who cares I am here to be entertained. Some things are a once or twice in a lifetime thrill. As I said before the local park charges 60, Disney Parks are better. And Amazon is still cheap, it is 10 a month.

I’m still mad we can’t watch gladiators fight in the Colosseum anymore like in the old days. I’m still waiting for my physical copy of them all!

I quite agree about consolidated studio ownership.
I would expect to see the base rate stay at or below 10.00. The have competition in Amazon and Netflix. Then another tier or two to open up the Disney vault. The have already said that they will be streaming the so called vaulted titles exclusively. They also now control Hulu. Look for Hulu to become the home of the more adult fair Disney controls. Sure, Disney has said they won't but I never bought that. The only reason to pay that much for the Fox library is to have programming to sell.

Yes, but according to them, which courts have established thanks to a crap load of money, you do not own the media anyway. You have bought a license to play that in your own home, a nasty little fact that they will never disclose anywhere on the package.

Interesting that even then they claim you don’t own it. However, streaming requires an internet service provider and a live connection. I can watch my physical disc anytime, anywhere sans connection. I understand though what they mean here. I don’t own the rights to Star Wars or anything else. But I certainly DO own the copy that’s on my disc. It can’t be pulled from a service, sent to a vault, or changed due to trying to appease some offended group. That’s the difference.

Oh and the quality is still appreciably better with a disc too.

Kippy wo

Hats off to the king of the long game pranksters, Sir George Lucas, who made yet another bizarre and unnecessary change to the "Han shoots first" scene in A New Hope and has kept it buttoned for *SEVEN YEARS* waiting for Disney to find out. Absolute badass #Maclunkey legend.

All streaming providers are starting to replace their Star Wars saga with the new 2019 versions. Hulu already have them.

But if you have to watch the special editions, Disney+ is the best way to go, at least until the inevitable 4K UHD discs are released. By all accounts they should arrive some time in early 2020, most likely corresponding to The Rise of Skywalker disc release. Probably a boxed set.

Not sure we'll see an official release of the unaltered versions any time soon, if ever, and for that reason the despecialized discs are my default preference. But I can't deny, that 4k resolution and those improved colors on Disney+ do make me smile.

I've only watched the original Trilogy so far. I'll check out the prequel upscales, Rogue One, and Solo later this week. I've not had any playback issues. Had a minor issue getting titles in my watchlist, but the issue resolved itself. Little glitches are expected with the launch of a new highly anticipated service.

All that content for less per month than I used to spend once a week on a couple of worn out VHS tapes from Blockbuster.
You prefer Despecialized to 4K77 and 4K83, Rodney?

I've been wondering what to go with for my next viewings, so this is interesting.

Lucas is a genius if this was an intentional troll job. The Maclunkey line is up there with Jedi Rocks!

I don’t think Lucas is a troll. It might appear that way, but I think the dude is just extremely nitpicky, fickle, and indecisive. Not a healthy combination. I kinda feel bad for him even though withholding the unaltered OT was a dick move.

He’s earned the right to be whatever he wants to be. When you create something as amazing as Star Wars, it stays YOUR baby despite everything else. Like any artist or content creator he’s always wanting to tweak and continue to polish the final "painting". Is it always good? Nope, I get that, but it’s HIS right.

Remember, art is never completed. It’s abandoned.

The 4K77 and 4K83 are way better than the Despecialized IMO. For one they use film sources throughout (the best condition segments from different prints).

Where as Despecialized used the Lowry HD video for the most part, some bits from a 35mm scan, and other bits upscaled from the non-anamorphic DVDs and/or laserdisc scans. Despecialized filled the gap before the 4K ones came along, and was a good stopgap for a number of years.
