What a great way to end a saga.

I don't recall Anakin fulfilling his destiny by finally defeating Palpatine and bringing balance in the force in A New Hope.

Pfft . The specific things that happen to the characters in the film, the importance of these things and the reasons are irrelevant. Or so I'm told whenever someone spots a place or thing in the ST that's reminiscent of something else.

Desert planet. Death Star. Rehash. Retread. Repeat. And so on...

Did Disney make ROTJ?

And if the saga ended in 1983, where are you getting all this stuff about Anakin's "destiny" and "balance"? Was that in ANH or ESB?

Execution is key, my friend. For example, It was already set up that in A New Hope that Han owned money to Jubba on Tatooine, so it made sense to go back there in Return of the Jedi. It's not like they went, hey! Lets go into a new planet, but make it look like Tatooine. OR, lets introduce a new Death Star, but make it bigger and badder and call it something else. That's just lazy and unimaginative.

Oh so you can "rehash" things as long as someone hinted that it might happen (or not) in a previous film.

Witness the clunky and apologetic crawl for ROTJ that does precisely less than that.

"Little does Luke know that the Empire has SECRETLY begun construction on a NEW armoured space station EVEN MORE POWERFUL THAN THE FIRST DREADED DEATH STAR."

There would be people claiming they walked out immediately after reading that if ROTJ was made today. Or people claiming that half the audience at their showing groaned, laughed or left or all three.

There was no prophecy to fulfill in Star Wars. That was a retcon. Based on the reactions to all the movies after Star Wars. That should have been the only movie. Also according to Star Wars Vader killed Anakin.

Making a planet identical to Tatooine isn't the same as going back to Tatooine.

If it was a brand new Empire, then sure. It would be a rehash. But it's not. It's the same Empire from this three-arc story. So it makes sense they would continue their plan. But if it was a different Empire or threat, then why follow the same pattern when it didn't work before TWICE?

Didn't see any moisture farms or sand people in the latest sandy planet.

By that token, you could use "the same Empire" to justify re-using any location or plot device in successive films and it not being a re-hash.

So if the bad guys where still called the "Empire" instead of the First Order, it would indemnify everything familiar in the ST from being called a rehash?

Yeah we got that. But never got anything about it being Vader's destiny or anything to do with "balance", whatever those mean.

Yeah the entire prophecy thing is silly bunk.

I don't mind the prophecy in principle. It was a good idea to have something symbolise the achilles heel of the Jedi and prompt their eventual downfall. But the actual substance of the prophecy was wafer thin and virtually meaningless (still to this day almost) thanks to the idea of "balance" having no tangible presence in the OT, which was clearly developed and produced with no consideration towards balance as a thing or a concept whatsoever.

The only tangible thing that has any relevance in the OT is "destroy the Sith". The only thing that changed when watching ROTJ after 1999 was you go "Oh there's Vader doing that thing they said he'd do in TPM. (Only to be mentioned again in ROTS, twice I think "But isn't he the chosen one...?" "You were the chosen one....?"

Yes if the movie does not define balance how can it be achieved? After Jedi all we know is that Vader defeated the Emperor. A character that did not exist in Star Wars.

Might as well. Is making it a desert planet the only route they could have gone with?

Yes, it would still be a rehash because you are using the same villains all over again for the new trilogy. Also don't pick out sequels from the original trilogy just to try to prove your point. The original trilogy is all one story, the sequel trilogy is another. Keep it that way.

He was the "chosen one" right? Yeah he went down a dark path. But at the end of the day, he brought balance by defeating Palpatine.

The title of this thread is the orginal trilogy. There is no chosen one in 1983.

Not in 1983 he wasn't. If the saga ended with ROTJ, there would be no prophecy, balance etc. That didn't come until the prequels. (And did virtually nothing to enhance the original trilogy, in my opinion)

It was nice to see that even 40 years later, Lando still shows he can smooth talk with any pretty lady.

Man, I miss the days when the story was just about a man who was redeemed by his son...simple, none of this chosen one stuff.

And yes, I know this sounds like:
