It's not really divisive - I've rarely heard anyone defend it until this thread.

More divisive is going to be when they release the unaltered version and people want some bits left in and others want it just as it was in 77, crappy effects and all.

You do realize that people actually won oscars for those FX right?

Also a lot of them hold up a lot better than the cartoony CGI stuff that's in the special editions imo.

The late 90's, early 2000's wasn't a good time for CGI for the most part.

The point is for the most part they were not crappy, a lot of the parts Lucas replaced were perfectly fine, it's just that the guy was never happy with the result for one reason or another, either wanted more windows on a set (Bespin), was worried that some shots were composited in standard 35mm instead of VistaVision (battle of Yavin, he stated that's why he replaced many shots with CGI ships), wanted to add a cut scene that couldn't be postproduced at the time (the infamous Jabba scen in epIV), modified the Greed scene (he says that it was a montage error that made Han Solo a cold blooded murderer), added different panoramic shots with CGI extra CGI creatures and actors (Mos Eisley and a lot of places in all three movies), a musical number (Jabba Palace), replaced the stand-in emperor in ESB with McDiarmind, there are a few corrections here and there to the old effects but many are left exactly as they were at the time to the point that the thing is positively jarring when watching on the big screen or in HD.

I hope they keep the original movie right down to the matte lines...

This. I'd take the unaltered cut first, but if someone wanted to just remove Jedi Rocks and ANH Jabba, I'd be more than fine with that too.

Same here. I understand the people who say a little cleanup here and a little tweak there would be okay but I'd just as soon not go down that rabbit hole. That's what got us here in the first place.

I think if they went in and did a job similar to what happened with The Next Generation then it would work, digital re-compositing is light years ahead of the optical compositing the originals had, so in theory it could look better than the day it was finished.

But the question is do they just restore and re-composite or do they tinker with such things as the lightsaber colours and Artoo's blue/black paint? Do they keep the goofs?

I think they should leave the beloved mistakes and do a new special edition with George's input, let's have one last Final Cut which replaces all the special-effects with CGI and gets it right.

If they did a Blade Runner Final Cut on the OT, that is to say if they went back to the large format originals for the VFX, got rid of the matte lines & garbage mattes and fixed a few continuity errors, then I'd be down with that. Is it the absolute original original? No, but for all of my waffling in other threads about wanting all the warts, I'd gladly take a respectful 'Final Cut' of the OT.

I'd rather they just preserve it as close as possible to what it was originally like warts an' all.

It's all part of the charm.

This. After watching the
[Show spoiler]highly publicized Silver Screen
version - and being swept back to my childhood like I haven't been in a long time - I just want the old ones looking and sounding like they did way back then. I seriously kept pausing it and turning to my wife with a big grin, saying "I feel like a little kid again." It reminded me of why I loved these films so much, and it's made me despise the latest changes on my BD set so much more.

I don't care what they charge - give me the equivalent to what I just watched (or better, of course) for all three films and I'll buy them day one. Shut up and take my money!

Oh, and people always talk about the big changes, but one that always seems to get overlooked is how they censored the blaster hits (presumably to secure a PG rating) in the special editions. It was cool to be able to show my wife the elaborate spark/squib effects they used back then. Man, it was just so much fun to watch...

It wasn't the rating what did for the blaster hits, it was part of the same reason why George had Greedo shoot first: it made the heroes look less wanton in their doling out of death and violence. Lucas went on record to say he felt uneasy about the level of violence in Star Wars as far back as 1983 (in Dale Pollack's Skywalking) so when he got the chance to trim it back some, he took it.

I've just noticed the "Disney Anywhere" digital releases that are coming, and no obvious mention of the original 3 films being "Special Edition". Was that wording dropped a while ago?
That worries me vis-a-vis the prospect of releasing the original films in their original forms - crowding and confusing the marketplace.

This is probably old news, but I was intrigued by the potential in a Luke spin-off film. It seems the perfect casting choice is available.

Well, his father was a Sebastian, once. Maybe we'll finally see his adventures while going to Tosche Station to pick up some power converters. Anyway, in that picture really looks like Mark, but in most of his other pictures there's not much resemblance. Was it edited?

No, I think it was Stan's face with Hamill's hair from back in the day. If you look closely, even in the first picture of Luke, it's Stan's face.

Damn, he looks just like Luke Skywalker! And after playing Winter Soldier, Stan knows how to act with conflict of dark and light.
