Years after their release the original trilogy are still three of my favorite movies of all time. That said, until the theatrical versions are released on Blu-ray I won't be adding them to my collection since I can't stand most of the alterations George Lucas made to them.

I'm not sure how many feel this way, and I know it has been rehashed over and over on this site, but I stand with you brother!!!! I have not flinched, nor will I until the day comes were we finally get the unaltered "theatrical" versions released on bluray. |

I've not watched the so-called uot since I don't know when. I have them on VHS. They're in the loft and there they'll stay until unless someone offers a ridiculous amount of money for them (judging by the last response I got when I offered them up on ebay, no-one else wants them either). For some reason I downloaded the fan-made edits (are they by someone called Harmy or is it Adawan?) a while back and I've not watched them either. I guess I just don't have the same attachment issues as some of the other fans. If I want to watch the original six films (because let's not forget, all of those films have been altered since their respective theatrical release) then I watch the blu-rays and I enjoy the hell out of them.

I remember Lucas talking about removing that Jabba scene in the 80s, because of the repeated dialogue from the Greedo scene. It also made Jabba a surprise for Return of the Jedi, for those of us waiting for it in 1983. Why he put it back in is still a mystery.

I think there are problems with both the original (pre-CGI, like up to the end of the 1980s basically) versions and the Special Editions/DVD editions/Blu-ray editions. They're just different problems.
I'd love restored 'unaltered' (whatever that means, because it's different to different people) versions on Blu-ray, but I'm fine watching the existing versions, and I think there are many things that are improved over the older versions. And there's still room for more improvements IMHO (mostly just very small things that they could fix seamlessly and very easily nowadays). |

The scene never made it into the film originally because there was no budget left to replace the original actor with the "proper" Jabba (which I imagine would've been a stop motion effect). So much of the dialogue was inserted into the Greedo scene instead. He put the scene back in simply because he wanted to.

Surely if they always knew Jabba was going to be a massive space slug, they wouldn't have shot the scene with an actor in costume. It would have been easier in those days to stick something in if nothing was in the frame rather than over a human already there.

Can't remember which, but one of the documentaries regarding the making of RotJ shows a few different concept ideas for Jabba. I think one had legs and multiple arms. Lucas probably didn't know exactly what he wanted, just that what he had wasn't working. It was a good idea to cut it out and fill in the blank with the Greedo scene. I think it all worked out for the best in the long run. I wish he would have moved on to new things instead of going back and tinkering.

As for why didn't George move onto new things, the special editions were an experiment to see how well ILM could work with CGI in preparation for the prequels. The special editions, therefore, being a means to an end, "going on to new things" was exactly what George Lucas did. |

That's my biggest beef with the Jabba scene. The CGI is... whatever, it's a product of its time. But the scene itself is fundamentally unnecessary and just slows the movie down.

The wampa itself looks pretty good up and fits well, until the arm is cut off. I've always thought the reaction looked vey fake and sticks out like a sore thumb.
As for RotJ, I can't stand even the thought of what was done to the music in Jabba's palace. Last edited by Rodney-2187; 02-08-2017 at 02:58 PM. |
