Harmy is doing v3 of the Despecialized which will hopefully be fully 1080p using better film sourced material.
If Lucasfilm got their act together he would simply cancel it

No he wouldn't. Chances are, there will be issues with whatever they do anyway. He would simply correct those, whether they be color timing changes or things that were specialized. Plus, there's no way they'd be so smart as to include all the different sound mixes, etc.

It would just be another "source."

How can you celebrate the release of a movie that you have made unavailable to watch?

Anyone who was a child when the originals came outa should be mature enough not to chant that. A simple "theatrical blu rays" or something would've sufficed.

Doesn't sound like suitable conditions for something so significant.

Just gotta sit tight til 2020. After waiting this long, another three years should be a breeze.

Want to see the very definition of a "screw you" to fans?

Here's the ad in the back of the newest edition of the Star Wars Insider. It's promoting the next issue that hits newsstands on May 23rd, 2 days before the official 40th Anniversary.

And what is the main thing they're talking about? The 1997 special edition re-release.

They might as well put a big middle finger on the cover.

Maybe it doesn't mean anything but at this point if Lucasfilm ever DOES release the UOT, I won't be buying it. Continuing to bury one of the most historically significant films of all time is baffling, and I'd rather give all of my attention to someone like Harmy who took it upon himself to painstakingly restore the OT.

Everyone should be downloading Despecialized. I've never watched my official Blu-ray's. Not even once. Had they not included all those special features, I would not have even purchased.
I've had a really hard time finding a good copy of ROTJ

Did people ACTUALLY expect the original theatrical cut of A New Hope this year? Let alone the entire trilogy? Disney doesn't get the home entertainment rights till 2020. You aren't getting them until then. Stop thinking you are. It's not happening. The most we'll see is a theatrical re-release of the special edition this July, with a potential Blu/4k of that. And even that is pushing it. But the original unaltered film? Get out of here with that. You have a better chance of a secret cut of Attack of the Clones using only model work and every actor replaced with Donnie Yen.

Well, it IS the 20th Anniversary of the Special Editions. How could I forget such a thing?

To be fair, I do have fond memories of going to see them back in 1997, even if I was a little "WTF?" at the Han/Greedo moment and the Jedi Rocks thing. In retrospect I consider it the first point of the decline of Star Wars but back then it was just fun to see them theatrically and there was no issues of versions being available and all that noise.

Yeah, it was still exciting to see them on the big screen in 1997. Especially the first two, as I only got to see Jedi during its original theatrical release. (The first movie I saw in theaters.) Even with the irksome changes, it was great to see them on the big screen, especially since at that time I was getting back into the franchise in a big way thanks to the Expanded Universe books.

I've told this story before, but at that time the Nintendo 64 had just come out, and I was really into the Shadows of the Empire game. When I went to see the Special Edition of Empire Strikes Back, I thought they had added in IG-88 as a nod to the game. I found out much later that he had always been in the film, but he is completely cropped out of the 4:3 version!

Believe it or not, I still haven't seen Return of the Jedi in theaters. I was hoping the 3D releases would change that, but as you can see, that's not happening now.

If you want to talk about a slap in the face, just look at how bad Best Buy messed up their Star Wars "sale" in this week's ad.
