Civil rights at that time weren't what they are now. Wookies weren't eligible for human awards. We've come a long way.

Star Wars is quite possibly the first movie I ever saw. I honestly cannot even remember a time when it wasn't a part of my life. My introduction to it was on the defunct CED format my parents owned in the early-80s. I watched our copy so many times that it literally wore out. It would freeze up, skip and eventually just stopped working all together.

I wore a few copies of these as a teen.

My parents had this and Empire on CED as well. By the time Jedi came out, they had switched to VHS.

I think we might have had Empire on CED as well. I remember we spent Christmas at my aunt and uncle's house in Oregon one year and we brought our CED player with us because they didn't have one or a VCR, and I recall watching Empire.

Do you know when those were released? Until the THX Edition in 1995, the only VHS ones we had were the CBS/Fox tapes, which I believe were the original videotape releases. Which I'd still had them just for nostalgia. Watched them so many times throughout the '80s and early-90s.

In celebration of the 40th Anniversary, we are showing 'Star Wars' and 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' in the Booth Bijou Garage Theater this weekend. And not that 1997 remake of Star Wars either, but the original 1977 film that doesn't have an episode number, doesn't mention "A New Hope", and features a Han Solo that shoots first and asks questions later.

You know, the film the world fell in love with in 1977! And in beautiful HD too!

Although I'm used to seeing them by now, I'm always struck by the difference between US and UK VHS packaging, you guys were very keen on cardboard sleeves whilst nearly all ours where in plastic VHS cases or padded cases. Ours have probably aged slightly better!

We even had custom ones too, Men in Black has the MiB logo embossed inside.

I did like the US-style slips on the UK BTTF trilogy and the Star Wars SEs back in the day.

I remember thinking how cheap Fox were for putting cardboard sleeves around special editions of my favourite trilogy. But the artwork was lovely and I'd imagine they were more or less the same in all territories.

They still shocked me though and they're holding up well/

Let's be fair, that poster makes the film look a lot better than it really is. Luke looks like an insane badass overlord, a space Scarface going down in a blaze of glory. Leia is a dressed to kill femme fatale, the X wings look like they're off to plunder and pillage rather than meekly defend.

And considering the content of the movie I bet it was intentional.

Broadly speaking, when comparing the other-worldly sense of wonder and style to be found in concept art and hand drawn / painted film posters, I find the actual film to be considerably underwhelming. There's just something magically fantastical that simply cannot be recreated in live action.

Not really, it makes Star Wars look like a corny heroic fantasy with musclebound hero and Frazetta-style hottie.
But I'm also the guy that hates when wizards are the bad guys in fantasy books, so I'm probably biased.
