You know, the film the world fell in love with in 1977! And in beautiful HD too!

I wouldn't be too proud of yourself for that, given that you're showing a classic film alongside an absolute turd of a movie.

(Oh, and Star Wars has been called A New Hope since 1979. You simply must move on.)

Take it easy. It was George Lucas's first attempt at a big blockbuster. Not every director can display the assured touch of Gareth Edwards.

For the 40th anniversary of Star Wars, Cinefamily held a special screening of this 95-minute film comprised totally of real footage of Star Wars in culture throughout its existence. Some of it is normal. Most of it is not. From classic news stories and commercials to weird parodies and behind the scenes clips, there’s so much here, it’s unbelievable. Check it out.

Amazing how back then The Empire Strikes Back received a lot of distaste from critics. Below is an excerpt from Cinefantastique's infamous review of the movie.

Quote:
Despite its pervasive impact and obvious success, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK is a lifeless copy of STAR WARS propelled chiefly on the momentum of that earlier film. Without the likes of a Peter Cushing or Alec Guiness to add some dignity and solid support, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford flounder in roles that are certain to doom their careers regardless of the series' success. Critics who labeled this film "better than STAR WARS," must have been watching the audience instead of the performance.

What's at fault is an atrocious script which marks time for most of its length, then winds up unresolved, leaving the audience dangling on a plot contrivance. I fail to see the contribution of a fine screenwriter. not to mention fine science fiction writer, like Leigh Brackett in any of it. I assume the comedy patter which passes for dialogue was the work of co-credited Lawrence Kasdan. What, after all, could Brackett, or director Irvin Kershner for that matter, do with a non-story like that supplied by Lucas?
With that said, here we are 37 years later and it's revered to as the most influential sequel and an iconic film in pop culture history.

My dad has a bunch of Cinefantastiques, almost every issue from about the late-70s to mid-80s when he was a subscriber, and it's amazing to see just how many of their reviews were negative. It seemed like positive reviews were few and far between.

Yeah, that's pretty crazy. Honestly, TESB is my third favorite out of the original trilogy. I know, that's blasphemous in most circles but that's my take on it. It's still a great film and I enjoy it but IMO New Hope is paced better and ROTJ wraps it up so perfectly.

That was very few and far between. Most of the Reviews for Empire were excellent. It was the reviews for Jedi that were much more unfavorable.

Don't know if it's been posted in here before but here's another great video where Siskel & Ebert defend Star Wars against a snobby critic.

It's so weird that that critic would call ESB a "lifeless copy" of Star Wars. New planets, new characters, new vehicles, new plot twists. It took the foundation of the original and espanded it. Hoth. Snowspeeders. AT-ATs. Dagobah. Yoda. Luke begins Jedi training. Boba Fett. Bespin. Lando. Cloud City. Carbon freezing. Luke and Vader finally meet and fight. Hand-chopping. "I am your father." Ending on a major cliffhanger.

And compare with ROTJ, which took us back to Tatooine and had another Death Star.

Jabba, his palace, slave Leia, Sarlaac, Han rescue, Yoda's death, Endor, speeders, Ewoks, "the force is strong in my family...", Luke meets Emperor, massive space battle, Luke at the height of his powers, Anakin's redemption, Emperor defeated, Rebel victory.

We, the people who actually created Star Wars, the ORIGINAL 1977 Star Wars, are celebrating the 40th anniversary of its release. So, if your name is on the credits of Star Wars Trilogy: Star Wars 1977, Empire 1980 or Jedi 1983 Trilogy...(or you worked uncredited) then you are invited. Otherwise, we love you (truly) but this is going to be an intimate gathering of the folks who worked on just the original trilogy. Only individuals and their significant others who have a credit (or worked on film uncredited) on either Star Wars, Empire, or Jedi are invited to attend. Please help us spread the word to people you know who worked on these films.
