Network Winter Sale

https://networkonair.com/245-winter-sale

- not huge (the site hasn't gone down yet) and curiously it's not a uniform discount - it can vary from 20-60% per title - but some bargains in there.

I noticed that Randall and Hopkirk Complete Series BD is not even listed anymore on the site. Is it now OOP?

Monty Python 1, 3 and 4 are decent prices, except for Series 2 which is excluded from the sale and is £22. Well played Network, well played.

Capitalising on the success of the first two Space: 1999 movies (episodes edited together as cinema features in the wake of Star Wars) ITC created what would ultimately become thirteen full-length movies for cable and home video under the banner Super Space Theater. Four of these were made from episodes of Space: 1999, though they included new music in places and (for Alien Attack) additional scenes.

Each of these four movies has been rebuilt from the High Definition restorations created for the series episodes – they are presented here in their original 4:3 fullscreen aspect ratio alongside new 16:9 widescreen special editions, with both Alien Attack and Destination Moonbase-Alpha featuring enhanced special effects. All four special editions have been re-edited, restoring scenes and adding material not in the original presentation.

Also included in this set is a rebuild of the Italian theatrical movie Spazio: 1999 – debuting several months before TV transmissions began and featuring an idiosyncratic score from the legendary Ennio Morricone, it was the first time Space: 1999 was seen anywhere in the world.

Nice one. I had no idea it'd been re-released in a proper case.

Currently £7.99 from The Entertainment Store or £8 direct from Network. On to the list it goes...

Default Interpol Calling and The Singing Ringing Tree

It's likely not high on wishlists for a television series to get a Blu-ray upgrade from Network, but Four Feather Falls aside I'd like to see Interpol Calling get a Blu-ray release by the label (sampled an episode shown on Talking Pictures TV earlier this evening. It looked like it was shot on film (unless my eyes were deceiving me).

Secondly, has anyone got Network's Blu-ray release of The Singing Ringing Tree? I looked at Mondo Digital's review towards the end of last year, and it mentions something about the master used:
Quote:
it's from a 30 fps master probably prepared for HD broadcast rather than native film speed,

According to this review of The Singing Ringing Tree (DVDCompare), it's 25fps, not 30fps, and the disc timing of 71:46 would correlate with that.

Default Dark Eyes of London

Last night, I watched Dark Eyes of London aka The Human Monster on the Network BD.

Supposedly based on an Edgar Wallace novel, the story has Scotland Yard investigating a series of mysterious deaths-by-drowning of people insured for significant sums of money. These deaths seem connected with an insurance agent cum physician Dr. Orloff (Bela Lugosi). Dr. Orloff in turn is associated with a shelter for blind people managed by the equally mysterious Prof. Dearborn, which has some curious goings-on mixed in with its charitable activities. A girl whose father was one of the victims and a heroic detective inspector from the Yard work together to unravel the mystery behind these deaths.

Dark Eyes is a brisk little program thriller and one of its biggest joys is to see Bela Lugosi get a part that does justice to his charisma and talent. Unlike many of the post-Dracula Universal films where he was handed increasingly dismal roles and treated most cavalierly, this British production is a classy vehicle for the star, and in turn benefits from his obvious enthusiasm. Also worthy of mention is actor Wifred Walter who plays an almost Frankenstein's monster type lumbering brute with impressive presence and pathos. The writing carries a good deal of snappy repartee laden with characteristic wry British humor. The film is only deficient in the striking visual style Universal's classic monster pictures were known for. While not an outright classic (and it has some eye-rolling cultural and sexist stereotypes), It is still a very pleasant entry in the vintage mystery film genre.

Network's BD features a restoration done off a 35mm positive print. It won't wow your socks off like some other high-profile restorations - there are still scratches, softness and faded shots - but it is a very decent presentation of a lower-budget vintage movie. Audio again has some issues of hiss and boxiness, but nothing out of the ordinary for such material. Supplements include a commentary and a featurette on Lugosi in Britain, both hosted by the enthusiastic duo of Kim Newman and Stephen Jones.

Packaging wise, this is a pretty swish release from Network. There is a slipcover with some gorgeous evocative artwork (different from the main cover), and the slip itself has a premium embossed texture. The reverse of the case cover contains images of vintage posters and also small notes about the restoration and the supplements. There is a slim booklet with an essay by Adrian Martin, AND there are around a half dozen double-sided postcards showing poster artwork and stills of the leading cast. I got this disc for less than 10 quid off Network's store and I think that's a serious bargain for such a posh release.

Just a heads-up, anyone that hasn't seen the film please do not go through the postcards first because they contain a potential spoiler about a particular character.

Thanks! And thanks for the review, they're always a pleasure to read, especially as we seem to have the same shopping habits.

Many thanks for your help with my query. Will be adding this title to the list of Network Blu-ray film titles I want to get (which include Assault, Station Six Sahara (this one though depends on whether it gets a North American release) and Who Done It?).

Just watched 'The Dead Eyes of London', what a great film, I'd never heard of this until a few years ago. Bela Lugosi on top form and great PQ/AQ for an 82 year old British film!
