I've noticed that Arrow seem to have started stocking (distibuting?) some Network titles including their CUT version of Night of the Living Dead.

London’s Cinema Musuem has an event on Friday 6 May:
http://www.cinemamuseum.org.uk/2022/...v-travelogues/ To celebrate their release on BluRay (DVD to follow later in the year) and unseen anywhere for decades and highly sought after, these early ’60s TV specials showcase two of the 20th century’s most iconic women travelling through and reflecting upon the cities they love. Newly-transferred in High Definition from original film elements, both shows feature sweeping, evocative scores from world-famous composer John Barry. Elizabeth Taylor in London (1963) In her very first television appearance Elizabeth Taylor, who was born in London and lived there as a child, returns to the city that will forever be in her blood and gives her impressions of and reactions to the mosaic of London and Londoners she encounters during her visit. Sophia Loren in Rome (1964) Never seen in the UK, Sophia Loren follows Taylor’s lead, but this time in Rome. She meets Marcello Mastroianni and Vittorio de Sica as she visits the sights, affectionately commenting on the grandeur of the Eternal City and the irrepressible nature of its people. Not reported by Network themselves yet but these must be imminent announcements. |

Last night I watched The Naked Civil Servant on Network's blu.
This 1975 film made for Thames Television is a biographical drama focused on Quentin Crisp, a self-professed effeminate homosexual born in the early 20th century who dedicated his life to being a spokesperson for the recognition and acceptance of gays in British public life. While Crisp had previously indulged in male prostitution and also did some work as a tracing artist, he was for the longest period making his income as an artists' model. The film portrays him as never having being in a serious romantic relationship, his associations and even sexual relations with other men being primarily an expression of compassion and friendship. The tone of the film is kept mostly light and amusingly eccentric, with witty quotes from Crisp used as inter-titles bridging scenes. Crisp is portrayed by the great John Hurt in the period going from his 20's to his 40's. The script has a cleaned-up-for-TV quality and there is a certain broadness in the swishy portrayal (I of course can't vouch for how true to life it is, and even Crisp, who appears in the introduction to the film, seems a theatrical person), but there are scenes now and then, when Hurt conveys Crisp's core humanity, the vulnerabilities and fears of a person who faces frequent hostility, and sometimes physical violence, for simply being different from the majority. The Network blu does good justice to the (I assume) 16mm production, and the mono audio mix. Extras include a feature commentary with director Jack Gold and John Hurt, a vintage portrait of Crisp, a late 80's reunion meeting in New York between Crisp and talk show host Mavis Nicholson which compares excerpts of her 70's interview of him and his contemporary profile. ![]() |
