Which included deep dive visual testing in order to investigate better video conversion practices between BT.2100 PQ and BT.2100 HLG signal formats in order to retain identical appearance of content on matching monitors, despite the fundamental differences between the PQ and HLG input signals ->

Refinement is in progress . AFAIK, there were no functional tetrachromats (referenced below the cute YouTube clip here ->
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...s#post12513184) in attendance, so everyone was playing (seeing) pretty much at the same level….vision-wise.

For those who understand Mandarin, how’s my translation of the YouTube clip interview so far?

Reporter: Arrived yesterday?
Mason Lee: Yes, haven’t had time to go places. Definitely, we will go out tomorrow night.

An article from Trusted Reviews came out today with some news about HLG. At the moment only Samsung is talking about firmware updates though Sony did hint that they would say more about HLG after HDMI 2.1 has been officially announced.

Nice article for those new to the topic, but I beg to differ with the strength of at least one of its assertions...perhaps to the videophilic masses, but HLG is hardly “a new acronym that’s a’coming”….at least to longtime readers of this or other threads here. We’ve been analyzing its pluses and minuses (in developer detail) for over a year now, referring to it by its acronym or its full name, e.g. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...d#post11040594

A fresher acronym for this forum which I don’t think I’ve specifically used in a post as of yet, but has been making the rounds in developer groups and presentations by those truly knowledgeable about investigating such things as HLG and PQ is ->

DMCVT

So, continuing on from yesterday ^ , as to another being that the realized value of the backwards compatibility feature of HLG has been a bit overstated in the past (as we were reminded on this thread by Dan, last September, following which I tested his confidence, and he passed ). Anyway, even one of the true brains behind HLG (sitting beside a true expert in Dolby, both of whom are worth listening to) doesn’t emphasize the backwards compatibility thing that much these days to those invited to recent meetings like this….

Nevertheless, overall, HLG is a good vehicle to promote awareness and thee adoption of HDR to TV watching consumers. PQ and HLG just come at the problem from two different directions and cultures. However, each meets the needs of these groups allowing a transition from SDR to HDR in the way that suits each best, which is why the ITU agreed that both transfer curves were needed…it does not create a “logjam”, it is a facilitator.

P.S.
As to the guy on the left in the pic, I’m surprised he has any hair left.

Heck Richard, at this point, I think most folks would be happy with an unofficial reliable leak from the HDMI forum as to the announcement. I believe you hoped for October HDMI news, which has since passed, are you hearing anything solid as to a next expectant date from that organization?

Six days to go before the theatrical HDR iterations (Dolby Vision) of BLLHW should be available to those cinephiles who will visit such theaters and there are more back-and-forths between the reporter, Mason and Ang Lee. Ergo, back to the translation….one moment while I rerun the video. I’ve already forgotten what was said at the opening over there.

Eh, it seems like most of these HDR thingies came with the promise of backwards compatibility but in reality it gets left behind as the complications of just getting the HDR part up and running are enough to contend with.

I am wondering if

. DMCVT = SMPTE ST 2094 (Dynamic Metadata for Color Volume Transform)
https://www.google.fr/url?sa=t&rct=j...Prft03TbjXredw

or also

. DMCVT = upcoming HDR format based on ST 2094 (aka Dynamic HDR10 or Dynamic HDR)

They have done a good job of keeping HDMI 2.1 under wraps and I don't know if it will be announced in 2 days or 2 months.

Indeed. If no-one in here is able to squeeze some juice on HDMI 2.1 then that's really saying something as to how it's been locked down. I just hope that doesn't mean they haven't been doing anything at all on it, but that's just me being the eternal pessimist.

I wish more reviews had comparisons between bluray and non-HDR versions of UHD discs too. I've got one of the first gen OLED tvs and the picture quality is great but I don't get the HDR benefits on it sadly.

Watched Star Trek Beyond last night in 4K HDR but it seemed a bit dark to me. Had to turn the backlight all the way up to 100. Recently downloaded the HDR update for my TV but I'm not sure if I watched my other 4K movies in HDR and they were alright on the brightness levels. Have to check it out today, although I'm not sure how it will be using daylight either Lots of settings adjustments with 4K...

I think the problem is with the movie (ST:B).
We have different TVs (both HDR capable) and I would go one step further: I don't think the video/audio quality of this disc is even on par with the previous ones in the series.

Well the slide from the presentation was referring at the time to the former, but keep wondering as to future developments....at least that will help maintain this thread near the top of the forum heap.
