Things are sure looking up again. Good to see the Rat still outselling Shrek, Oceans 13 Blu outselling red 1.6:1, and 300 Blu outselling red 2.3:1. Very curious to know who was promoting Open Season? I missed hearing anything about that title?!

there are several posts in the past 5 or so pages about Open Season since it was included in some sort of a sale...plus there were some promotions including Open season with the purchase of a PS3....and these counted as movies sold because that was a deal offered by those particular retailers and not Sony or the studio supporting Open Season..

There will be ~50 million HDTV sets in american homes by the end of the year. There is just over a million standalone HD DVD and Blu-ray players combined in those homes. 3+ million once you add the PS3. The high def format has plenty of potential consumers to go after to sustain the format, and that consumer base will only grow year after year. There is no rush for HDM to overtake DVD, if it ever does. In fact, 2 formats could very well coexist and be profitable....DVD and one of the high def formats. As in most cases, three's a crowd.

Makes sense to me. Much like how in football they always go toward the 50 yard line (making 2 yards or 6 feet that qualify as the 50) so that the ball is never officially at the 0 yard line (since it is a touchdown or safety then).

Not sure if you guys covered this, but the above rule means that when the YTD shows 66:34, it can mean that the ratio is over 2:1, since 66.7:33.3 would be over 2:1. Under truncation rules 66:34 basically means anywhere from 1.94:1 to 2.03:1. If the YTD moves to 66:34 in the next couple of weeks like I figure it has a good chance of doing, it might just move into the lower part of that and not really be over 2:1 though.

exactly...a high def format can be for people who have made the jump to a HDTV set and DVD can be for people looking to do the bare minimum...

DVD people will just need more "flair" on their suspenders is all...

no...this is an HD-DVD ad we're talking about here...

I think the grammar in that ad makes them appear smarter than they actually are...

I mean, their argument is attach rates and not overall sales...

how stupid can you get?

~750K HD DVD players, not all of which are 3rd gen. Still plenty of potential buyers.

Of course that is the best way. That doesn't always apply, sometimes you WANT to have nice, even round numbers, regardless of whether it is fair.

You are arguing pro-truncation, which in your example would only be 98%... even further off than the 101% that you are deriding.
I thought you were actually smart enough to extrapolate what I said into something meaningful. In my example, you truncate one and increase the other two, to give 100%. Stop trying to view this from the viewpoint that I'm an idiot because I don't fit into your preconceived notion of the universe.

Your claim that it is "standard practice" with percentages is simply not true. It may be a practice in certain fields, but it is a poor presentation of the facts and is not the predominant method by any means.
Standard practice does not equal "predominant method". Stop trying to make everything I say into an absolute.

I am NOT wrong. You are just too closed-minded to even contemplate people doing something different than your view of the universe. And, apparently, if it's not your view of the universe it is so abysmally wrong it makes you lose faith in humanity. :P

Regardless, I'm done with this conversation, it's stupid.

One guy on another board argued that movie sales don't matter, because movies just sell popcorn and the movie companies want to sell movies. Players sell movies, so player sales are more important than movie sales for a company interested in selling movies. Thus, the popcorn companies are more interested in movie sales than the companies interested in selling movies.

I agree...when you are blindly biased...you end up looking like.....well, like the person you were just talking about...

Okay guys, let's keep politics out of the discussion. That's a sure-fire way to turn a civil thread into a war zone.

Are you saying we should cut and run from that discussion?
