They have a few good titles... but I think enough people either jumped ship, or lost confidence that it will not make much of a difference.

February 19th (American Gangster) and February 26th (Beowulf) are probably the last weeks that HD DVD can hope to get a 65:35 ratio. But, morale on the HD DVD continues to slide as we speak. More and more of "them" are giving up on HD DVD every day, so a 65:35 ratio favoring Blu-ray would be a "MAJOR VICTORY!" for the few HD DVD supporters left.

their morale is so low now they're hoping for downloads to take over just so they dont have buy blu-ray. sad thing is the only reason most of them when hd dvd in the first place is b/c they hated sony. hopefully sony's recent conference where they apologized for 2007 and promises to listen to consumers more in 2008 will sway some of them. tho at this point i dont think many trusts sony.

it's funny while being sony prevented ppl from buying blu-ray, being hd dvd prevented me from buying anything toshiba. when i look at HDTVs and i see a toshiba model i think, "man those guys caused the format war, i'm not buying any of their sh*t."

PS, i hope Ironman will be on Blu-ray, it may very well be this year's Transformers. can't quite count Dark Knight since it is a sequel.

hmm American Gangster probably isnt a great HD seller, Beowulf will be tho. Still a month down the line, wonder what the status of the format war will be by that time. they may need to consider moving ahead the release dates. this possible escape clause of Paramount's is really looking interesting.

HD DVD has a big problem.

In 2007 it seemed like HD DVD would be around for a while so there was a degree of confidence for new consumers buying into HD DVD and for dual format supporters to buy a Universal or P/DW title, confident there was no Blu-ray release on the horizon.

Now we have a very different landscape. New consumers of HDM have lost confidence in HD DVD (a few will buy because the HD DVD players are now so cheap it's not so great a loss). More significant is that the enthusiastic dual format buyers of HDM will be thinking "Do I buy the HD DVD version of American Gangster and risk that Universal might announce Blu-ray support the next day - or shall I just wait for the Blu-ray version anyway."

And that is what I think will happen. Where previously a title like American Gangster would lift HD DVD into a 40%+ market share, by the time AG comes out I think it will do very well to lift HD DVD above 20%.

Retailers are cutting their HD DVD shelf space and only re-stocking the big titles on HD DVD. Consumers are seeing this happen. They know who just won the format war and they will be spending their dollars and pounds accordingly.

The question is :

Do i buy the CUT version (20mins) of American Gangster without loseless audio on a HD DVD Combo, or just i rent it to watch the Director's cut? on DVD?

I mean i was pissed because DH4 wasn't Unrated even if it was for 3 F**K and 5 secondes of alternate camera shots...

yep, i dont think they will gain any more new customers or sales from dual format supporters. the only ppl still buying hd dvd now will not buy blu-ray even after the war is over.

I went into a pawn shop to look at some musical instruments/amps etc and just out of curiosity looked around to see if they had any blu ray players. all I saw were 7 used hd-dvd players and a big stack of hd movies.

I asked the guy if they had any blu players and he said "nah and when we occasionally do we sell them almost immediately". he said he had gotten a lot of phone calls on wether they would buy HD DVD players over the last week.. Gee I wonder why.. lol!

These are all going to end up in a big ass landfill somewhere, buried in a desert.

Kind of like what Atari did with those E.T. cartridges back in the early 80's.

on the bright side, some archeologist will dig them up 1000 years from now.

Archeologist: "oooh it's a blu-ray player. I've heard these paved the way for the hi def fully interactive movies we enjoy today"

Partner: "nope, it's just a hd dvd player, which is like the blu-ray player's retarded inbred half brother."

"not exactly what I heard we were looking for, but "good enough""

Not in this day and age, Al Gore wouldn't like that.

Unfortunately Archaeologists have to piece together information, I imagine they'd end up thinking: "oh.. this must have been the most advanced media of the time until they replaced it.", then they would construct elaborate scenarios about people in 2006-ish having an HD DVD player in every home until eventually succeeded by Blu-ray.

I don't think they'll see anythings in the 60's again. That's history. My guess is the best they might see now is a 3:1 ratio (1 for HD-DVD).

I guess it'll be true, since those with HD-DVD players have to get Blu-ray players now.

I think they will... maybe in a little while, but they will. High definition is extremely addictive, especially on a large screen. So at first they will try to up convert, then they'll try to download the fake "HD" over the internet, then disgruntled and PO'ed, they'll go and buy non-Sony Blu-Ray player... it's a wound that will heal.

Hmm, so true.
I'd say the majority of us (thousands? tens of thousands??) wouldn't buy anything Toshiba for a long time now, and will not advise our friends anything Toshiba either. Personally, I passed on all Toshiba's laptops deals this holiday season. Bought three: an Acer and 2 HP's for presents and for myself. If it wasn't for all that HD DVD nonsense fiasco, I would have probably considered buying Toshiba.

Honestly, toshiba isn't a name I buy much from anyway.

I hope to all that is holy that this doesn't happen. That Atari dump was done right here just outside of where I live. If they do that to HD DVD junk, the effect of all of that being so near my city could be horrible. I am thinking along the lines of the Futurama episode where the giant brains showed up and sucked all of the intelligence out of people. I might be protected by my PS3, but what about all of the innocents here that have yet to get the Blu in their houses to save their brains?

Chris

me too, but it had nothing to do with their HDM policy, they just make bad laptops.
