Only if two items are directly opposed. If for every purchase you make on Blu-Ray one less HD-DVD was sold, then 80 is equidistant between 70 and 90.

This isn't how this market works.

Let's say HD-DVD sells 1k titles.

70:30 -> Blu-Ray sells 2,333 titles.
85:15 -> Blu-Ray sells 5,666 titles.
90:10 -> Blu-Ray sells 9,000 titles.

Thus, 85:15 is halfway between 70:30 and 90:10.

This is why people who have been claiming "Blu-Ray should do better" don't get it. It's not like I can magically force people to stop buying HD-DVDs. All I can do is give Blu-Ray a +...and each additional percentage point is much harder than the last.

*EDIT* Bah, I need to learn to proofread.

The unfortunate reality of the underdog psychology is that underdog's followers are far easier to please than the leader's followers.

That is just a GREAT post. It is makes way too much sense

While looking at next week's ad for BB, I noticed that they're having another huge BOGO offer for HDDVD again, and they're giving away an HDDVD player for free with the purchase of a particular home theater receiver.

I hope this is about emptying stocks or something... one last gasp perhaps?

Considering HD-DVD had BOGO's and 50% off sales on various stores. the current numbers are actually pretty good.

Besides, this week it's only Paramount with %50 on amazon and BB has the BOGO. So next week if we do nothing else the numbers shouldn't get any worse.

One thing that's funny though. Paramount/Universal are loosing a ton of profit just to unload this stock, they haven't even made HD-DVD seem like they are fighting.

Default How about April 1 ?

This would get enough people involved, enough of a time frame and I assume that we all buy like 5 movies at once on that day? I am assuming this will be at www.amazon.com ? and ummm how many members do we have on the site?

I am game

Noble intentions, but Blu Ray doesn't need a buyathon to win, or even to be perceived as winning. HD-DVD had a bogo and only managed 26%. In a bogo week. With no big releases on the blu side. 26%.

It's still over.

I Agree I just want to hear the spin the DUD fans try to make on the blu ray sales surge that week

That is quite possibly the dumbest thing I have ever read. By your "math" 70:30 would be half way between 0:100 and 85:15.

Well, it is annoying but not at all surprising. Lot of HD DVD deals out there so owners are taking advantage.

What would be really telling is the hardware sales. That would say if it is just primarily existing owners grabbing bargains (which I suspect).

Maybe you should read it again, because it makes perfect sense....

If HD DVD sold 1k titles and BD had a sales advantage of 70:30, that is a 2.33 sales factor. 2.333 x 1000 = 2,333 BD disks sold.

The other examples follow the same.

I wouldn't be surprised if the really goofy ones -- the ones that bought a bunch of HD DVD players to give out as Christmas gifts -- were buying titles for friends and family, or perhaps stocking up for future gifts.

Won't they be surprised when they find out that their friends and family returned their gift for an in-store credit.

I guessed way too high for last week... I forgot about the TONS of BOGOS and 1/2 offs that HD-DVD was running. All of that, and they still can barely get 24%, they suck!
