Like others in this thread have said, better to set low expectations and be pleasantly surprised (or at least not as disappointed).

If the 190k is point-of-sale, BD's mostly catalog/niche releases won't help much, and I don't think the BOGO's magically going to sell 50k POTC discs each. I'd love to be wrong, but the US PS3 price drop hasn't happened yet, nor do I think we've got the momentum from standalones to push massive numbers. I'm guessing ~250k HD DVD for the week, and less than 100k BDs sold.

Some also fear of investing into the wrong format (they are truly uncommitted to either format). They don't care which format wins, they just want to make sure they've invested in the winning one (I'm obviously not persuasive enough to sway them to Blu when that requires an additional investment of at least $400 for just the player, let alone $34 discs). Early adopters are unique. The vast majority of people see this "war" as confusing and something to avoid (if they even know it's going on at all).

For me, it's the cost of BDs holding me back from purchasing more movies. I very rarely spend full price on BDs ... they're just too expensive for me. I wait for the BOGOs and one-off sales. But there have been enough of those to allow me to buy a fair amount of BDs (waiting for my Amazon BOGOs to show up in the mail).
I see your point. It is expensive and can seem like a hobby. Actually, BOGO has changed my buying habits. I returned an entire shipment from Amazon the weekend BOGO started. I used to buy blockbusters to replace my DVDs. I still want them. However, I now wait for BOGO(and the audience grumbles as they sing about the Nielsens) . I refuse to pay $25+ for FF1 and X3. At the same time, I know that Fox titles are worth it because they invest so much in the technical aspects of the software. We need mass adoption. This will drive down prices. I WILL NOT GIVE IN TO HD-DVD.

How many did Blu-ray sell in the last reported figures, approximately?

50k, 70k, 100k?

I believe it's fair to say the BOGO deal, plus that weeks releases would double, maybe triple the previous weeks sales.

Well, even if TF did sell 190,000, all that means is they've blow their wad, IMHO. The following week should see TF sales plummet, because nearly every person who has a HD-DVD player bought it the first week.

We have Q3 figures.

Quote:
Home Media Research, a division of Home Media Magazine, said on Tuesday total U.S. sales of Blu-ray discs, using a Sony Corp-backed technology, totaled 2.6 million units from January 1 through Sept 30, versus 1.4 million HD-DVD discs sold.
Using previous data we can calculate disaggregated sales data:

Code:
      Blu-ray HD DVD
Q1 832 359
Q2 768 436
Q3 1000 605
YTD 2600 1400
(quarterly sales, in thousand units)

YTD 2600 1400
(quarterly sales, in thousand units)
So, BD had the first 1 million disc quarter! There were no real big exclusives on either side, and the roughly 2:1 ratio held. The BD:HD ratio slightly went down, but considering that the Blu side spent the entire second half of the quarter recovering from the Para***** shock, it's not too bad.

Of course, Q4 kicked off with a mini-blockbuster FF2 and now it's in the week with the first exclusive major blockbuster. By the time the quarter is over, I think we're going to see something like 2.7 mil for BD vs. 1.2 mil for DUD (wishful thinking maybe).

enjoy

Here are the YTD unit sales as given by Home Media Research and from which the above figures are derived:

Code:

          BD HD DVD
Q1 832 359
Q2 1600 795
Q3 2600 1400
Q1

Q3 1000 605

(quarterly sales, in thousand units)
Sales growth from Q1 to Q3is-

Blu-ray = 20%
HD DVD = 68%

yeah, in case you noticed...they had under 400 to start...

it's not like they didn't hit panic buttons and not have something come out like the Matrix Trilogy....I mean, they weren't going to survive on pretty much Batman Begins for the entire year....they have a few blockbuster titles...

but their strength is older titles....BD's strength is older titles and new releases...

For the week we are currently in, the fact that the Warner Kubrick titles seem to be largely unavailable in BD with apparently no comparable limits for the HD DVDs is unfortunate in terms of the sales ratios.

There is a thread here somewhere linked to a thread at AVS of hd dudders complaining they can't find the Kubrick titles at B&M except on BD. Did the SoCal fires cause some kind of distribution issue this week?

On Amazon, the HD DVDs are available for current shipment, but the BDs have a 5 to 6 week delay.

DVD sales growth from Q1 to Q3 is less than 1%.

The more you have, the smaller the numbers will be.

Percentages are not linear.

Odd. I picked them all up last night...grabbing them out of a massive stack of each. This was at a Best Buy.

Yep. If they increase my salary by 80% and Bill Gates gets a wage freeze, it still sucks to be me.

If we lose transformers week, then I think there's a chance we might lose this week too. 2001, The Shining and Clockwork orange are all delayed on amazon and other internet sites long enough to stop them from counting in this weeks sales. Although I heard best buy has theres and they make up most sales, hddvd might still win with there's more readily available along with tf residual sales. Not to mention last weeks bogo may affect this weeks sales(ppl being broke).

But if we win this week then we aint got shit to worry about.

Not unless the fire has been happening for a month. This is Warner releasing these titles right? They have had distribution issues for over a month now because they implemented some new system (technically dont' even know what it was) and it created a situation where they got behind. They still have yet to catch up. It has effected every Warner title sent to my stores for the past month.

Blu will not lose this week. Mr. Brooks and Meet the Robinsons will be more than enough. This is a case where if the numbers are true and HD wins the week.....there will be no one left to buy Transformers this week. It could be very lopsided this week infact. Of course it all depends on last weeks numbers.
