If 1 & 2 have "only" sold 45,000 copies apiece, how could you expect 3 to sell 200,000 or even 300,000?

Isn't it kinda rare to have a sequel outsell the original, especially by such wide margins?
I dont think thats unreasonable, plus Im quite certain you can expect a lot of people to buy the first 2 at the same time they buy 3.

Have we seen detailed data for the first three quarters from them yet?

I totally agree with that. Compared to earlier iterations both S3 & P3 faired rather poorly with audiences. Most people I know personally & professionally didn't even bother seeing Spiderman 3.

However, most of my notion that it won comes from the fact I'm certain Transformers only shipped 190k not sold 190k. I stopped by my local Walmart this AM and saw hundreds of copies of Transformers sitting there. They have this cube display (with 4 sides stoked) and it was full. Now if DVD sold 8 million copies in the first week this thing would have been empty. It's not like they shipped another 8 million expecting sales like that to just continue.

-Brian
Maybe they needed to ship 400k just to sell 190k. Could this be why they even shipped the faulty discs with low LFE?

Kidding aside, one number that's been popping into my head is the highdef/DVD ratio of 190k/8mil. That's about 2%, or less than one in forty. Does anyone know what is the ratio of first week highdef/DVD ratios are for other big titles this year (I'm most interested in 300 and The Departed).

thanks

Well Pirates 3 is the highest grossing film of the year worldwide. You don't get those numbers if it didn't find an audience. I think it will be the higest selling single format HD title this year. It also helps that it is being released right at the prime of the holiday shopping season.

Spidey 3 unit sales will be hard to judge from the bundles and box sets.

Well I didn't care for P3 and I didn't even see S3, but I'm still purchasing both...I need to finish the collections.

Did you ever get Jaws 4: The Revenge on DVD? I've got 1,2 and 3 but 4 was so amazingly bad. In fact,..3 was remark-ably bad it just amazes me with it's badness and yet 4 was the ultimate in badness.

I rented Jaws 4 and it was depressing to watch considering I love Jaws and I can enjoy watching Jaws 2.

I guess we can compare our Spidey boxset numbers against the Matrix trilogy boxsets on DUD.

Call me stupid, but Spider-Man 3 was my favorite in the series, after loving Spider-Man 2, and not liking the first very much at all. Pirates 3 I liked MUCH less than the 2nd, but still enjoyed it more than the first... ...Why am I even telling any of you this? Who gives a ****? I just want these goddamned numbers to come out. Sigh.

I Have to disagree with WickyWoo on this one. Pirates 3 had a huge box office. Critic scores are secondary to that. Many "critically acclaimed" movies do poorly and "badly reviewed" movies still make a lot of money. So I have no worries that Pirates will beat TF's 190k, be that shipped or sold

1) Huge box office
2) Many more blu-ray players than hddvd players
3) the "complete the trilogy" effect
4) Christmas season

Lastly, although this may not play a huge role, we all know this will have the same stunning PQ/SQ as the other two, and that alone is reason enough to buy it for a lot of people.

This is mostly the case for me...I want that PQ...I need that PQ.

Right, which puts 300 BD at about 260K. Not an impossible hurdle for Transformers, but it does have the advantage of not being R, and there being a lot more players in the market now than when 300 was released. 400K total high def sales would be hard to beat, so Warner will still keep that crown, unless Spiderman 3 or POTC3 can outdo that.

Would be fantastic if sony paid Nielson for a special report, then gave it to HMM to put it in print for transformers week. Why? To show the REAL number of Transformers sold, which i am sure is a far cry from 190k issued in the press release.

I love bluray and want it to win as much as anybody, but why do we have any reason to truly believe that the 190K was made up? Honestly, do we have any reason to believe that HD-DVD wont win this week by 20:80?

I have a feeling that bluray people are going to be severely disappointed tommorrow when Nielsen reports those numbers as being accurate.

Between my local frys, circuit city and best buy, there are still HUNDREDS of copies of Transformers HD DVD in stock everywhere. It sold VERY poorly. Asking the guy that re-stocks the HD movies at Frys, he said it sold very badly and just the DVD is doing well. There is no reason to believe the 190k is true, not the other way around.

not 1 copy of the hd dvd version sold in my college town. and back in stl there were numerous copies of it at most stores. it def. didn't sell more than 1-3 copies at a given store. i have a feeling the tformers numbers are piss poor and we are going to see that tommorow, then paramount is going to have some explaining to do about there so called 190k. they are going to be the laughing stock of hollywood. i do hope when they come back to blu-ray, the bda looks at them and says, its a 150 million dollar entrance fee into the bda.

Isn't it odd that they sold one title, and a title appealing mostly to kids, to between 1/3 and 1/2 of all HD DVD player owners?

Isn't it odd that they claimed 100,000 the first day? Even if you included Amazon and other preorders?

Isn't it odd that no other HD DVD title came even close to that kind of performance?

It's been reported the press release went out Monday- the day before sales began- if true, isn't that a bit odd also?

It might be accurate. And HD DVD might win the week- but not by 20:80. And there might be huge returns of the title, unopened, after the tally is completed.

The numbers came out the Monday after it went on sale. Go back to last week of July(first week of Aug?) and WB released the 300 numbers early too. I think WB did it the Tuesday before the numbers were released.

Does anyone know if the sales week Nielson measures is Tues - Mon or Sunday - Sat?
