---
300 HD-DVD/DVD Combo Pack
Week Ending 8/5/07 = 56,191 Units (First Week sales as reported in VideoScan First Alert)
---
300 Blu-ray
Week Ending 8/5/07 = 107,351 Units (First Week sales as reported in VideoScan First Alert)

The article by the way is titled "Blu-ray/HD DVD: Which Hollywood Studio Is Accused Of 'Big Ass, Fat, Stupid Lie'?"

Check it out...

Now that you mention it, I did see an article stating how many copies of 300 sold the first week and I thought, that was somewhat lower than what Warner had said. No wonder there were so many copies of Transformers Everywhere I looked. When I went to Best Buy to pick up Meet the Robinsons, there had to be at least 100 copies still sitting on the shelves.

Thanks Grubert. Actually, I was thinking about this today while I was driving and I realized I was just lucky. 51:49 means anything between 51.4999:48.5000 (~3) and 50.5000:49.4999 (~1). That's a factor of 3 in margin of error!

So, it could very easily have been you that was right. I just won one round of crapshoot by pure luck.

So he doesn't know math well does he. 51:49 is a 2% margin. I could go through it, but I don't think I need to.

Hehe. See above, 51:49 could be something like 1.000001% to 2.999999%.

Not that it matters.

By the way, has any DUD fanboy pull out the "YTD moved by 1%, we're getting closer woohoo!" spin?

Sorry, don't read other sites much anymore....

One question: Is winning week ending 10/28/2007 not the greater challenge? Transformers still in good sales position, with the BOGOs flatted out and no blu exclusives up in the charts. How big is the danger that the real blow we get is week 2?

The way I look at is it that one production company switched sides, released one movie (and it's not even some amazing movie that'll be remembered for decades or anything) and gave us the worst week ever, just one percent away form a tie.

If that's how fragile our position at the top of this two-man race is I'm not happy. Don't get me wrong... wish I could be, and I respect those of you who are happy to hear 51%, some of us just weren't born with the optimist gene, that's all.
you're looking at it backwards...

Do you not understand the masses? It doesn't matter if the movie will be remembered one year from now...the people liked this movie and they want it in high def. There was a big demand for this movie so it was a very dangerous week for BD, but they actually came out ahead and avoided any kind of negative spin. A lot of people were looking for this title to be their savior so their sales were high...you can't be disappointed with a win no matter how small. Anyone who isn't happy with 51:49 is crazy in my opinion. A win is a win and this is a HUGE win.

I think he means that Blu won by 1%, which is true, because 1% less would have meant a draw

It is a two stroke victory. At 1% less they would still have to gain another 1% in order to tie.

Actually, you don't know this. A common practice with competing percentages is to always round down the higher number, which would mean these results are between 51 and 51.999999 for Blu.

The main reason they do this is to prevent 99.5 from rounding up to 100.

If Paramount and HD-DVD fans are gloating over the 115,000 sales (if that) of Transformers, here's the real numbers. Just for the heck of it.

The numbers in the BD table initially doesn't tally with the main table because of rounding errors in calculation, based on the POTC numbers (10,981) obtained from the main chart. I corrected it based on the main chart.

The numbers in the HD-DVD is caused by Excell code errors by me; originally the numbers were lower.

Besides Transformers, the #2-5 of HD-DVD's Top 5 sold 9,707 copies.

BD's #2-5 sales generate 26,819 copies. However, there are four BD titles in the Top 5 that are Disney titles. EVEN IF we discounted and halved the numbers for those four BDs because of BOGO, that still means BD's #2-5 sold 21,046 copies => The BOGO calculations numbers - 10,488 (POTC:COTBP) + 6,291 (FF) + 4,267 (Deja Vu).

Basically, without Transformers HD-DVD would be outnumbered by 2:1 yet again.

Umm, that would be pretty hilarious if numbers 2-5 of HD-DVD were only in the low 200's, but as Max mentioned, there must be one more decimal place. Even so, it just shows how weak HD-DVD is in catalog titles, and anything that sells beyond the week of release.

Two recent major new releases (Knocked Up and Evan Almighty) for HD DVD are only about 1/2 of 300 sales on BD (out 10+ weeks). No legs at all. That can't make Universal too happy.

Please edit your previous post to remove the old pic. Thanks. I wasn't getting my cells coded right.

I updated the post with a new pic and more analysis. Jumped the gun there a bit. I'm not that good at Excel, ya know.

Nope, the first week included all the pre-orders that were placed prior to the release date but not counted until the release week. No such "backlog" exists to prop up second week numbers.

If not for the BOGOs it would have been 60-40 HD DVD if not even more lopsided. The BDA made a fantastic tactical decision to ensure victory, but we shouldn't dismiss Transformers' numbers too easily. This week proved that the BDA can outmaneuver HD DVD at will, but TF did sell a record number of HD DVDs.
