actually the difference in the number of available titles is not very big, only about a dozen by the end of the year.
Look at the international market, you will see that the vast majority is BD. It is not the titles or better titles, it is the format. The better titles helps cause we have the studio support, but we have their support cause the format is better.
I think we should celebrate outselling them every week. Attach rate means nothing and has already been addressed by BDA as misinformation.
If you think the individual titles are only outselling by a little bit, I think not. The transformers numbers were also questionable and doubtful. The Spidey movie is the 3rd and not a popular as the first, with the higher priced box set, sold more than transformers was likely to have sold.
The only real thing HD-DVD has going for it is the fact that their players are cheap cheap cheap.

I like that idea.
BDA should counter the A2 with a firesale of our own. Get rid of some of the 1.0 players to replace them with a 1.1 player. If they can get the BD 1.0 players down to $200, then they would sell easily and still play at better quality than the A2 and A3. The only difference is it wouldn't play some of the extras on some of the discs. Discs that aren't even out yet.

I would not think that The Aviator would sell well at all. I remember trying to trade-in the DVD a year ago and Wherehouse wouldn't even take it because they were so overstocked with used copies of it. I couldn't even get a buck. That tells me that lots of people didn't care for it and ditched their copies. Personally, I liked the film and thought DiCaprio was excellent in the role, although I did find myself washing my hands an awful lot for a week or so afterwards.

I certainly agree. But what I was trying to say was that these sorts of numbers make it clear that being neutral is generally wasteful. This wasn't a big title, obviously; but by producing two versions, their overall sales weren't good, even combined. I just think a title like this (and Omega Man coming up) are going to be the kind that make them realize even more that being neutral isn't a good deal, regardless of which exclusive direction they feel more obligated, or inclined, to go.

Actually I don't think this matters at all...

Even if it sold 5,000 copies on Blu-ray and only 1,000 on HD-DVD then it's highly unlikly that anybody at Warner will draw any conclusions since the numbers are so low.

Warners decision will be based on an overall evaluation of the whole market situation.

hd dvd has about 44 and we have about 62 (i started counting the week of the 13th). thats about about 40% more movies being released on our format. im just saying that when you compare big titles and neutral titles, i don't think we are outselling them 2:1 anymore. our 2:1 power comes from our extra releases. but you make a very good point about international releases and surely this will have quite a bit of effect on studios. americans forget that there is a world outside the USA.

i think everyone needs to pay a little less attention to the weekly numbers for the remainder of the year and evaluate after the holidays. at this point christmas shopping and gift giving is going to have an effect on sales. i know that i personally am loading up on bds this season through gifts. but they wont be purchased until near the end of the holiday season so while i will be getting several titles like Rat and Close Encounters and Superbad etc, i wont be getting them release week. i think others are probably doing the same considering the amount of great releases coming. the overall 4th quater numbers will be what matter, not week by week breakdowns.

We can only hope.

It's quite clear we'll have to wait a few weeks for the A2 and 40GB PS3 sales to shake out, then see were we are.

all this war is doing is hurting the general public.

Supposing 70K for Ratatouille: 300 Blu-ray (7.70) = 5,390 and HD dVD 3.62 = 2,534. Thus we kept are 2-1 ration and the YTD increased 1%. Not what I was hoping for, but not bad

Did anyone catch the article on page 28 - Cover 3, about the HD DUDs that Wal Mart sold for $99? It says that they only sold 30,000 units, not the 90,000 that was claimed before

You just contradicted yourself.... the reason there can't be 2 formats is because it's hurting the general public... not to mention stopping all of us from getting the movies we want in Hi Def.

Exactly. These weekly sales ratios are amusing but the only numbers that matter to the movie companies (eventually, they are the only ones that can decide the war) are:
  1. Comparison of BD/HD of neutral titles (i.e., Warner)
  2. DVD/high-def ratio for BD and HD
Without Para, there is not much data we can use on 1.

Now, can someone get me the DVD number of Ratatouille for last week?

enjoy

Did the article say they only sold 30k overall or walmart only sold 30k?
