How the hell can dave vaugn have the numbers this early. the price you have to pay for the numbers is very high. where is our person that should have that kind of information. a person apparently can't get in trouble for releasing those numbers early so where is our insiders.

Hard to say, but I think it may be "surprising" in a good way for blu-ray. I remember when the ratio was 55:45 blu-ray, and he was pretty much full of joy. He didn't seem to show any discomfort with announcing the #s early either.
Now he just gives a one liner saying the numbers are surpising. I'm hoping for a move in a big way towards blu-ray's side. If the numbers were to come out 85:15, I'm sure he'd find them to be "surprising". Last edited by L or S of Perfect?; 12-06-2007 at 11:22 AM. |

Neither side released anything worth noting. Blu-Ray's catalog titles sell far better than HD-DVDs do. Therefore, one of these type of weeks it WILL happen that Blu has all top 10, unless we have a dramatic turnaround. It is lunacy to have this firm belief that it *can't* happen. Blu has had 9 out of 10 with no notable releases before...10/10 isn't that big of a stretch from there. As a matter of fact, 10/10 Blu would be JUST the kind of thing that David Vaughn would find "Surprising". Note: I'm not saying it did happen. Saying it' *can't* happen is just stupid. Yes, he didnt elaborate if it was positive or negative for either format, just that the numbers were surprising. For HD-DVD supporters who thought the firesale on HD-DVD players would bring their software sales closer to Blu-ray, I guess it would seem surprising if the marketshare plunged instead.
But it's hard to say, guess we wont know for sure until tomorrow or Monday ![]() |

I haven't been keeping up with the week releases.
Can I have a basic runthrough of the big sales available for the week, each sides new releases, and possible big residuals? |

Blu: Omega Man Paprika I Know Who Killed Me Red: Old School Anchorman Mr. Bean's Holiday Omega Man Hot Rod Or were you asking about what released *this* Tuesday for next Friday's Nielsen's? -Greg P.S. Residuals for Blu are things like Rat, Cars, Spidey3 and box set, Ocean's 13 and Ocean's Box set, Hairspray and, of course, Live Free or Die Hard and the Die Hard box set. And there were BOGOs and B2G1s. For Red it's primarily Shrek3 and Transformers (would someone kill those infernal machines!) and Ocean's 13 and box. There were lots of free titles if you bought a player. Some counted. Last edited by GregBlu5; 12-06-2007 at 12:06 PM. |

I was talking about last week's sales (for this week's number). Thanks a lot. Based on that's it's really hard to say. |

Weird thing for next week... I know Amazon numbers don't mean a whole lot, but High School Musical 2 is #6 for the DVD version but #1239 for the Blu-ray version! That's a fairly terrible ranking for something coming out in a week isn't it?

The rankings really don't mean much. HSM2 will sell but more so to general audiences who don't buy online. Hell, I buy most everything online but I've been getting BDs at Best Buy for the last couple of months. And HSM2 will be on my pick-up list next week along with all the Potters.
Yet even when I would buy online for my BD releases, I almost never bought at amazon. It's a data point, an interesting one, but one that continues to not really reflect the overall scope of things. |

My DUD co-worker passed on Shrek 3 in HD as it wasn't a combo and would have only worked in his HT and not the kids' room or car. He did buy the SD Shrek 3. Could be why Ratatoullie also sold fewer BD than expected.

With nothing special on Blu this week (despite the excellent Paprika), I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of HD DVD fans were expecting "big" catalogue releases like Anchorman, Hot Rod, Old School and Mr Bean's Holiday to win the week or come very close.
Now when we hear that PE HD DVD came up on top of their sales .. that could spell a very nasty surprise for them. Could also be a bad one on the Blu Ray side I guess (doubtful that it'd be a victory for HD DVD), something in the 50's for Blu Ray and the 40's for HD DVD. I just don't see that happening though. We'll see. Last edited by Elandyll; 12-06-2007 at 02:52 PM. |

There's been a lot of weeks that proved conclusively that amazon rankings for the same week that matches the nielsen rankings have very little correlation.
DH4 week is a complete opposite of what amazon was showing. --- This week, with DH4 #1 on BD, PE #1 on HD, there's really only two possibilities for HD : a. P.E. suddenly picked up a lot of sales to outsell TF and Shrek3 OR b. TF and Shrek3 tanked so badly that they didn't even sell 10k. I think a. is more plausible. As for the reason for why PE would pick up sales and not TF, that would be a puzzle wouldn't it? Note that P.E. was really selling in the sub 2000 units for a long time, so being #1 in the red case is something extremely surprising. (there has to be a logical reason for this). It's generally believed that 2nd week sales should be 1/2 to 1/4 of week1 for the blockbusters like DH4. |

This means that Hot Rod, Mr. Bean, Anchorman, Old School combine did less than 40k, so with PE and the 4 comedies they did a total of about 50k, the rest of the catalog bumps them up to around 80k. you can bet that ratatouille, die hard 4, and spidey all did at least 20k in residuals, thats 60k right there, then you have other new releases like hairspray, rescue dawn, badder santa, SC3, pirates 1 and 2, 300, etc. that got it up to the hd dvd number. then its just the rest of the catalog, plus the new releases for the week to push it above hd dvd for the week. |
