You know what 61/39 is in politics? It's a freakin' LANDSLIDE. A candidate that winse 61/39 has a MANDATE. His opponents cow to his will, because the people have spoken!

This was a week when DUD released the #2 title of the year. This is a week when the largest franchise in the HISTORY OF FILM saw its first release on HDM. This was a week DUD had to win to secure any chance at relevance, and EVERY DUD OWNER KNEW THIS. They put forth a concerted effort to win this week. And they failed. Miserably. They couldn't even get within 20 points.

This week was the defining moment of the format war. Blu faced DUD's best assault, and prevailed. Now we know every week from now until 10 years from now will be Blu. Not only in the USA, but everywhere in the world. It has been decided. The best format won. Let's celebrate!

That's another thing to take into consideration. I've held off on quite a few purchases. On top of this people are dealing with holiday budgets. I would have bought a lot more in the way of BDs this month if I didn't have a large list of people to get presents for. Post holidays, people will start to have money again and the BDs will disappear from the shelves at an even fater rate.

No matter how it is spun, bent, folded, or mutilated, this is a spectacular week for BD.

That's when buyers who have held off on some BR movies (to allow for presents -- I had to do this) and new owners come in. That should be an important few weeks, arguably just as important as the weeks prior to Christmas.

Just an off topic question here...what is this "largest franchise" that you speak of?

Way to go fellow BD supporters! We trounced 'em again on a week they thought was in the bag.

BD undefeated so far for 2007 and the PS3 is now 1.1 Profile..... Sweet!!!!!

With the heavily diffused Potter dollar, record volume sales, and 14 BD titles out of the top 20 on HDM---I guess I'm a little disappointed at 1.2:1 for Order of the Phoenix, if unsurprised (given <phlegm>BD's lower attach rate</phlegm> and broader selection of titles).

But the Potter films will have long legs, BD typically wins out on residuals by significant margins, and 1.2:1 won't hold up beyond next week.

I know catalog titles don't sell as well as new releases, but with so many Potter SKUs and record volume sales would it be surprising to see the franchise make multiple entries in the top 20? How likely is it that 1.2:1 holds up for the Potter franchise as a whole, even for this week?

The sweep continues...

For Christmas this week I purchased:

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Spiderman Trilogy
300

That should have added a little fuel to the fire. There's a lot of WB there.

61:39 is fan-frickin-tastic, but only 1.2:1 on OotP? That's very odd.

The Departed had been selling around 1.65:1 on average up until November (after that I stopped keeping track). 300 has been selling 2:1 the entire time, and jumped up to 2.3:1 once Toshiba started including it as a pack-in.

Considering the fact that Ocean's 13 sold 1.66:1 in favor of Blu during Black Friday week (showing that all those new HD standalones weren't making any difference), I would've expected HP to sell just as well on Blu if not better, since people like me (gamers, and people that grew up with Harry) would be more likely to purchase HP than the average HD DVD owner (imo). It really is strange that HP only sold 1.2 in favor of Blu. Are all those new HD DVD owners finally buying movies?

I hope the ratios improve from here on out, because 1.6 down to 1.2 shows a trend heading in a really bad direction. If it was another nature documentary, I wouldn't be too worried, but HP?

I wonder how Blade Runner will do. The sooner we get Warner, the sooner all this ends.

why distance themselves at this point in the most crucial time of the format war?
Maybe the checks from Toshiba bounced.

Have people around here seriously thought about what theyre saying?

"A lot of people held off on Bourne due to a bogo next week"

How many people do you honestly think were aware that there would be a bogo this week?

Seriously, the majority of HD owners are NOT reading these forums and websites and would have NO IDEA that Best Buy was doing a BOGO until Sunday when the ad actually goes into circulation. That claim is absolutely silly.

Ive read some dumb things around here from fanatics of both sides, but that has to be one of the dumbest things Ive read.

I do consider 1.2:1 for that one to be kind of a win for HD DVD, but with the 61:39 for the week I can't really say HD DVD did better for the week, since the 1.2:1 is a nice improvement over previous performances, but the overall looks bad after all the wait-for-Q4 stuff and them having the better releases overall for the week as far as what should drive sales (some people probably like Lost better, but Bourne Ultimatum should sell more).

One thing to consider when comparing to 300 though is that Warner had a $5 premium for the combo disc with the DVD side included with the HD DVD. Compared to that one it looks like Warner decided to make both HP5s the same price, but still include the DVD side for HD DVD. But they didn't drop the HD DVD $5 compared to 300. They only dropped it $4 and then raised the BD $1. At least compared to 300.

The BOGO on Bourne didn't start the next week. It started Sunday, so should have been included. If people were waiting for the BOGO at Best Buy, then I would expect a lot of those to go in Sunday to try to make sure it wouldn't be sold out. And as far as that BOGO, the HD DVD side had the advantage there, since they had 2 blockbuster day-and-date hits that were just 5 days old included in the BOGO, where Blu-ray only had one.

Are there that many dual format owners that could make that much of a difference?

Not really, or the ratio wouldn't be 61:39 on their big exclusive + 1st BOGO week.

Some of those $100 players are under Christmas trees. Others are in 2nd rooms in houses that were already red. Quite a few are with those like me who rent some red exclusives and only buy blue. Let's hope Warner has the wisdom to end this war.
