I think as many people are still uninformed many Blu-ray fans will get HD DVD as presents and there will be many returns

I have my copy of BR (shipped from the WB store last week), but with the shortages of BR at the stores, I'm not sure what kind of ratio we're going to get with that title. That being said, I expect "The Simpsons", T3, and residuals to push us to a much bigger ratio next week... I'm thinking around 70/30... but I guess we'll see...

I don't believe Blu gets to 61:39 or 1.56:1 with just 1.2:1 on all the HP SKUs. Something is amiss with DV's detail numbers. Max mentioned that HP on Blu was leading red 1.7 to one across all SKUs on Monday.

Further, it is not known to what extent WB skewed the numbers with the packaging problems.

Anyway, the other format got trounced 61:39 during Bourne week and that is just beyond great. All I can say is job well done. I bought all 5 HP titles individually plus HSM2 and caused smoke from the black strip on the back of my credit card to set off the detectors.

It's a great win!

That was definitely my case. Once I heard about that I decided to hold off until all of the right discs were there. I posted here pretty much right away that after I heard that I was going to hold off.

If anyone who supports HD DVD truly thinks PE is selling like hotcakes because of legitimacy they are delussional. PE is selling amazingly because of Oprah and ill informed soccer moms. End of story.

I am so excited right now for the future of BD.
Say 20% of the last few weeks sales of PE get returned the week after Christmas, is it possible to have a negative Neilsen rating for a title? It would be hillarious to see HD DVD lose the week 80-20 and see PE with a -30% beside it.

likewise, the true buyers (and the true future of HDM) are/will be the families, which by definition are more leery of blowing money that could be spent on the kids' education/feeding/whatever on a situation where the format war is still ongoing - assuming they even care/know that the format war is ongoing. again, they've got bigger things to worry about in general.

still, once that demographic really starts making the jump, that's where they disney factor will kick in once and for all.
Agreed, families are major section of movie collectors as Disney movies collectively tend to sell more than their box office numbers.

And one thing remains unchanged for the history books. In the climax of the first format war of the 21st century, 2007 will see a solid wall of blue where blu-ray disks outsold hd dvd disks for all of 2007. This in spite of the betrayal by Viacom, looks like an impressive achievement.

Another factor is that DV reported that this week saw record volumes. The ratios of the top10 will be interesting to see. BladeRunner is the first serious attempt at gauging catalog interest, since this title had a major facelift. I'm hoping it does well as it is on my list and is one of my favorite movies, but it is a dated material and lacks the mindless violence that now dominates the top of the charts.

In Oct 21, only two movies crossed 100k (300, CR). Today, in December, we have at least 5! (300, CR, DH4, Spidey3, PotC3) (more likely 7 by my estimates of unknown units). As expected, the titles in the top 20 HDM sales chart had been rewritten completely. If rough guesses are accurate, BD went from 1M/9months to 1M/3 months to now 1M/month --- that's a show of strength.

Wow! I'm really impressed. Bourne was a MAJOR release. I really thought HD-DVD had a chance to make it much closer. I'm not so down about Potter. I don't think it was as heavily advertised as Bourne, and Blu-ray has a lot of titles to choose from now. Looks like HD-DVD won't win a week this year. Simpsons will close out the year nicely.

It's time for Warner to end this thing.

As stated Vaughn's insider sources were way off on POTC last week.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the "1.2:1" was creative rounding on their part...keeping in mind that he believes Paramount's Transformers numbers.

I know what you are saying, but the fact that Bourne (my favorite movie of 2007) did not come close ro selling 100K copies is an embarassment for HD DVD supporters. The best action movie of the year in my opinion. 61-39 is an AWESOME result for us. Props to all!

Bourne wins handily and they only muster 61:39? I mean they had 2 Blockbusters, 1 exclusive.....and they couldnt even do better than 1.56:1. They had their long looked forward to BOGO on amazon, they had 3 free movies with any player on amazon, they had bourne, they had the bourne box set, they had harry potter.....and STILL not even 1.5:1.

If ANYONE feels wary about this they are an IDIOT, im sorry, nothing personal to any "realists" but lets put this into perspective. This is absolutely tremendous for BD, no way to dance around it. As other have said HP will be inflated, you have confusion of brand name to go along with the last xmas hurrah for HD DVD owners, and slim pickings on key titles......HP was one of the big guns for HD DVD, for BD it was just another great movie. Pirates sellinf 2:3 with Bourne is SPECIAL. Folks we are seeing this victory as we speak/type/read. A title in its second week, a family light heartedly title in its second week selling 40:60 with a day and date action blockbuster starring matt damon. I mean seriously, this is spectacular.

Great work BD, awesome!
Very well said. 61-39 is better than most (including myself) had anticipated. I was dreaming of 60-40, so this is even better. Great sales for POTC 3, I love it

How many people do you honestly think were aware that there would be a bogo this week?

Seriously, the majority of HD owners are NOT reading these forums and websites and would have NO IDEA that Best Buy was doing a BOGO until Sunday when the ad actually goes into circulation. That claim is absolutely silly.

Ive read some dumb things around here from fanatics of both sides, but that has to be one of the dumbest things Ive read.
I want to apologiza to you sir. I kinda made a rude comment the other day. However, I was checking out the AVS prediction thread yesturday (I almost never go there), and you take a lot of heat from the HD DVD supporters. Great job on your side though, it is appreciated.

61:39 is a MONSTER win for Blu last week! We kept up the usual sales ratio DESPITE the fact they had their big blockbuster release and a large BOGO. They got their asses hand to them, and will continue to. The Warner titles will outpace HD-DVD week after week, by years end, the ratio will be closer to 1.7 or 1.8 to 1, you can count on it. WB has already made their decision, I am sure, they will be Blu next year.

...and, I think that Red is actually LOSING steam, there are a lot of people starting to see the writing on the wall and jumping onto the Blu side.

Yay, I finally nailed one in the weekly prediction contest.

I think the Potter ratio will improve over the next few weeks. As many have pointed out, on the Blu side there are more good titles right now competing for our dollars.

It is true.

"300"

Week 1 - 1.91:1
Week 2 - 2.47:1
Week 3 - 2.22:1

I think a lot of BD buyers took advantage of the 25% coupon for Harry Potter from WHV.
I wonder if their numbers are not counted in the NIelsen's.

On Potter lets not forget, the box-sets count as one. I am willing to bet we sold more box-sets than HD-DVD. I bet Warner knows the ratio is bigger when all the box-sets are counted.
