The only week that HD DVD even has a slight chance of doing as well as they did this week is October 16th (Transformers week) - other than that they are toast.

Take a look at November 6th - can you say 95/5 split?
Which is why they bought out Paramount. I've been telling people the writing was on the wall.....Toshiba new it. Although Universal has big titles (Evan Almighty, Knocked Up, Bourn 3), there is only one that would generate any buzz (which was Bourne 3). That title is destined to release in Dec right after Pirates so it's a good bet it will be overshadowed. It was either buy Paramount out or get out before you are laughed out of the war.

Transformers is their only hope in my opinion. It's do or die. They need to have a $199 player out with the release of Transformers to make any impact. I get this feeling their big Transformers movie is going to fall flat on sales (highdef sales) because this movie has to go up against various Boxoffice movies like Fantastic 4 2, 28 Weeks Later, Surfs Up, Meet The Robinsons, Mr Brooks, Hostel 2, Invisible, Reign Over Me, and of course Spider-Man 3 all by itself. Not to mention some really good cataloge titles. If it wasn't for Paramount going exclusive to HD they would only have ONE boxoffice title in the month of Oct......Warners The Reaping (which BR gets as well).

I hope Transformers fails so the war can end early.

Looks like Paramount finally got the memo from Toshiba. How many times have they changed their story?

I call forth the Anti-BS bat.

I will be curious to see the Transformer DVD Sales #'s vs the HD-DVD sales #'s.

My family liked Transformers enough that we will get the DVD and let the PS3 work its magic.

The whole time watching that Movie I thought to myself that it will be great on Blu-ray, guess I will just have to watch the upscaled DVD.

Makes me wonder if the HD DVD PR group isn't pleading with WB's to hold off on releasing Batman Begins, V for Vendetta and The Matrix until next year. Take Bd's stellar releases and now add these three to the mix!

That line from Bill Paxton in Aliens keeps popping into my head "that's it, game over man"

Blades of Glory HD DVD = 92.69

Overall
300 BD/HD DVD = 100
Heroes HD DVD = 62.62
BoG HD DVD = 58.92

Both out sold by a 4-5 week old title.
Paramount must be wondering about this result, being beaten by a 4 week old title...oh wait, they are still counting the Toshiba dollar bills.

HD DVD did better than I thought they would.

I guess their last hope for '07 is Oct. 16 with the Transformers release.

This has to be the spin of the day

From AVS of course:

Obvisously the Amazon 3 for 2 sale was an attempt to sell slow moving product. Weren't there only 60 qualifying HD DVD titles, but over a 100 BD titles (or something to the ratio)? And doesn't BD have about 46 more titles than HD DVD? It would seem to indicate that just having more titles on the market is where the BD boost comes from, not that low ranking catalog titles are outselling similar HD DVD titles, because of new player sales. 46 more titles at a couple hundred discs per week is almost 10k more disc sales for BD. Equalize for the number of titles and you get a ratio close to 50:50 instead of 56:44.

FACT: A five week old title on BD (300) that has already sold extremely well has outsold each of the two new release exclusives on HD DVD (Heroes and Blades of Glory).

HD DVD is a joke, plain and simple.

The Paramount/Dreamworks has just started to have an effect on these sales ratios. They won't settle down for a few weeks yet.

You have the already in place BD players vs. the "shiny new studio support". It remains to be seen if the "news" caused a knee jerk spike in sales for HD DVD, or if it will see steady growth.

Come 4Q, when we see the actual titles on the shelves, I'm willing to bet the BD side will gain back a lot of momentum it may have lost between the "news" and, say, the end of Sept. How much remains to be seen.

I'm still PO'd at Viacom for prolonging our inevitable victory.

That reason is called "DVD". The release dates are dictated by DVD for day and date releases. They probably thought that spot looks soft.

What I don't understand is why Shrek 3 is scheduled for Nov/13th. That's the week the Oceans 13/trilogy are released, as well as being only one week after the rat movie. That looks like some major competition there. Maybe they thought kids who love the green ogre won't care about cooking rats?

Yes, inventing excuses for the shift at this time completely destroys their credibility. Any genuine reason would have been given at the time of the original announcement. This backs up our view that they were simply bought and are now desperately searching around for some excuses for their actions.

I wish we had actual sales volumes. Then we can keep a running total of how much Para lost by not releasing on BD (assuming a 2:1 ratio or something).

This is no surprise to me. HD-DUD sucks, it always has sucked and will continue to suck.

In a few weeks, DUD will be wishing it was never invented.

I find it quite funny that a neutral Warner title, 4 weeks old at that, beat out the big new releases from each of the two HD-DVD exclusive studios. I guess that's it, Blu-ray is going to outsell them every week this year the only question now is by how much?
