The charts on Page 10 of the Home Media Magazine attached above in this thread are very ugly for HD-DVD. First off, there is only 1 HD-DVD title in the Top 10 - PE, and the blu-ray version is also Top 10. Now look at the Aggregate By Title chart (for example they are listing total sales of PE on both formats along with various exclsuives titles or whatever... just total sales by titles) and see that there are no HD-DVD exclusives in the Top 10 at all. There are 4 dual-format titles and 6 BD exclusives... yikes!

Bottom line - of the Top 10 HD titles, blu-ray is getting a cut of ALL 10 and 6 are exclusive. HD-DVD is only partially touching 4 of them. That's painful.

I like seeing the sales indexes for each sole format. If you look at the #5 blu-ray title (Blood Diamond), it's index is 74.95. The #2 HD DVD title is Norbit at 46.41. That's just sad if you're a HD DVD supporter, especially factoring in that PE HD DVD's index compared to Apocalypto is 82.27.

Norbit's sales shows a preference for Blu-ray. It's indexes are:
BD - 77.78
HD - 38.35 (take 82.27, PE HD DVD's index, and multiply by 0.4661, Norbit HD DVD's index as a percentage)

Please correct me if that is not accurate. If it is, look at this:
38.35 x 2 = 76.70
If all that is correct, then Norbit BD outsold its HD DVD counterpart by more than a 2:1 ratio. This would hint that the fire sale isn't doing too much. I know Norbit might not be the best title for this comparison, but it did pretty well at the box office.

Letters from Iwo Jima's index also shows two things: Preference for Blu-ray and the staying power of demand for Blu-ray over HD DVD.

Once again, correct me if those numbers are wrongly calculated.

Great point. I just want to see 85-90% with Fox fully on board and WB finally releasing their good movies on Blu-ray--Batman Begins, V for Vendetta, Harry Potter, etc. If we get this, ah man, it'll be a slaughter...not that it really isn't already though.

And with Toshiba bragging about having more HD players, you would think that HD DVD should have the stronger "staying power".

imagine how bad it would look if all the people who incorrectly purchased PE on HD DVD had been better informed?...

ignorance is their saving grace..

Something else to note: Go to the back of this HMM issue, and there is a special section for HD media. On page 17 of that section they have the units sold for the top 20 titles on each format. Here's the tops for each:

Format Title # sold Release date
BD - Casino Royale 83,600 03/13/2007
HD - Batman Begins 53,500 10/10/2006

Batman Begins had a 5-month head start on Casino Royale, and has only sold 64% of what Casino Royale has. It could be argued that this isn't the best comparison, as BB will be on BD, and CR is a true BD exclusive. So the highest-selling HD DVD true exclusive is Serenity, at 26,200, released on 4/18/2006.

Those are the dry numbers. HD DVD, read 'em 'n weep.

Wow. Total domination in that list.

I'm starting to agree with those that say Warner going BD exclusive would kill HD DVD faster than Universal going neutral.

There is only one Universal title in the top 30.

I like the Disney ad too. They make a not so subtle dig at HD-DVD with their "Better Than Perfect" line. That's awesome.

I want to see what kind of numbers Blood Diamond did, if releasing it a month early makes the BD sales eclipse HD, Warner might take that as a sign, assuming their purpose was in gauging just that.

BTW, saw a diet Pepsi commercial the other day. Seemed humorously allegorical to the high def format war. Almost subliminal. They even got the colors right.
