Marin County Indoor retail and outdoor worship to reopen on the 15th. Hair salons and indoor dining might reopen by the end of the month. Being really cautious given the modest caseload.

Got a bad haircut from my wife last night. Better than leaving it long I guess.

Haha I already have one coworker who had their wife do the cut and it didn't go so well so he buzzed it all off.

My hair is a god damn mess right now haha, if I open the window of my car and drive like that, I end up getting wings on my side haha. Damn I need a barber shop right now in the worst way.

Not sure if it's due to increased testing, or some sort of backlog, but Sweden is reporting their highest number of cases to date by a huge margin. Previous high was in April at 812 cases. Today it's 2,214 cases. We'll have to see if there's any trend to this over the next week or so. I'm looking for their testing data but haven't found it yet. I did see an article that said they're ramping up testing, so perhaps this could be a result of that.

And since I brought up Sweden, I might as well post the latest news:

Quote:
Sweden's top epidemiologist has admitted his strategy to fight COVID-19 resulted in too many deaths, after persuading his country to avoid a strict lockdown.

"If we were to encounter the same illness with the same knowledge that we have today, I think our response would land somewhere in between what Sweden did and what the rest of the world has done," Anders Tegnell said in an interview with Swedish Radio.

Tegnell is the brains behind Sweden's controversial approach to fighting the virus, and the government of Stefan Lofven has deferred to the epidemiologist in its official response to the pandemic. Gatherings of more than 50 people continue to be banned, but throughout the crisis Swedes have been able to visit restaurants, go shopping, attend gyms and send children under 16 to school.

The laxer approach to containing the virus has drawn both praise and indignation from across the globe. What is beyond debate, however, is the effect the strategy has had on the country's death toll.

At 43 deaths per 100,000, Sweden's death rate is among the highest globally and far exceeds that of neighbouring Denmark and Norway, which imposed much tougher lockdowns at the outset of the pandemic.

Now, Tegnell has for the first time admitted publicly that the strategy is resulting in too many deaths.

"Clearly, there is potential for improvement in what we have done in Sweden," he said.

Until now, Tegnell had argued that the long-term nature of the COVID-19 pandemic required a more sustainable response than severe and sudden lockdowns. Despite criticism from abroad, Tegnell's strategy enjoyed widespread support in Sweden.

But with many other European Union countries now rolling back their lockdowns after appearing to bring COVID-19 under control, there are signs that Sweden may be left behind. That includes the freedom of movement of its citizens, as some EU countries restrict access to people coming from what are deemed high-risk zones.

What's more, there's so far limited evidence that Sweden's decision to leave much of its society open will support the economy. Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson recently warned that Sweden is facing its worst economic crisis since World War II, with GDP set to slump 7 per cent in 2020, roughly as much as the rest of the EU.

I saw a flyer that someone taped to a lamppost near my home for Barber services by appointment. My hair was unmanageable by that point so I decided to take a chance and go for it. He was an out-of-work local guy who set up a barber chair in his son's bedroom and was charging $35. I was a bit uneasy about it but it turned out great and I walked away looking and feeling brand new.

Salons and patio seating at restaurants opened up on 6/1. Haircuts were booked solid all day Monday. But was able to score a slot yesterday using my Great Clips app. About a 3.5 hour wait. Kept checking my app and at about the 5 minute mark I checked in (masks required). It was like shearing a sheep. Freshly groomed I met me mates at the pub for patio beers. Salud.

I could never enjoy the taste of beer. Tried it once and it did nothing for me.

Pretty alarming turn of events with regards to the data from several hydroxychloroquine studies. . Some excerpts below. This is in no way meant to be political discussion, please do not bring politics into this.

Quote:
The World Health Organization and a number of national governments have changed their Covid-19 policies and treatments on the basis of flawed data from a little-known US healthcare analytics company, also calling into question the integrity of key studies published in some of the world’s most prestigious medical journals.

A Guardian investigation can reveal the US-based company Surgisphere, whose handful of employees appear to include a science fiction writer and an adult-content model, has provided data for multiple studies on Covid-19 co-authored by its chief executive, but has so far failed to adequately explain its data or methodology.

Data it claims to have legitimately obtained from more than a thousand hospitals worldwide formed the basis of scientific articles that have led to changes in Covid-19 treatment policies in Latin American countries. It was also behind a decision by the WHO and research institutes around the world to halt trials of the controversial drug hydroxychloroquine. On Wednesday, the WHO announced those trials would now resume.

Two of the world’s leading medical journals – the Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine – published studies based on Surgisphere data. The studies were co-authored by the firm’s chief executive, Sapan Desai.

At a press conference on Wednesday, the WHO announced it would resume its global trial of hydroxychloroquine, after its data safety monitoring committee found there was no increased risk of death for Covid patients taking it.

Doubts over Lancet study

Questions surrounding Surgisphere have been growing in the medical community for the past few weeks.

On 22 May the Lancet published a blockbuster peer-reviewed study which found the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine, which has been promoted by Donald Trump, was associated with a higher mortality rate in Covid-19 patients and increased heart problems.

Trump, much to the dismay of the scientific community, had publicly touted hydroxychloroquine as a “wonder drug” despite no evidence of its efficacy for treating Covid-19.

The Lancet study, which listed Desai as one of the co-authors, claimed to have analysed Surgisphere data collected from nearly 15,000 patients with Covid-19, admitted to 1,200 hospitals around the world, who received hydroxychloroquine alone or in combination with antibiotics.

The negative findings made global news and prompted the WHO to halt the hydroxychloroquine arm of its global trials.

But only days later Guardian Australia revealed glaring errors in the Australian data included in the study. The study said researchers gained access to data through Surgisphere from five hospitals, recording 600 Australian Covid-19 patients and 73 Australian deaths as of 21 April.

But data from Johns Hopkins University shows only 67 deaths from Covid-19 had been recorded in Australia by 21 April. The number did not rise to 73 until 23 April. Desai said one Asian hospital had accidentally been included in the Australian data, leading to an overestimate of cases there. The Lancet published a small retraction related to the Australian findings after the Guardian’s story, its only amendment to the study so far.

The Guardian has since contacted five hospitals in Melbourne and two in Sydney, whose cooperation would have been essential for the Australian patient numbers in the database to be reached. All denied any role in such a database, and said they had never heard of Surgisphere. Desai did not respond to requests to comment on their statements.

Another study using the Surgisphere database, again co-authored by Desai, found the anti-parasite drug ivermectin reduced death rates in severely ill Covid-19 patients. It was published online in the Social Science Research Network e-library, before peer-review or publication in a medical journal, and prompted the Peruvian government to add ivermectin to its national Covid-19 therapeutic guidelines.

It's not a good idea to trust national health and security to individual businesses and local stores. It would become a free-for-all very quickly. Have we not seen how some store/restaurant/bar owners are "handling" the situation? There needs to be some government assistance to keep things in check and ensure guidelines are being followed. Sadly, they're doing a poor job of that.

You may have just tried a bad beer. My first beers were pretty lousy. Cheapo 40-oz bottles. I can't believe I actually drank beer again after those. But I then realized there are much better beers. Keeping them ice-cold helps a ton. Of course I'm not a fan of all beers. The good thing is there are tons of them and they're definitely not all the same so you can sample some to get an idea if your really dislike beer or just dislike bad beer or certain types. I'm very much not a fan of Budweiser. Never understood it's popularity. I pretty much avoid drinking entirely these days as it doesn't help my stomach anyways, plus my girlfriend doesn't drink. But I'd drink an occasional bottle if I was given one.

This entire COVID-19 situation has been a global demonstration of incompetence at every turn from day 1. Truly baffling and terrifying. It's almost like nobody has any type of plan whatsoever for a situation like this. I understand we're all learning about this together, but what a s**tstorm.

#LancetGate

I mean, that’s crazy.

Dr. Mandeep Mehra, the lead co-author is a director at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, which is credited with funding the study. Dr. Mehra and The Lancet failed to disclose that Brigham Hospital has a partnership with Gilead and is currently conducting TWO trials testing Remdesivir, the prime competitor of hydroxychloroquine for the treatment of COVID-19, the focus of the study.

health insurance costs are getting crazy because of this whole thing. Its looking like rates have increased by between 30% and 100% for all the plans compared to last year.
