We've just passed 50,000 deaths in the US alone, at this rate we'll have passed the Vietnam War death count within the next 7-10 days.

"Fit and healthy people wearing masks could make them more at risk of infection, says expert"

But he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that there is a risk that fit and healthy people could be increasing their chance of infection by wearing a mask that encourages them to touch their face.

“There’s no research evidence to support wearing masks if you are basically fit and well,” said Prof Marshall.

“Indeed if people wear masks there’s a risk they play around with it, they play with their eyes more and maybe you’re even at a higher risk of picking up an infection.

I've been voicing my concerns about this all along. IMO masks should not be a requirement. The ones most of us are wearing have limited effectiveness anyways, and on top of that many don't wear them correctly (under the nose, taking them off to talk). And it means more fiddling with your face if they don't fit well, causes you to sweat, causes fogging if you wear glasses, etc.).

Masks can help, if you or somebody around you has it. But it can lead to increased risks if you are touching door handles, carts, etc., then fiddling with your mask because it doesn't fit good.

This back-and-forth from various experts is confusing everyone.

That’s sad. Only a few short weeks ago someone in this very thread was asserting deaths in the US wouldn't get to anywhere near that figure.

The masks are only as good as the people wearing them. If you can keep your hands away from your face, the mask is a good addition.

If your mask is so ill-fitting that you have to keep adjusting it, then get your mask right or don't wear one at all.

The mask I wear is snug and doesn't move. I made sure of that before I committed to walking out the door with it. Again, once I step outside my home, my hands don't go anywhere near my face until I get back home. No exceptions, even if I wash my hands while out.

Fox 5 Atlanta - Georgia restaurant owner sells car to have enough money to pay her employees

Not sure if this qualifies as "good news" per se, but its amazing how resourceful people can be. Video in link.

Agreed.

The one I wore last week was a nightmare and I was on the verge of panicking in Wal-Mart. It was a dust-style mask and it was way too big, and I could barely see with it fogging up my glasses, plus it was making me so hot I was sweating. It wanted to slip down and I kept fiddling with it with my arm.

My girlfriend's dad gave me one to wear this week he made just for me. It had adjustable straps and I was able to get it to fit much nicer, plus it didn't fog my glasses, and it was much cooler. And it stayed in place. It was thin though so I bet it didn't do much.

You hear stories like this where people are trying their hardest to help others, going so far out of their way to do so, and then you see so many internet comments from people calling it a hoax or who resent having to make sacrifices by simply staying home. Or companies like Gamestop who were trying to weasel their way into staying open as a "necessary" service, putting all their employees at risk. I wish we had more people like that restaurant owner and less people like those running Gamestop.

There really is no back and forth on the mask issue from the experts. By experts I mean the CDC and the WHO. If you don't believe that statement, just stop reading and ignore the rest of my post.

The WHO says if you're healthy, you only need a mask if you're caring for somebody that is sick. That's what it says on their website.

The CDC says wearing a mask can help prevent you from giving the virus to others if you do not know that you are sick because you have no symptoms. In other words, masks are to be worn by sick people. Which means that healthy people don't need to wear a mask.

It is the exact same recommendation. It's just worded very differently.

Sure, but while the WHO says if you're healthy, you only need a mask if you're caring for somebody that is sick, and the CDC is kinda saying the same thing only differently, some mayors and governors are requiring masks to be worn by everyone going into public. In my state it's not an option, it's a requirement if you go into any store. And some stores are enforcing it even if the mayors aren't.

"Cops" in Mexico feel they're entitled to treat people any way they see fit. I have my own horror story from a visit to Cancun in the mid 2000's. You would think people in scrubs would be treated as heroes even in lawless countries

Antibodies developed from receiving plasma (convalescent plasma) from someone who has recovered from COVID are not permanent. They can last from weeks to months. This is known as passive immunity. It's certainly something that can help those that are high risk, and people on the front lines, even if it's a temporary solution until something like a vaccine comes along.

Antibodies that our own body makes if we get the infection, and recover, should last much longer, if not forever. This is known as active immunity.

Interesting that Stockholm and NYC have nearly the same percentage of people with antibodies (20%). If / when this second wave hits, the hardest hit places now will probably be the best off. If it happens in say, November, who knows, these two places may already have achieved herd immunity by then (60% or more of people who had it).

India is beginning to ramp. They are, how do I say this delicately, not set up well for this virus.

Wish I could do an Amazon return of China's "gift to the world"
