It feels like these basic concepts have been explained over and over since week 1.

It's also just insulting and feels so shitty that statistics keep being used to justify more people dying.

I've heard a number of times that covid hasn't really created these problems so much as it's exposed and expanded the weaknesses in our system. And it sucks when people are flailing for eugenics as the answer.

Pretty scary mentality out there by some people within our society. Human lives matter. How many lives are people willing to gamble with? How many lives is the economy worth? How many families need to forever be changed? It breaks my heart that it has come to this. May the Lord forgive us.

Nobody wants to put a dollar sign on lives. However, there are two strains of this potentially fatal disease, it is highly contagious and there is no vaccine. I think we need to re-open the economy but with a lot of restrictions.
No places that promote large gatherings will be opened yet.
Mean but here it is - no one 70 or older or with more than 1 pre-existing condition that could die from CO-VID 19 is to leave the house for anything that is not essential. I see it all the time, old folks and whatnot just doing things probably because they're bored.
We don't want people to die but one of the facts of life is people need activity and money to survive. This pandemic is probably not going away until at least 2021 which is still 7 months away. Sitting in our houses and hoping it goes away won't work and most people aren't doing that anyway because they just don't care.

People, man. Just a general lack of respect for human life. What are we at in this country around 70,000 dead?

In large part (and I've heard back lash on this in this very thread) due to people doing whatever they want.
Going out every day for non-essential reasons.
No social distancing.
Large gatherings because they're not getting fined or arrested.

I think China is way too extreme but we're way too lenient. Find a way to crack down on the morons, let places gradually get back to some semblance of normal and watch the numbers eventually flatten and then start to go down. Hopefully we find a vaccine by the end of the year but the economy unfortunately isn't going to wait till we find one.

Social distancing should not and is not going to go away as they reopen the economy. That mitigating aspect alone is 90% of the overall effectiveness, IMO.

But it looks like just about everywhere there is enough hospital beds and ICUs to reopen partially.

Here in Marin we have had 237 cases (about 1 in 1000 people) and there are zero covid 19 patients in the hospital. And yet, the shutdown has been extended until June.

A little too much caution here at the expense of the economy, particularly small businesses and the working lower and lower middle class.

Service industry going to be a victim of this for years to come. Stuff like concerts, sporting events, large social gatherings in general are about to become a thing of the past for awhile.

I can see most gyms taking a massive hit too since general courtesy, wiping things down and proper distancing are too hard for most gym members to grasp.

Man, you weren't kidding. Worst seltzer I've ever had haha. Mango is more tolerable, but lime is pretty bad too. Awful purchase. Probably should've known better than to buy something with Corona on the label.

I don't agree with underworld54 all the time, or even half the time, but there is the risk of a message board becoming an echo chamber/sounding board if a forum mods out any opposing opinion.

We all need heroes in this day and age.

My hero is the below guy who is giving zero f**ks by wearing a black shirt to his job at a Clorox bleach factory.

No, I'm just really tired of people attacking me. If you think I'm paranoid, fine, I'll accept that. But I'm literally getting attacked in this thread over everything I say. I say, limit going outside for essential purposes only.. I get attacked. I say, wear a mask.... I get attacked. I say, stay six feet away from people, I get attacked!

Seriously, what I say is nothing different that what health experts and our political leaders are trying to say. I don't understand how I'm getting attacked. Now if I were to say, the coronavirus is nothing and it's a harmless virus, now THAT I can understand getting attacked.

It really pissed me off how literally everyone in this thread is in agreement with each other and then I post and chime in and I get ganged up on! It's enough to drive me crazy. It's like, what am I saying that's so damn terrible??!!

The data shows that things would have been much, much, much worse if we hadn't shut down. The reasons things have been leveling off in many areas is because of the shutdown.

Not enough people will social distance n their own. Too many people just don't give a crap. So something drastic had to be done. Again, hospitals were being overwhelmed. Something had to be done.

I was in the grocery store today (with my mask on) and a guy came up behind me in line practically on top of me, while me and the couple in front of me were doing our best to keep a good distance apart. There's always somebody to ruin it for everyone else.

If people could socially distance properly, it would help enormously. But what's been happening at the beaches, and all the articles being posted about people opening their shops up and ignoring social distancing or refusing to wear masks, proves people won't do the right things. So in stead we take more drastic measures.

Yup, I've said this several times in here. Hospitals were beyond the breaking point. Obviously not every hospital, but that doesn't matter. My girlfriend's dad had what he thought was a heart attack last month, and was brought to the hospital. His wife wasn't allowed to go inside - she had to wait outside the hospital. Thankfully, it wasn't a heart attack. But when you're at the point where people with other critical conditions are put in jeopardy because the hospitals are so strained with COVID-19 cases, something desperate has to be done to help.

There's no getting through to some people.

I don't think everyone is doing that. I hope I haven't. I've been on the receiving end of a dogpile in another forum over something the past couple weeks just because they disagree with me, and they were pretty vicious, so I know it's not fun. There are certainly some in here that have been giving you a hard time. I may disagree with some of what is said in here, and with some posters more than others in general, but unless it's completely selfish and self-centered or flat-out incorrect (won't name any names here much as I'd like to) I try to be fair. I don't believe in piling it on people, and none of us really have an answer. It's all just opinions. Even the experts can't agree on what to do. That said, there are things that we should all be doing, and it's a shame that some refuse to do their part.

A couple of things I've read.

1. People can express opposing views. It's when they break the rules that posts get deleted.

2. You can take a mask off and put it back on. Use the ties or elastic when taking it off. Don't touch the mask. Put the mask in a sandwich bag and seal it. When putting it back on, Don't touch the mask part and you're fine.

Some state and medical sites have posted more detailed descriptions on re-using masks. Here's the specific ones that line up with what I said earlier:

Quote:
How to remove a face mask:

1. Clean your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer before touching the mask.
2. Avoid touching the front of the mask. The front of the mask is contaminated. Only touch
the ear loops/ties/band. Follow the instructions below for the type of mask you are using.
o Face Mask with Ear loops: Hold both ear loops and gently lift and remove the
mask.
o Face Mask with Bands: Lift the bottom strap over your head first, then pull the top
strap over your head.
o Face Mask with Ties: Untie the bottom bow first then untie the top bow and pull
the mask away from you as the ties are loosened.
3. Place the mask in designated bag or place in the trash if soiled or damaged.
4. Clean your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer.
Ideally if you have a surplus of masks, they are meant to be disposed of daily, or even after taking it off, but this is more important for a medical setting, rather than a regular person that's not encountering the amount of potential viral load as a healthcare worker. Removing a surgical mask (or N95) doesn't make it automatically contaminated, as long as you take proper precautions when removing, and putting it back on. if the masks become wet, or dirty in any way, then it should probably be replaced.

There are techniques to sterilizing N95 masks and making them as good as new too. One that people could do at home is holding it over a pot of boiling water for like 10 minutes, making sure not to get the mask wet at all or anything (just the steam vapor hitting it). For a surgical mask, this virus can supposedly survive for up to a week on one, so it would be ideal to probably have 7 masks, and do a rotation of them if you're wearing them daily.
