20 million in the US could’ve been infected

https://www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...m_npd_nn_fb_ma

Not surprising. Not everyone is going to go get tested

They only way they survived was by everyone wearing masks and gloves and S-I-P when possible. The Pandemic ran for two years and killed 50 million people worldwide. The country didn't come to a screeching halt. Remember this was over 100 years ago.
Lee, it actually ran three full years.

Quote:
The 1918 flu pandemic (the "Spanish flu") was one of the famous influenza pandemics in history. It was an unusually deadly and severe pandemic that spread across the world. This influenza pandemic was caused by a vicious Influenza A virus strain of subtype H1N1. Most victims were healthy young adults, in contrast to most influenza outbreaks, which predominantly affect juvenile, elderly, or weakened patients. The Spanish flu was implicated in the outbreak of encephalitis lethargica in the 1920s. The pandemic lasted from January 1918 to December 1920, spreading even to the Arctic and remote Pacific islands. Between 20 and 50 million died, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in human history. The Spanish flu (1918 pandemic influenza) H1N1 Hemagglutinin (HA) proteins and antibodies were the main research tools for this influenza pandemic.
Plus nobody knows exactly how many people died, perhaps 100 million (from an estimated 1.8 billion global population @ the time).

Quote:
Global death rate

How do these estimates compare with the size of the world population at the time? How large was the share who died in the pandemic?

Estimates suggest that the world population in 1918 was 1.8 billion.

Based on this, the low estimate of 17.4 million deaths by Spreeuwenberg et al. (2018) implies that the Spanish flu killed almost 1% (0.95%) of the world population.9

If we rely on the estimate of 50 million deaths published by Johnson and Mueller, it implies that the Spanish flu killed 2.7% of the world population. And if it was in fact higher – 100 million as these authors suggest – then the global death rate would have been 5.4%.10

The world population was growing by around 13 million every year in this period which suggests that the period of the Spanish flu was likely the last time in history when the world population was declining.
I know, Wikipedia says from February 1918 to April 1920.
But it was first observed in January 1918.
And it had 4 waves.

COVID-19 is different. We now live in the fast lane (airplanes, subways, buses, ...); we travel much much more and much farther and faster, plus we are much bigger on the number of global population...7.8 billion...6 billion more than in 1918. We have huge gatherings for travelling intercontinental (airports, ports, central stations, subways, ...) and large entertainment gatherings (music concerts, summer beaches, manifestations, speeches, etc.).

These are radical changes to normal daily living. And they happened in a very short period of time. Some will adjust while others won't.
No one ever thought NY would ever get to where we are today. If you ever told anyone back in March that we could get our infection rate to as low as it is today, you would have been the biggest laughing stock! But look where we are today! This virus can be beat! People just need to act smart.

Having said that, I don't take any joy in saying that we should hold off in eating out. You have no idea how much I've been craving KFC for so long. Oh boy, would I like to order some chicken tenders and try their new french fries, but just can't due to the pandemic and the risk involved with eating take out food.

Misery loves company and people need to be miserable along with me and refrain from any sort of take out food for now.

If it makes you feel any better, housemate and I have not had any food made outside the home in over 3.5 months now.

I can't say my debt payoffs was because of the virus, but it was made easier. My main hobby is hitting conventions, meeting famous people there. Costs a ton of money. Well, conventions have been a dead business since the virus broke, and who knows when they will really return at this point. I know in Chicago, they can't have conventions until a vaccine is out.

Basically last October, I did the Chicago Ace con, met a bunch of Marvel actors and dropped a few grand. Then I just started staying home, working both jobs.
Started with NINE credit cards, Student loan and Car Payment. I was doing pretty good paying stuff down, then the virus hit. Both my jobs went into crazy hours.

Today, I am at a car payment and 3 credit cards. By Christmas, at this rate, I should have half a card to pay off.

I was gonna quit my 2nd job at FedEx after Labor Day, but they wanted us all to wear masks....in a building that's over 100 degrees...so I just left. On the 1st day after my 13 year anniversary, just handed in my badge and I currently only have ONE job, first time in 23 years. It feels GREAT!!!!

And I was able to do all this cause of the virus. I am using this time as an opportunity to better myself personally, so if/when things start to go back to normal, it's gonna be a whole new playing field.

Just sharing this story cause it's not all doom and gloom out there. I stay as safe as I can when I go out, but then spend most of my time staying at home, watching movies and fixing the mess of debts I had myself in.

To be honest, this break in 'normal' was probably the best thing for me personally.

I try to look at the bright side- I lost over 10 lbs since I stopped having take out food. Fast food is delicious, but it was making me gain weight.

The scientist experts know how serious it is. Most people (the vast majority...99%) are not expert scientists on virulent viruses and pandemics.
The ones who know best first hand are the front fighters...nurses and doctors.

...And the elderly now gone, a good portion.

Have you all seen those anti-mask protestors at that Palm Beach Commissioners meeting in Florida? Apparently, masks are the work of the devil, yeah, Satan himself. Bunch of quacks imo.
Masks are The devil’s laws lololol.

coincidentally, published a couple hours after this – https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post17785840

one city taking charge - https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/...ublic/2254023/

but, personally, I’d go stiffer with the fine and not incrementally increased based on repeat violations

From Worldometer earlier Brazil was only less than 350 deaths, and USA over 2,000 deaths.
Now Brazil is almost 1,200 deaths and the US just over 500.
Their tracking numbers are poor. Today was exceptionally bad for those two countries, in accuracy.

I sure was surprised earlier with their very wrong numbers.

You can cook better healthy food right @ home.

As for take out food (drive-in), they are open here on the island.
I go once a month on average. But inside they are closed.
The guy @ the cashier desk wears gloves, and they accept cash.
You just wash the change when you get home...washing and drying machine.

Fried chicken sounds great tonight. That's easy to make, with a poutine.
It reminds me of the film...'Green Book'. And it won the top Oscar too...KFC.

What makes me really want to have KFC now more than ever is to try their french fries. I was never crazy about their potato wedges. Not sure how many are aware, but back in the 1990s, KFC used to have french fries and they were DELICIOUS!!! But for some odd reason, they did away with them and replaced them with potato wedges, which I was never crazy about. After decades of waiting and putting up with their horrendous potato wedges, KFC finally turned the tables and ditched the wedges and brought back their fries. I'm so curious to know if they are the same delicious fries they had back in the 1990s. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware of all this change in side dishes until this pandemic started and now it's too late to try it. So I will probably have to wait a long time until it's safe to buy take out food again.
