You didn't know sweat shops were still a thing? Slave labor is alive and well in our world, unfortunately.

^ Masks being manufactured. That's one reason to buy only USA-made masks...
Not all masks are made in those kinds of conditions. Most masks, and other products are made in China, so outside of maybe cotton masks, you probably won't find many US places that are manufacturing surgical masks.

This one from BYD (an automobile manufacturer) are made in a pretty state of the art factory. It's the ones Costco are selling on their site (and in stores), and are likely better quality than some otter no-name ones out there

Yeah, it doesn’t make sense to have them since these can easily be machine manufactured. Unless I’m wrong and face masks are too complex and require them to be man made.

WHO brand new fresh conference; all the latest on the number of infected cases globally, on preventive measures to slow down COVID-19, on VACCINES (reality), ...etcetera, all the latest scientific global health facts ...

It's free to listen to, you don't have to, you can skip it and enjoy the beautiful weather outside this morning. Wear a mask if you go shopping, or in public anywhere, if not for you do it for the planet, the humanity, the rest of the world, your family and friends and neighbors and elders and children and everyone else in the whole world. You might save lives without even knowing it.

Have a great and safe day

How BYD Became the World's Largest PPE Mask Manufacturer - YouTube
True, the majority of masks in the world are made in China.
The ones on the video above (1st picture showing) are not only sold in Costco stores but also in London Drugs stores (Canada). They have various styles...blue material that you wear only once, white ones, and in boxes of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, ... They are very inexpensive, less than $1 per mask (approx. 75 cents each).

And on Amazon you get a gazillion of masks of all colors and styles and prices, from roughly $2 to $20. Material ones, medical ones, reusable ones, fashionable ones, decorative ones, with designs...Disney cartoon characters, Star War characters, Mad Max, Batman and Robin.

We opened the non essential retail here in Scotland today. Virus tentively on it's way to being eliminated in the country. Unfortunately we can't close our border, so might be back to square 1 eventually.

For those hoping for a vaccine:

Dr. Fauci Warns That Anti-Vaxxers Could Stop U.S. From Hitting COVID-19 Herd Immunity

Quote:
Dr. Fauci says he would “settle” for a Covid-19 vaccine that’s 70% to 75% effective. But as many Americans say they won’t get a coronavirus vaccine, Fauci says it is “unlikely” that the US will achieve sufficient levels of immunity against the virus.
Quote:
"I doubt seriously that any vaccine will ever be 100 percent protective," he said. "The best we've ever done is measles which is 97 to 98 percent effective. That would be wonderful if we get there. I don't think we will. I would settle for 70 to 75 percent effective vaccine because that would bring you to that level of what would be herd immunity level."

Asked about polls showing that as many as a third of Americans would refuse a vaccine even if it's free, meaning possibly only 70 to 75 percent of Americans would be willing to get the vaccine once available, Dr. Fauci confirmed the slim chances of herd immunity in that scenario.

"Unlikely," he said. "That's one of the reasons why we have to make sure that we engage the community, as we're doing now. Get community people to help us for people to understand that we are doing everything we can to show that it's safe and that it's effective and it's for the good of them as individuals and as a society to take the vaccine."
Quote:
"There is a general anti-science, anti-authority, anti-vaccine feeling among some people in this country," he said. "An alarmingly large percent of people."

Ah, anti-vaxxers, when you know people are so stupid they should be forced to live with the consequences if they get it and need medical treatment. Just make them all sign "I'm an idiot" paperwork and then refuse treatment of any kind if they get sick from it.

Yup, the only problem with that is they put all the rest of us at risk too. But yeah, if they refuse a vaccine, they should sign a waiver saying they're also refusing treatment if they contract the virus. Sounds harsh, but this anti-science crowd needs to be put under control before they cause some real harm to our society.

Perhaps bring medical insurance into this situation. If you refuse the vaccine, and get the virus and need treatment, insurance won't cover any of the costs - it's on you 100% (unless of course you have a true documented medical reason exempting you from getting the vaccine, like an allergy). The financial penalty might be enough to sway them, since common sense or common decency isn't enough.

There need to be consequences as well to being out in public without masks. Even if you put aside the entire argument about how effective they are, when you run around without one on, it just makes you look like a selfish jerk who doesn't care about anyone but themselves.

Just reading the comments under that vaccine article is saddening. It's astonishing how ignorant so many people are.

Stupid I believe is the correct term and because in this case, stupidity could cost other people their lives, I stand by my above statement.

I don't think they'll put a financial penalty on anti-vaxxers, but one won't be necessary. Just make it a requirement for schools, most jobs, and airline travel and you'll see the vast majority vax up in no time.

As for herd immunity, we may not get to 70% with a vaccine, at least for a while after it's available, but keep in mind that the closer we get there, the further the infection rate goes down, and the closer to normal society can become (being able to ease more restrictions without spikes). 40% would be a lot better than the 8-10% it is now.

You used the word 'eliminated' in reference to Coronavirus.
Slow down yes, eliminated hardly. ...Not until a working vaccine and that the majority accept it. ...Which seems unlikely in our lifetime and geographical positioning and cultural mentality. IMO

If we see a vaccine any time soon then no chance in hell I would get it and I'm not an anti-vaxxer. Both the US and China in particular are hell bent on rushing a vaccine out to get credit for being the first which is just reckless. There is a reason the early estimates for a potential vaccine were years from now and that is because it takes years to properly test and study them to ensure they are safe.

The Texas Medical Center scrubbed data showing ICU beds at full capacity as the state's coronavirus cases spike

Quote:
* The Texas Medical Center removed crucial data from its website on Sunday that showed its ICU beds at full capacity, the Houston Chronicle first reported.

* The move was temporary, a spokesperson said: "After the events of this week, everyone realized the capacity question was complicated and misunderstood. So new slides are being made that better explain."

* Coronavirus cases in Texas are surging, and may soon put ICUs at "unsustainable" capacity.

* Just two states, Connecticut and Rhode Island, are seeing a decline in infections.
Funny thing about Connecticut and Rhode Island being the two states showing a decline - in Rhode Island, masks are required. And people comply. And it seems to be working.

There is a world-wide push to get this vaccine, with many billions being poured into it and every health expert and vaccine company and medical scientist on the planet working on one. This is not normally the case with vaccines. This is helping immensely to accelerate the development where normally this amount of resources are not put into vaccine development.

It is sad, it is reality. The Americas are not ready to accept compromises.
The Americas are not ready for this type of virulent virus...COVID-19.
It's too much, too many things to give up, too much freedom and independence to trade up.

I think many they rather die and let others die too.
Not the majority of us, the minority of them.

What can we do? Be kind, be calm, be safe.

We've had no registered deaths for 4 days. And only 5 new confirmed cases today. It is possible to eliminate the virus from the country given our geographical position, like New Zealand. The problem is we could import cases, that could lead to new clusters of community transmission. And more than likely they will come from people driving up from England, and taking extended vacations in our rural areas.

Mostly the virus has been in our care homes.
