The mask thing is weird. I hope people who want and need to wear a mask feel uncomfortable wearing them because others don't want to. We've already had "Mask Shaming" in public and peer pressure is tough.

All I know is when I go out I'm going out Wild West bandit style.
The "mask thing" isn't "weird". It's now been proven that masks help reduce the spread of the virus, along with social distancing.

If the US general public had started wearing masks more regularly a few months ago, it's very likely we wouldn't have outbreaks to the degree we're seeing now.

Pretty much, those are the extremes most people are using I'm sure. Either you got it and died from it or didn't die.

For the most part recovered just means two weeks passed since a positive test with no follow up or anything.

I wasn't referring to the results of wearing masks, I was commenting if people will feel awkward wearing them (if they're surrounded by people who are not) and how they may feel pressured into not wearing them (we seen videos of mobs surrounding mask wearers) and risk their health and the health of others. I honestly don't know ... if we went towards a large group of 15-20 people and none had masks, some of those people are going to say something, some people are going to risk taking their masks off.

I've always said about masks, if you feel uncomfortable wearing them, how do you think a ventilator feels?

I will simply say most anti-mask people aren't thinking of that.

Thanks for responding, your previous post makes a lot more sense now. I only recently started reading this thread so I didn't know your view on masks.

I would hope mask-wearers would continue to do so regardless of the circumstances, but I'm sure many people, including members of my own family, don't do that.

I'm determined to not get sick, so even if I come across as a crazy person who wears a mask and gloves in social situations, I'm just fine with that.

Exactly and it's worked for NY. People seem to be blinded by the fact that majority of New Yorkers wear masks and that's why our cases are on the decline. People come up with excuses that we went on strict lockdown and that we somehow reached herd immunity. I disagree with the herd immunity as I don't think any state has reached that level yet nor has herd immunity been proven yet with this virus. Also, yeah we did go on lockdown, but despite us reopening, our numbers still continue to go down. That's because businesses require people to wear masks.

Yeah, there are many New Yorkers who still refuse to wear masks, but I'm pretty sure there are far fewer of them here in NY than in other states like Florida.

I really cannot understand how people here can have a "just live with it" attitude and think nothing can be done. Yes, we cannot eliminate this virus completely, but through our actions, we certainly can minimize the spread. Seeing the rate of the spread right now is very alarming and is not something we can just wash our hands and be like, "let's just live with it."

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell revealed on Tuesday the proposed GOP emergency relief bill will include a “targeted, second round” of Paycheck Protection Program loans for small businesses with a “special eye toward hard-hit businesses,” $105 billion for education, and direct stimulus checks to qualifying Americans.

“We want another round of direct payments… to help American families keep driving our national comeback,” McConnell said.

McConnell did not provide any details about who will qualify for the second round of direct payments. Previous reports suggested payments will go to people below a certain income level, likely $75,000, and create a sweeping five-year liability shield against coronavirus lawsuits.

McConnell did not mention the payroll tax cut during his speech on Tuesday. On Monday, Secretary Steven Mnuchin indicated the payroll tax cut was included in the bill.

“We’re all going to be discussing it, as you know [Mnuchin] is coming up for lunch and we are all going to see if we can get on the same page,” McConnell told reporters on Tuesday.

McConnell also said the next recovery package will include strong legal protections for healthcare workers.

White House officials have indicated they hope to keep the relief bill at $1 trillion, but several Democrats have said they are hoping for a $3 trillion plan.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and acting chief of staff Mark Meadows will meet with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday.

Mnuchin vowed passage by month’s end, as a $600 boost in jobless aid is set to expire, and said he expected a fresh $1 trillion jolt of business tax breaks and other aid would have a “big impact” on the struggling economy.

Otherwise this post doesn't make sense.

with all the recent cautiously optimistic vaccine trial data news over the past couple days, there is another breakthrough in terms of prevention -

Thanks. When I posted, I actually read it with a "don't" included, I guess my telekinetic typing skills (or actual reading skills) aren't what they should be.

Sadly, I'm surrounded by idiots.

When Walmart and Menards (hugely giant popular hardware store in my area) announced they were going to require masks, all "those" people said "I'll just take my business to Target and Lowe's then." Now those two require masks. So they're going to shop Amazon only, I guess.

Stupidest comment I seen the other day. "If the disease is real then how come the protesters and homeless people aren't getting it?"

Tony on Virology website (from last week) -

Question from Rich (http://mgm.ufl.edu/faculty/faculty-h...dit-richard-c/ ) – ‘What’s your current perspective on the fraction of transmission that’s either asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic vs. symptomatic’?
Answer -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_Vy6fgaBPE#t=5m45s

P.S.
For those unfamiliar with the TR used as an example in Tony's answer ^…..it’s been known to get around pre-corona pandemic: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...y#post16105908

So he dodged the question entirely. "we don't know"..."if you combine asymptomatic with presymptomatic, it's substantial". Well duh, pretty much everyone knows that.

But the WHO already spilled the beans and said that, when you exclude pre-symptomatic and account for only asymptomatic cases, then they transmit a small fraction of cases (6 percent "at most"). But it's not politically correct for the most visible virus expert to be saying that in public, hence the non-answer.

I don’t believe PC-ness had anything to do with his response. I believe Tony was being completely honest as to the essence of it all. Which is why there was so much push back after the WHO press conference causing them to ‘clarify’ their statement the next day - https://www.statnews.com/2020/06/09/...read-covid-19/

I think the take home message from Tony and other public health experts is that whether pigeon-holed into ‘asymptomatic’ or ‘pre-symptomatic’ categories, the fact of that matter is that people who show little or no symptoms can be responsible for a significant degree of the spread of the virus as opposed to the belief and false sense of security that people who don’t show symptoms were unlikely to spread the virus.

So, moving on…..as to ‘this notion of waning immunity, does that have any impact on your perspective as to how a vaccine might work’…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_Vy6fgaBPE#t=20m36s

I saw that on CNN earlier today. I also know that everyone that come into contact with certain people are tested as well so, clearly, they're able to get those results back quickly enough.

What about the rest of us?
