NMSU using faculty terminations to deal with massive budget cuts, hopefully nobody from my department got fired.

Try telling that to the people that opened pubs here.

Pubs really shouldn't be open I agree. Basically any gathering that involves alcohol consumption as people get bold and careless and start talking louder.

They should be open. It's an essential business!

Weekly update from the governor today at 3, we've definitely flattened the curve so I'd say 50/50 chance she lets restaurants re-open soon at 50% capacity indoors.

testing for SARS-CoV-2 on surfaces –
https://www.nbclosangeles.com/invest...-atms/2412104/

^ I’ll add a caveat. There are cases for wearing gloves if one knows how to use them properly. For example, if you don’t have any hand sanitizer with you and you want to pump fuel into your vehicle, gloves on – pick up gas nozzle, pump gas, place nozzle back, take gloves off properly and toss inside your vehicle (on the floor, etc.) or into an outdoor trash can if available at the station. The key is to avoid cross contamination. Another example would be to use for a single event like pushing buttons at an ATM machine, etc.

At least they're opening indoors. Here in NYC, indoor dining is still closed and likely will remain closed for the rest of the year and all of 2021...

Indoor dining has to come back everywhere, probably by early 2021, it's crippling the American food service industry. In a lot of cases, businesses are closed forever and it will eventually cause lasting damage to the economy.

I've already had that argument with people here and had little to no success.

People don't realize that when these businesses are closed, their rent is not forgiven. Yes, they won't get evicted for not paying, but they still owe that money and need to pay it at some point. When my barber reopened his shop in June, he told me he owed $7,000 of rent for the three months he's been closed!!!

Can you imagine... $7,000?!?!! And that's just for three months! I don't even want to imagine the debt that gyms are facing right now, let alone indoor restaurants!

At least with a gym they're probably only missing out on rent and payroll. Not much maintenance or replacing equipment that doesn't get used.

The New Mexico Senate is looking into limiting the powers of our governor because they think she's over-stepping. I agree, I hope they get some of her emergency powers revoked and limited.

So how many of these reports of people getting re-infected will you automatically reply to with 'who knows what happened'??

So we meet all of the re-opening criteria except one and we're doing extremely well even in that area. They still don't want to re-open because reasons. Yup I can see the governor getting overruled soon, she's just being silly now.

I am volunteering in a COVID-19 vaccine trial, and I received the first of two injections this morning.

This is the Phase 2/3 trial for the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine, where I, along with roughly 30,000 others, will receive two injections three weeks apart, and then check in at the medical research center four or five more times after that. This is an observer-blind study, meaning that neither I nor the immediate study doctor knows whether I received the actual vaccine or a control placebo (a saline shot).

I am 48 years old and unmarried with no children, so I would rather put myself through this than have someone’s father or mother go through it. I am confident that this is a safe undertaking, though. At any rate, the fact that I am social distancing does not mean that I cannot have an adventure or two this summer.

A nurse gave me a brief physical. They then took my blood samples and gave me a nasal swab test for COVID-19. About a half hour later, they gave me the vaccine shot (or saline control shot).

My guess is that I'm one of the control subjects, because I didn't even feel any soreness at the site of injection. Who knows, though?

I have an app on my phone now where I fill out a "diary" entry every evening for seven days, documenting my temperature, my redness area at the site of injection (none right now), and any symptoms.

I also have a card with phone numbers that i'm to keep with me at all times, just in case I have an unrelated medical emergency and need to inform the doctors.

I also received a Visa card with a $150 balance for this visit. Woo hoo!

I am grateful to have the chance to help in a small way so that we can all return to the lives that we want to be living sooner rather than later. Science will get us through.

Thanks for volunteering and keep us posted with any news! Hopefully you got the real deal and that's it's safe and effective.

So are you to go on as normal (ie, not exposing yourself any more than before)? Georgia seems pretty lax on masks, don't know if you wear one all the time or only when required.

I'm to go on as normal, since, after all, I might have just received the control placebo.

I wear a mask whenever I'm indoors anywhere besides my own townhouse. No exceptions. I also carry a mask in my pocket when I'm running outdoors, just in case I encounter random friends on the route and want to stop and talk from the six-feet-plus distance.

Georgia, as a whole, is doing nothing on an administrative or legislative level to stop the spread of this disease, and our death counts are reflecting that now. It's pretty sad. I'm being fully cognizant, though, by following strict mask rules and by social distancing across the board.

The purpose of the vaccine trial right now is simply to monitor the antibody buildup in healthy individuals over time.
