Default Noir enthusiasts....your recommendations?

Been itching to check out some older noir flicks from the golden age of Hollywood, but I don't know much about the genre. Throw some names out and I'll watch them.

Can't go wrong with Double Indemnity. I highly recommend that one. In fact, I'd make that my first stop on the noir express. Many (most?) consider it to be the best of the noirs.

Also The Postman Always Rings Twice and Out of the Past. Don't know if these two are technically noirs, but White Heat and Touch of Evil are both excellent black and white crime thrillers. Alas, none of them on Blu.

I agree with TOUCH OF EVIL, one of my favourites.

And also, I recommend LAURA (1944, by Otto Preminger), but sadly, it's not in Blu yet.

The Big Sleep, with Bogie & Bacall--
Don't expect to understand the ending on the first go, but with noir, by the time you're that far in, it doesn't matter.

(And a darker film than The Maltese Falcon, obviously, but thought it might help to include that just in case.)

Key Largo
The Killing
Kiss of Death
The Lodger
The Maltese Falcon

Scarlet Street
The Set-Up
Shadow of a Doubt

Crime Wave
Detour
D.O.A.
This Gun for Hire
He Walked by Night
In a Lonely Place
Kansas City Confidential

Is there such a thing as a "trippy-noir" movie? :

Double Indemnity
Strangers on a Train

Not Golden Age but great,
Chinatown
L.A. Confidential
Blade Runner (already said, I think as a joke, but it is such a great Sci-fi Noir movie)

And make sure when you check some of these titles out that you view the originals not the remakes as I know there have been poor remakes of D.O.A. and The Postman Always Rings Twice. And probably a few more on these great lists.

For modern(ish) day film noir, I highly recommend 'Romeo is Bleeding'. And how about some (or all) of David Lynch?

J.J. Hunsecker's list above is awesome! Watch all those and you will be an expert. Another that is not considered to be great, but which I found interesting is "The Blue Dahlia".

Oh - and if you like French films in addition to Rififfi you could try "Touchez pas au Grisbi" and "Bob le Flambeur".

Have fun.
