Can't go wrong with Double Indemnity. I highly recommend that one. In fact, I'd make that my first stop on the noir express. Many (most?) consider it to be the best of the noirs.
Also The Postman Always Rings Twice and Out of the Past. Don't know if these two are technically noirs, but White Heat and Touch of Evil are both excellent black and white crime thrillers. Alas, none of them on Blu. |

The Big Sleep, with Bogie & Bacall--
Don't expect to understand the ending on the first go, but with noir, by the time you're that far in, it doesn't matter. (And a darker film than The Maltese Falcon, obviously, but thought it might help to include that just in case.) |

I love noir films!
I consider the following the best from the golden age: Asphalt Jungle Bad Day at Black Rock The Big Sleep Criss Cross Double Indemnity Gun Crazy (AKA Deadly is the Female) Key Largo The Killing Kiss of Death The Lodger The Maltese Falcon Night and the City Nightmare Alley Notorious Out of the Past Rebecca Rififi Scarlet Street The Set-Up Shadow of a Doubt Sorry, Wrong Number Sunset Blvd. Strangers on a Train Sweet Smell of Success The Third Man Touch of Evil Vertigo White Heat Others that are also good include: The Big Clock The Big Combo The Big Heat Body and Soul Brute Force Crime Wave Detour D.O.A. This Gun for Hire He Walked by Night In a Lonely Place Kansas City Confidential The Killers Kiss Me Deadly The Lady from Shanghai Laura (I feel this one is overrated, but it's still good) Mildred Pierce The Naked City Niagara The Night of the Hunter Panic in the Streets The Postman Always Rings Twice They Live by Night |

And make sure when you check some of these titles out that you view the originals not the remakes as I know there have been poor remakes of D.O.A. and The Postman Always Rings Twice. And probably a few more on these great lists.

For modern(ish) day film noir, I highly recommend 'Romeo is Bleeding'. And how about some (or all) of David Lynch?

J.J. Hunsecker's list above is awesome! Watch all those and you will be an expert. Another that is not considered to be great, but which I found interesting is "The Blue Dahlia".
Oh - and if you like French films in addition to Rififfi you could try "Touchez pas au Grisbi" and "Bob le Flambeur". Have fun. Last edited by blu-bry; 06-01-2010 at 06:31 PM. |
