Depending on whether you consider it noir or not there's The Leopard Man.

As I said; it probably had more to do with a first impression at an early age than anything else. There are plenty of serious dramas with him that I do like such as Trial, Ransom, etc.

and as for Ray's question: I would recommend Ride the Pink Horse. I was very pleasantly surprised when Criterion announced it. I had seen it several years earlier on TCM and loved it. It was gritty, unglamorous, and had a great supporting cast with Fred Clark, Art Smith, and Thomas Gomez.

I think it is ok. it is not my favorite noir, hell its not in my top 20. I do like Robert Montgomery though. I liked him more in Lady In The Lake but I'm in the minority there.

I was out at the Noble today taking a little stroll down Criterion Avenue and started reading the back of The Killers.

I've seen the 1946 version and thought it was good, but not necessarily great. But then I noticed that the Lee Marvin/John Cassavetes version is also included in the package. That sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

I haven't seen the 1964 version.

Is it any good?

...how does it compare to the original?

Apples and oranges. The 1946 version is stylish; the 1964 is gritty. They're both great, but I think I prefer the 1964 version. Definitely worth a watch.

That scene alone is worth the price of admission.

Has there been any rumors on which titles Kino might include if they do another boxset? I'm hesitant to pickup Pitfall and The Crooked Way if they will be in a boxset later.

I wanted to pose the same question. I have a feeling they might choose to leave out Pitfall from the set and include the John Payne noirs instead (The Crooked Way, Hidden Fear, 99 River Street), with the addition of The Captive City and Shield for Murder. Just an assumption of mine, though. I would be more than happy should they decide to include Pitfall together with the John Payne titles, since I haven't pulled the trigger on any of those yet and I'm not really attracted either by The Captive City nor Shield for Murder...

MisterLime, Kino's rep on this site, posted that it might be a few months before any decision is made on whether to release a second box set. They wanted to gauge interest based on sales of the first set.

I think if a second volume materializes they will likely leave PITFALL out because it has more inherent recognition and reputation than the other possibile titles and is probably selling well enough on its own. So I'm agreeing with your assumption. Picking up PITFALL now at the reduced Amazon price is likely a safe bet. I did.

Some potentially great news. The noir Sudden Fear (1952), starring Joan Crawford, and Jack Palance, will be screening at The Film Forum in NYC in August, from a new Restoration. It's being distributed courtesy of Cohen Media. A BD release is very likely to follow afterwards

Picked up The Killers today.

Wanted to limit myself to three Criterions to maximize my coupon, so only room for one noir.

It was either this or Gilda.

Felt like the two-for-one deal with the remake was the most appealing option.

...plus I like the spine.

...and Ava Gardner.

It's great to see that this is finally out in the wild. It seems like forever since Cohen's initial restoration announcement.

For anyone unaware, Soderbergh's remake of Criss Cross, "The Underneath", is included as a supplement on the Criterion release of King Of The Hill.

Also, I watched it today and thought it was excellent. Easily one of the better remakes of a classic noir.

SS himself disagrees with me though lol

Great news. Here's the cover art and info from BFI:

Quote:
Considered by many to be the last of the true 40s and 50s film noirs, Odds Against Tomorrow is the story of a daring robbery gone wrong. When ruthless killer Eric Slater (Robert Ryan) teams up with crooked ex-cop Dave Burke (Ed Begley), and gambler Johnny Ingram (Harry Belafonte) to rob a New York bank, things quickly start to wrong. Fuelled by his racist hatred, Eric continually clashes with Johnny resulting in the heist quickly spiralling out of control. With the escalating tension comes increasing violence as Slater’s prejudice drives both him and Ingram to the very edge. With its dark jazz score and brooding atmosphere Odds Against Tomorrow represents one of the most important films about race and racism, and was directed by 4 time Oscar winner Robert Wise (The Sound of Music, West Side Story).

I've forgotten that there is a Japanese release of Nicolas Ray's They Live By Night (1948). Like all their previous RKO releases, the transfer is not good, poor black levels. Let's hope Warner Archive decides to release this soon:
