Speaking of Edmund O'Brien and "Shield for Murder", one of my favorite noirs starring O'Brien is "711 Ocean Drive" (1950). It's not available on Blu-ray but I have the DVD.
The following is from the back of the DVD: O'Brien stars in this top-flight noir based on actual events. He plays a former telephone repairman who uses his knowledge to help his bookie expand his business to increased profits and rises to the top. But when syndicate head Otto Kruger wants to take over, things start to get dicey ---- and O'Brien's in too deep to call the cops. With gritty photography by Frank F. Planer, direction by Joseph M. Newman (This Island Earth), and a white-knuckle climax atop Boulder Dam, this is one of the finest crime thrillers of its era. The excellent cast also includes Joanne Dru (Red River) and such veteran tough guys as Barry Kelly, Donald Porter, Howard St. John and Robert Osterloh, plus a brief appearance by Cleo Moore. |

I asked this sometime back but it got lost in the shuffle. What is the best release of The Stranger? Not a GREAT movie but I dig the cat-and-mouse between Robinson and Welles. The only copy I have is a poverty public domain DVD.
Tried reading about the differences between all the releases and it made my head spin. Any input here? |

Ahhh. I should have specified Kino for the win as far as Region A goes, because that's my limitation.

I've been looking to pick up a copy myself, but at the very end of the Beaver review he "notes that many fans greatly prefer the MGM DVD" which is OOP. More to think about. ![]() Last edited by Reddington; 05-10-2017 at 12:48 AM. Reason: Spelling |

I never would have noticed that about the quote. I don't mind the ratings logos too much, so I'll probably have to pick which side I use based on which quote I prefer.

Oh... My schedule has been so weird over the past couple of days that I forgot to post that I watched my Indicator Blu-ray of The Lady from Shanghai.
As far as I'm concerned, the Indicator Blu-ray is the definitive release of The Lady from Shanghai. The picture quality is stunning, the extras are spot-on (even the ones that were ported over), and the whole package is flawless. Rita Hayworth is just gorgeous in this movie, and the camera adores her. I'm well aware of the fact that, before she emerged in the movie business, Hayworth looked nothing like she does onscreen, and that she had to deal with some rather horrid makeover hours over a stretch of years, but the illusion here is wondrous. This is Rita Hayworth at her lovely best. The "House of Mirrors" shootout at the end is one of my favorite moments in cinema. The Lady from Shanghai is far from a perfect movie, and the pacing hits a speedbump by way of a court hearing sequence, but it is still one of my favorite films noir, all things considered, and it has my highest recommendation. |

Arrow have officially announced The Big Knife (1955). I brought this up a couple weeks ago, and most at the time seemed to claim it wasn't really a noir, but more of a melodrama. What's the verdict? Most sources seem to list it as one.
