Stories that center on amnesia always strain credulity to some extent, but Hangover Square is tremendously well made.

The Kino re-release of D.O.A. (1988) is coming October 30th. Unlike the Mill Creek reelease, this comes with a pair of commentary tracks, and a 5.1 audio track.

Time is running out for Dexter Cornell (Dennis Quaid, The Big Easy, Far from Heaven). He has just 24 hours to find out who poisoned him... and why. In his bizarre and deadly search, everyone has a secret. Everyone is a suspect. Even the woman (Meg Ryan, Sleepless in Seattle) who loves him. Directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, creators of superstar "Max Headroom," D.O.A. pulsates with explosive action and sizzling performances by Quaid and Ryan, two people who find themselves suddenly living on the edge. It's a night on the run, filled with fear, danger... and passion. The stellar cast features Charlotte Rampling (Farewell, My Lovely), Daniel Stern (Celtic Pride), Jane Kaczmarek (TV’s Malcolm in the Middle), Robin Johnson (Times Square), Brion James (Blade Runner), John Hawkes (Winter’s Bone), Robert Knepper (TV’s Twin Peaks), Jack Kehoe (Serpico) and Elizabeth Arlen (The First Power).

It's also sourced from a new master, so it should look better too.

Esteemed noir aficionados, I can order two of the following five without fear of spousal retribution-- which would you choose? Or, if you like, what order would you place them in?

Cry of the City
Highway Dragnet
Kansas City Confidential
I Walk Alone
The Hitch-Hiker

Thanks!.....

No wrong choices but I'd say Cry of the City and Kansas City Confidential. Kansas City is more esteemed I think but Cry of the City was a bit of a pleasant surprise for me, I really loved it

I agree that you should pick up KCC (make sure you pick up the Film Detective release) and Cry of the City. I enjoy Ida Lupino's work but find The Hitch-Hiker overrated.

The female spouse might respond best to Highway Dragnet and The Hitch-Hiker because they're female-lead stories.

The Hitch-Hiker is an excellent movie. It's simple, but filled with dread and suspense. It mostly takes place during the day in the desert, which makes it a bit different from most traditional noirs. It's also a breezy watch, at under 80 minutes. It's directed by a woman (a big rarity for that era), but it's definitely not a "female-lead" story, since not a single female character appears in the film outside a couple extras with no dialogue. It's in the public domain, which means you could probably sample it on YouTube before committing to purchasing it on Blu-ray.

I'm sure you're right; I may be confusing it with another of Ida's films.

I find all of John Brahm's films in the 1940s and 1950s tremendously well-made. He was a peerless craftsman who really understood the importance of mood and atmosphere. His pictorial sensibility never ceases to impress me -- deep focus, moving background action into foreground interaction and so on. Watch The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima (1952) sometime; it's only on DVD. It has all the same virtues as Hangover Square and The Lodger.

The Locket is really underrated IMHO.

The closer I can position something to a chick flick, the better off I tend to be.

There's absolutely nothing about The Hitch-Hiker though that qualifies it as a "chick flick"; if anything, she'll probably like that movie the least on the list because of how male-oriented it is.

I love The Hitch-Hiker but I'm going to throw my hat in with others, Cry of the City and Kansas City Confidential are probably the winners.

Kansas City Condidential is the best film from the list and it’s NOT close. Probably Cry of the City for the second choice.

Not that particular release, but the movie is on the list for its inclusion in the Otto Preminger Noir box set in the UK.

Twilight Time was supposedly going to release the title a couple years back, not sure what happened.

I would also go with Kansas City Confidential (and as previously pointed out, the Film Detective version), and Cry of the City. For me, I Walk Alone would be next, The Hitch-Hiker (also good) is primarily noted for Ida Lupino being the Director, Highway Dragnet... didn't care for so much.

If getting close to a chick-flick is important, you may try a couple of others that you did not list - They Live By Night & Side Street. Both star Farley Granger, and Cathy O'Donnell who made for a popular pairing.
