I finally watched Niagara for the first time the other day. It's an enjoyable noir, but I wish the story was as juicy as it seemed to think it was. It's mostly worth watching for Marilyn Monroe playing such a villainous character (though it's a shame she
[Show spoiler]was killed off 3/4 into the film
). She was a really underrated actress, and it's a shame she never got to work with Hitchcock like she wanted. The technicolor photography and Niagara Falls scenery were both absolutely breathtaking. Makes me wish we could finally see Leave Her to Heaven reissued on Blu-ray. Fox's release for Niagara is technically very good, but it lacks bonus features, which is really unfortunate.

Niagara is one of the best looking Blu-rays in my entire collection as far as picture quality goes.

Terrific review, Geoff. You touched on every single point I would have and certainly in a more cogent, concise manner than I would have. Hope to see more reviews from you.

It’s definitely one of Fox’s better, pre-CinemaScope, Technicolor remasters.

I thought the other actress was also extremely hot. I wonder why she didn't have more of a career.

Jean Peters is terrific in another classic noir, Samuel Fuller's Pickup on South Street (currently available on Criterion DVD). She also stars in Vicki (currently available on Fox Film Noir Series DVD) and in A Blueprint for Murder (currently available on Fox DVD).

If you like westerns, then she can be seen on the Broken Lance Blu-ray.

She's in Three Coins in the Fountain as well, which is a Twilight Time Blu-ray title.

Oh, and she's in Elia Kazan's Viva Zapata!

She had one hell of a figure. Looks like she might have been an athlete, especially in the final water scenes.

Well put, pretty much sums up how I felt about it. Marilyn was great and I wish they'd spent more time exploiting her character's motivations, but it's still a fine example of the era's few color noirs though. Not as good as Leave Her to Heaven, of course.

And I'd never cared much about Marilyn but in the last few years have come to appreciate her acting abilities and simply her screen presence after seeing Niagara, Asphalt Jungle, and Bus Stop.

Oh yes, I bought the set this was in with the other John Alton noirs and the restorations are phenomenal.

I just finished watching Raw Deal - the cinematography is magnificent. Kudos to ClassicFlix for doing such a great job with them.

I looked at both Dollar Tree and Big Lots for this, to no avail...so I spent $10 on Amazon.

Glad I did though, because revisiting it was like watching it for the first time. So cool seeing Widmark and Palance in such an atypical noir from Kazan...loved the New Orleans setting/locations and the faceless, intangible villain in the form of pneumonic plague. Reportedly
[Show spoiler]Palance, in his film debut, actually cracked Widmark in the head with a gun in the film's climactic pursuit.

If you got it for $1, it's the film noir steal of the century.

It sure is. Widmark and Palance are fantastic and I love the on-location scenery of New Orleans.

I watched Night of the Hunter last night on The Criterion Channel before it expires at the end of the month.

Man, what a wild movie...

Would it be considered noir? (I realize it can't be pigeonholed into any one classification.)

1) Now I can't find it mentioned, but wasn't there a commentary on the Criterion DVD? I remember the commenter mentioning that Peters was "so...ripe" in this film. Although it was not an acceptable thing to say, it was certainly correct. She was gorgeous.
Edit: I found the quote in the Criterion DVD. It's in an essay by Luc Sante: "The love interest is supplied by Jean Peters, who is awe-inspiringly ripe - you imagine wardrobe having to gaffer-tape her dress every morning, to keep her from bursting out of it." I haven't looked at this DVD set for a while. What a beautiful package!
2) When will Criterion give us a blu-ray of this film?

I was shocked to find it as I've never seen any movies at my DT, I was just going in to get some candy! It was right up front with some other movies and books. There were only 5 Blu-rays and 3 of them were Panic in the Streets, people just don't know what they're passing up

It is sort of considered a Noir movie and a still from the movie is on the cover of a Noir book I have.
