The Indicator Columbia Noir set looks really nice with all the extras. I have the Five Tall Tales set from them and it is my favorite box set from them. The only thing I don't like is being charged up front for a November release but I don't want to wait too long and chance it getting sold out.

You can never say never but to date no Indicator release has sold out on pre-order or in the first month of release.

Mifunefan, you can add this to the box set/collection list, now that it has a database listing.

(I'm SO getting it. I've been meaning to get all 4 already, so I see this as an absolute win.)

Sort of a random question, but for everyone here: what would you say are some noir examples of great on-location shooting?

I started replaying L.A. Noire for the first time since it came out in 2011 and am in the mood for some vintage Los Angeles, New York, etc. For example, I watched Kiss Me Deadly last night which had some pretty cool LA locations.

I think The Naked City's credentials as a noir are dubious but nobody can argue that New York isn't a big part of the movie.

I'd recommend "Criss Cross" with Burt Lancaster, Yvonne De Carlo and Dan Duryea. An absolutely terrific noir, made even better by its skillful use of fascinating late 40's Los Angeles locations.

Of course WAC announces that set after I already own two of the films.

The Postman Always Rings Twice was shot on location at Laguna Beach and other locations in Southern California. I think all exteriors were on location, which was a rarity at the time.

I have a modest collection of noir and haven't watched anything in a while, but from memory, Dark Passage has some great location work in and around San Francisco.

LA locations are my favorite in film noir. Postman and Criss Cross are great examples as mentioned. Some others that come to mind:

Sunset Blvd.
Double Indemnity
Mildred Pierce
Big Sleep, The
Murder, My Sweet
This Gun For Hire
Murder by Contract
Crime Wave
Angel Face
Cry Danger
The Prowler
Pitfall
Blue Dahlia, The

Dark Passage, Woman on the Run, and Vertigo for vintage SF.

The Window (DVD) was filmed in NYC. The rundown and abandoned tenements are an integral part of the story. Sad too that they would figure in star Bobby Driscoll’s final days in real life.

Funny, I never automatically think noir when it comes to Vertigo. I have a copy of the Arrow release of Woman on the Run. In my unwatched pile...

I generally never think noir when it comes to colour movies (except in case of neo noir). And frankly, I also never think of noir when it comes to Hitchcock - he has such a distinctive style that I cannot consider any of his movies as noir.

I don’t really consider Vertigo to be noir, but that probably wouldn’t be the case if it was B&W, made a decade earlier, and was directed by Fritz Lang with Edward G. Robinson and Joan Bennett, but otherwise unchanged.

I don’t think genuine noir has to necessarily be B&W though. Leave Her to Heaven is one of my favorite noirs, and that was technicolor.

But of course, if it would have been made a decade earlier, in B&W, directed by Fritz Lang and starring Edward G. Robinson and Joan Bennett, it wouldn’t have been Vertigo

I know Leave Her to Heaven is generally considered a noir, but to me, it doesn’t evoke that typical atmosphere which makes a movie “noir”. The same goes for Niagara, another technicolour picture which is generally considered noir.

Just got done watching Arrow's recently released Black Test Car (1962). I highly recommend noir fans checking this one out. This is a gorgeous black and white film drenched in shadow.

Two competing car companies tangle themselves in a plot of corporate espionage. Betrayal, blackmail, adultery, red herrings, prostitution. The more you watch the worse it gets. Great stuff.

Here's some screenshots highlighting some of the darker, shadowy moments in the film:
